I have tried many ways to be ill．I don’t wear a sweater when I should, and two days ago I walked in the rain without my shoes．But so far nothing has happened．Debbie once told me about a boy in her class who milked being away from school．He would rub(摩擦)end of the thermometer (温度计)l it went up to 39℃．Then he’d put it in his mouth and his mother would think he was really ill．

　　This morning I was trying doing that but it never went above 35℃ and I rubbed it for ten minutes．So I held the thermometer next to the light on my desk and it went up to 40℃。I thought I’d put it in my mouth and walked downstairs like that．Then my mother would take it out and she would be worried when she saw that I was rather ill．

　　The only trouble was I didn’t know the thermometer would be so hot．As soon as I put it into my mouth I burnt my tongue(舌头)！I spat the thermometer out．It fell on the floor but it didn’t break．

　　I will have to think up a better way to get my mother and father back together．

　　“Tom!Are you in bed yet?” called Mrs．White．There was no answer．Mrs．White put down her book and went to her 14-year-old son’s room．Tom was sitting in front of a bright computer screen, on the screen a colourful dragon was jumping and shouting．

　　“Oh, Tom!You are still playing on the computer．You must stop playing now, it’s already half past eleven．If you don’t go to bed soon, you will be very tired tomorrow．” Said Mrs．White．

　　“ But I have nearly beaten the dragon,” said Tom．Mrs．White could see the excitement on her son’s face．She sat down beside him．

　　“ You are always playing on the computer．You spend more time with this machine than with your family,” she said with a smile, “ what’s so special about it?Show me what it can do!”

　　Tom was very excited．“ I think this is a great computer, Mum!” he said happily．“ The hardware(硬件)is good．There is so much memory and it has some wonderful software programs．This game, Dragon player, is my favourite, but I sometimes borrow games from Danny and other friends．I don’t have to worry about any infected(被感染的)disks(磁盘)because I have a virus(病毒)detector(监测器)which can go over any disk and check it for viruses．Let me show you!” Tom began tapping keys on the keyboard．The screen changed in answer to his orders．

　　“ Oh, Tom,” laughed Mrs．White．“ I’m sure it’s a wonderful computer, but I’m afraid I don’t know what you are talking about．”

　　It's not easy to find a person with the qualities it takes to be a hero．I didn't really understand the meaning of the word “hero” until my third year in the college．

　　If you saw her, you wouldn't think she really looks the part, but she is stronger than Superman could ever be．Her name is Sandra Keierleber．I first met her at volleyball tryouts(选拔赛), but didn't notice anything special at first．As the week passed, however, she showed she had more heart than anyone．She stood out because she never gave up, no matter what．

　　Sandra isn't the tallest or the fastest-in fact, this was her first time playing volleyball and it showed-but that didn't stop her．She was always the first to arrive and the last to leave．By the end of tryouts she had found a place in everyone's heart．When the name list for new members was put up, we all waited nervously as she checked．When she stood at the door and smiled happily, all we could do was cheer．

　　After Sandra made the team, she worked even harder to improve her game．When she asked for help, we gladly taught her．She also became our fan, attending almost every school game and even joining us in the city games．We all like her, because she never thinks about doing things the easy way, or loses that smile．Because of her great efforts, she makes herself a true hero-and my hero, too．
