阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

[1]My daughter did an experiment for me two summers ago.She applied to job openings she’d found on a couple of big online job boards. She mailed the applications and waited. And waited. After sending out 100 resumes(履历表), specially addressed to each organization’s human resources(HR) manager, fewer than five HR departments took the time to reply, or acknowledged receipt.

  [2]What happened?

[3]Maybe in the thirty seconds or so of attention that her resume received, each HR person made a snap decision. It seemed that 95 of them were unimpressioned.

[4]Or, maybe, out of the 300 other resumes HR had received that morning, they had already scheduled a requisite(必要的) number of interviews.Or, maybe HR simply forwarded her resume to the hiring manager who was supposed to call her for an interview.

[5]Or, maybe they thought her resume was fairly generic(一般的) and they didn’t have time to figure out if she might be a good fit, with the necessary skills, attitudes, and the desire to do the job.

[6]Most likely, the real reason why she didn’t get an interview was the last one.HR didn’t have time to figure out how she would work in their company.

[7]This happens all the time.I think most job seekers make the serious mistake of thinking that all they need to do is tell the HR department what they did in the past.

[8]That might be OK for some hiring managers, but most want to know the answer to one question:How can this applicant help us right now?If your resume does not answer that question, or sufficiently tell a story about how you may be able to help, you won’t have a shot at the job in this market.

[9]Before you can answer that question, however, you need to do some research on the company.Find out everything you can about the company, including the departments, the people, the products, markets, and the plans for the future.

[10]Information is power, and it is available quite easily.Don’t expect HR to figure out how you might fit into their organization. You ________ instead. This is the surest way to get the interview.

It was an early September day, cool and bright and just right for running, and I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race over a course with a few high hills.Still, I felt energetic; despite the hills it was going to be a fine run.

Just ahead of me was Peggy Mimno, a teacher from Mount Kiseo, New York. She was also running easily, moving along at my speed. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where I was; Why pay attention to pace when she was setting such a nice one? I'd overtake(追上)her later on when she was tired.

So I ran behind her.The course headed north for miles, wandered west for a hilly mile, then turned south again along a winding road. The race was getting harder. We had four miles left and already it was beginning to be real work.

Peggy overtook a young runner. She seemed to know him, for they exchanged a few cheerful words as she passed him.Their exchange worried me.You don't chat during a race unless you are feeling good, and Peggy simply was.

Still, I was close enough to overtake her if she was tired, so I didn't give up hope completely. We were getting nearer to a long, punishing hill now and it would be the test.We were a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost determine who crossed it first.

As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Peggy was moving away-first five yards, then ten, then more. Finally it was clear that there was no hope of catching her.She beat me soundly.

There is an important lesson in that race.Women are thought to be weaker, slower and not nearly as skilled in sports.Yet as Peggy Mimno so clearly showed, the similarities between men and women runners are more important than differeces.I have run with a number of women, and I can say it is often hard work.

A.

Peggy overtook the young runner.

B.

Peggy was running energetically.

C.

Peggy was laughing at the writer.

D.

Peggy paid no attention to the writer.

(3)

By saying“a long, punishing hill”(paragraph 5), the writer implies that ________.

[ ]

A.

Peggy would fail to reach the hilltop

B.

men are more skilled at climbing hills

C.

overtaking Peggy would be easy

D.

climbing the hill would be a demanding task

(4)

What lesson does the writer learn from the race?

[ ]

A.

Women are as good as men in sports.

B.

Women are better at climbing hills.

C.

He should have more training in a cross-country race.

D.

He should set a quicker pace at the beginning of a race.

It happened in one of those colorful Danish inns which offer service specially for tourists and where English is spoken.I was with my father on a business-and-pleasure trip, and in our free hours we were having a wonderful time.

“I wish Mother were here.” I said.

“If your mother had come with us,” said Father, “it would have been wonderful to show her around.”

He had visited Denmark when he was a young man, I asked him, “How long is it since you were here?”

“Oh, about thirty years.I remember being in this very inn, by the way.” He looked around, remembering.“Those were pleasant and enjoyable days…” He stopped wuddenly, and I saw that his face was pale.I followed his eyes and looked across the room to a woman who was setting drinks before some customers. She might have been pretty once, but now she was fat and her hair was untidy.“Do you know her” I asked.

  “I did once,” he said.

The woman came to our table.“Drinks?” she asked.

“We'll have beer,” I said. She nodded and went away.

“I couldn't believe it! How she has changed! Thank heaven she didn't recognize me,” Father said in a low voice, cleaning his face with a handkerchief.“I knew her before I met your mother, ”he went on.“I was a student, on a tour. She was a lovely young girl, very graceful.I fell madly in love with her, and she with me.”

“Does Mother know about her?” I said suddenly, without thinking.

“Of course,” Father said gently. He looked at me a little anxiously.I felt embarrassed(尴尬)for him.

  I said, “Dad, you don't have to…”

“Your mother would tell you if she were here.I don't want you wondering about this.I was a foreigner to her family.I depended on my father. If she had married me, she wouldn't have had any bright future. So her father was against our romance. When I wrote to my father that I wanted to get married he stopped posting money to me.And I had to go home. But I met the girl once more, and told her I would return to America, borrow enough money to get married on, and come back for her in a few months.”

“We knew, ”he continued, “that her father might stop and take away our letter, so we agreed that I would simply mail her a slip of paper with a date on it, the time she was to meet me at a certain place; then we'd get married.Well, I went home, got the money and sent her the date. She received the note. She wrote me:‘I'll be there.’ But she wasn't.Then I found that she had been married about two weeks before, to a local innkeeper. She hadn't waited.”

Then my father said, “Thank God she didn't.I went home, met your mother, and we’ve been completely happy. We often joke about youthful love romance.I suggest that one day you write a story about it.”

The woman appeared with our beer.

“You are from America?” she asked me.

  “Yes,” I said.

She smiled happily, “A wonderful country, America.”

“Yes, a lot of your countrymen have gone there.Did you ever think of it?”

“Not me.Not now, ”she said.“I thought so one time, a long time ago.But I stayed here. It's much better here.”

We drank our beer and left.Outside I said, “Father, just how did you write that date on which she was to meet you?”

He stopped, took out an envelope and wrote on it.“Like this, ”he said.“12/11/13, which was, of course, December11th, 1913.”

“No!”I said loudly.“It isn't in Denmark or any European country.Over here they write the day first, then the month. So that date wouldn't be December11th but the 12th of November!”

Father passed his hand over his face.“So she was there!” he signed,“and it was because I didn't show up that she got married.” He was silent a while.“Well,” he said, “I hope she's happy. She seems to be.”

As we continued walking I said, “It's a lucky thing it happened that way.You wouldn't have met Mother.”

He put his arm around my shoulders, looked at me with a heartwarming smile, and said,“I was doubly lucky, young man, for otherwise I wouldn't have met you, either!”

There's an energy crisis in America, and it has nothing to do with fossil fuels.Millions of us get up each morning already weary over the day holds.“I just can't get started.” People say.But it's not physical energy that most of us lack.Sure, we could all use extra sleep and a better diet. But in truth, people are healthier today than at any time in history.I can almost guarantee that if you long for more energy, the problem is not with your body.

What you're seeking is not physical energy. It's emotional energy.Yet, sad to say life sometimes seems designed to exhaust our supply. We work too hard.We have family obligations(义务).We encounter(遭遇)emergencies and personal crises. No wonder so many of us suffer from emotional fatigue(疲劳), a kind of utter exhaustion of the spirit.

And yet we all know people who are filled with joy, despite the unpleasant circumstances of their lives.Even as a child I observed people who were poor or disabled or ill, but who nevertheless faced life with optimism and vigor(活力).Consider Laura Hillenbrand, who despite

an extremely weak body wrote the best-seller Seabiscuit.Hillenbrand barely had enough physical energy to drag herself out of bed to write. But she was fueled by having a story she wanted to share. It was emotional energy that helped her succeed.Unlike physical energy, which is finite(有限的)and diminishes(减少)with age, emotional energy is unlimited and has nothing to do with genes or upbringing. So how do you get it? You can't simply tell yourself to be positive. You must take action. Here are six practical strategies that work.

  1.Do something new.

Very little that's new occurs in our lives. The impact of this sameness on our emotional energy is gradual, but huge:It's like a tire(轮胎)with a slow leak(漏).You don't notice it at first, but eventually you'll get a flat. It's up to you to plug the leak-even though there are always a dozen reasons to stay stuck in your dull routines of life. That's where Maura, 36, a waitress, found herself a year ago.Fortunately, Maura had a lifeline-a group of women friends who meet regularly to discuss their lives.Their lively discussions spurred Maura to make small but nevertheless life altering changes. She joined a gym in the next town. She changed her look with a short haircut and new black T-shirts.Eventually, Maura gathered the courage to quit her job and start her own business. Here's a challenge:If it's something you wouldn't ordinarily do, do it.Try a dish you've never eaten.Listen to music you'd ordinarily tune out. You'll discover these small things add to your emotional energy.

  2.Reclaim life's meaning.

So many of my patients tell me that their lives used to have meaning, but that somewhere along the line things went stale(厌倦的).The first step in solving this meaning shortage is to figure out what you really care about, and then do something about it.A case in point is Ivy, 57, a pioneer in investment banking.“I mistakenly believed that all the money I made would mean something.” she says.“But I feel lost, like a 22-year-old wondering what to do with her life.” Ivy's solution? She started a program that shows Wall Streeters how to donate time and money to poor children. In the process, Ivy filled her life with meaning.

3.Put yourself in the fun zone.

Most of us grown-ups are seriously fun-deprived(缺乏的).High-energy people have the same day-to-day work as the rest of us, but they manage to find something enjoyable in every situation.A real estate broker I know keeps herself amused on the job by mentally redecorating the houses she shows to clients(客户).“I love imagining what even the most run-down house could look like with a little tender loving care,” she says.“It's a challenge-and the least desirable properties are usually the most fun.” We all define fun differently, of course, but I can guarantee this:If you put just a bit of it into your day, you energy will increase quickly.

  4.Bid farewell(告别)to guilt and regret.

Everyone's past is filled with regrets that still cause pain. But from an emotional energy point of view, they are dead weights that keep us from moving forward. While they can't merely be willed away, I do recommend you remind yourself that whatever happened in the past, nothing can change that.Holding on to the memory only allows the damage to continue into the present.

  5.Make up your mind.

Say you've been thinking about cutting your hair short. Will it look stylish-or too extreme? You endlessly think it over.Having the decision hanging over your head is a huge energy drain.Every time you can't decide, you burden yourself with alternatives.Quit thinking that you have to make the right decision; instead, make a choice and don't look back.

  6.Give to get.

Emotional energy has a kind of magical quality:the more you give, the more you get back. This is the difference between emotional and physical energy with the latter. You have to get it to be able to give it.With the former, however, you get it by giving it.Start by asking everyone you meet, “How are you?” as if you really want to know, and then listen to the reply.Be the one who hears. Most of us also need to smile more often. If you don't smile at the person you love first thing in the morning, you're sucking energy out of your relationship. Finally, help another person-and make the help real, concrete.Give a massage to someone you love, or cook her dinner, then, expand the circle to work.Try asking yourself what you'd do if your goal were to be helpful rather than efficient. After all, if it's true that what goes around comes around, why not make sure that what's circulating around you is the good stuff?
