Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you. Well, ni-hao. (Laughter) It is such a pleasure and an honor to be here with all of you at this great university, so thank you so much for having me. I’m here today because I know that our future depends on connections like these among young people like you across the world.

That’s why when my husband and I travel abroad, we don’t just visit palaces and parliaments (国会) and meet with heads of countries. We also come to schools like this one to meet with students like you, because we believe that relationships between countries aren’t just about relationships between governments or leaders — they’re about relationships between people, particularly young people. So we view study abroad programs not just as an educational chance for students, but also as an active part of America’s foreign policy (政策).

Through the wonders of modern technology (科技), our world is more connected than ever before. Ideas can cross different countries with the click of a mouse. Companies can do business and compete with companies across the world. And we can text, email, skype with people in the world.

So studying abroad isn’t just a fun way to spend a time of learning; it is quickly becoming the key to success in our times. Because getting ahead in today’s workplaces isn’t just about getting good grades or test scores in school, which are important. It’s also about having real experience with the world beyond (超出) your borders—experience with languages, cultures and societies very different from your own. Or, as the Chinese saying goes: “It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.”

Last year in the UK at least 45 people died and 900 more were injured (受伤的) in car accidents where drivers were using their mobile phones．Yet many people continue to use them while driving even though it’s dangerous.

Research has shown that it is difficult to concentrate on (专注于) driving and talking at the same time．It can even be more dangerous than driving after drinking too much. A recent study found that when drivers were talking on their mobile phones，their stopping times were 30 percent slower than when they had drunk too much—and nearly 50 percent slower than when they were driving normally. It also found that drivers talking on mobile phones were less able to control their cars than drunk drivers.

And talking isn’t even the most serious problem, but texting is. Unbelievably, another recent study reported that 22％ of adults admitted (承认) they had sent a text message while driving at least once in the past month. An average (平均的) text message takes 90 seconds to write and send. That means for one and a half minutes a driver is looking at their phone’s screen and not at the road. The arrival of new smart phones such as the iPhone will only make things worse as they will allow users to do more things than ever before．

Using a mobile phone while driving puts others’ lives at risk. No matter how well we drive，if another driver is not careful，we are put in danger by their actions. Such drivers are selfish，careless and should have their driving licences (驾照) cancelled (撤销).

There is no doubt that mobile phones can be fun and are useful，especially when you’re in trouble．But there is no need to use them while driving. Just wait until you stop or you will probably get into trouble of your own.

Playing is serious business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.

Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get to know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly coloured toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight (视觉). When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions.

Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination (想象力). Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech (高科技) toy. That’s because a box can become anything to a child.

Crayons, paints and Play-Doh (彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to create. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills.

Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. Many valuable lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.
