A soldier came home after having fought in Vietnam (越南). He called his parents from San Francisco.
“Mom and Dad, I’m coming home, but I have a friend with me.”
“Sure,” they replied, “We’d love to meet him.”
“There’s something you should know,” the son continued, “he was hurt badly in the fighting. He lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to live with us.”
“I’m sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live.”
“No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us.”
“Son,” said the father. “You don’t know what you’re asking. The young man’s handicap (残疾) will create such a terrible burden that we can’t afford. We have our own lives to live, and we can’t let something like this become a part of our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on his own.”
At that point, the son hung up the phone. A few days later, the parents received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building. The police believed it was suicide (自杀).
The sad parents flew to San Francisco to see the body of their son.
They recognized (认出) him, but to their surprise, they also discovered something they didn’t know before: their son had only one arm and one leg.

I hope you're well.I'm on holiday in London with my friend Jenny. We arrived by plane on Monday and took a taxi to our hotel.I went for a walk in Hyde Park but Jenny didn't come with me because she was tired.
Then on Tuesday we saw the clock, Big Ben, and Buckingham Palace.Queen Elizabeth lives in the Palace, but we didn't see her!I bought some presents but Jenny didn't buy anything!
The next day we visited the British Museum and had dinner in a Chinese restaurant!
On Thursday morning we relaxed. Then we went to Tower Bridge on the River Thames and looked at the city. It's very big!
Finally today I did some shopping and Jenny listened to a concert in the park.I came back to the hotel and read the newspaper. Then I wrote some postcards and sent some emails.I took lots of photos and I'm sending them with this email to you!

I've been happy here in New York. But when holidays are coming near, I really feel “There's no place like home,” just like the English proverb says, “East, west, home is the best.
You must be doing well in English class. The letter you sent to me was written in good English.
Well, I want to bring my friend Diana to our home. I dare not tell Mama directly. If Dad and Mum say that will be all right, please write to me as soon as possible.
Diana is a poor girl whose parents died last month in a terrible accident. She has to spend the holidays alone. She wants to see China and try everything that we Chinese do. She has learned Chinese for two years and can speak a little. She has great curiosity about our family life and will ask you many questions about it. Isn't it a good chance to understand each other? Dear Malia and Sasha,
I know that you’ve both had a lot of fun these two years. You have been to many picnics and had all kinds of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn’t have let you eat. But I also know that it hasn’t always been easy for you and Mom. So now I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me—about how I'd make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with those smiles and suddenly, all my big plans didn’t seem so important any more. I soon found that the greatest happiness in my life was that you were so happy. And I realized that my own life wouldn't mean much if I couldn’t make you two happy. In the end, girls, I ran for(竞选)President: Because of what I want for you and for every child in the US.
I want all our children to go to school so that they can learn and grow. I want them to have the chance to go to college—even though their parents don’t have enough money. And I want them to get good jobs.
I want us to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our earth cleaner and safer. And I want us to see no difference of different colors and areas because we are all equal.
I hope both of you will start to give others the chances you’ve had. You know, this country has given our family so much, so you have to, and really should, give something back. When you are doing something larger than yourself, you will realize how helpful you are.
These are the things I want for you—to grow up in a world in which you can make your dreams come true. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and get what you girls have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure.
I am so proud of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am thankful every day because you behave so well when we get ready to start our new life together in the White House.
Love,
Dad
