Though he is one of China’s most famous scientists, Yuan Longping considers himself a farmer. In fact, he has struggled for the past five decades to help farmers.

Born into a poor farmer’s family in 1930, he graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953. Since then he has devoted himself to finding ways to increasing rice harvest without expanding the area of fields. In 1974, he began to grow a so-called super hybrid rice which produces one third more than normal rice.

Perhaps you think he is rich. Actually he lives a simple life. He cares little for money. He would much rather keep time for his hobbies. He enjoys listening to music, playing mah-jong, swimming and reading. Now he has another dream-to export his rice so that it can be grown all over the world.

Such is Yuan Longping, a simple but great person.
