The 1896 Olympics were the first Olympic Games since ancient times. They were held in Athens, Greece in April 1896.①At that time, it was the largest international sporting event ever held. Fourteen countries, including the United States, took part in it.

The 1896 Olympic events included athletics, which was similar to track and field events, cycling, fencing and wrestling, swimming, weightlifting, tennis and gymnastics. Only male athletes were allowed to take part in the 1896 Olympics. Women were first allowed to take part in the second Olympic Games in 1900 in Paris, France.
