The huge traffic jam(阻塞) on Friday in
Seatle, which happened after a light snow, could be
attributed to the low temperature and poor city preparations, said
meteorological(气象的) officials
yesterday.
The snowfall began around 1 p.m. on Friday and was only 1 millimeter
deep, said an expert with the Seatle Meteorological
Observatory, adding that it was just “a little snow”.
However, the snow caused the city’s entire transportation system to come
to a stop until early Saturday morning.
“Low temperature is one of the reasons for the rare situation.” Said the
expert.
Historical records of the observatory showed that the temperature at
this time of year in Seatle is generally a little
above 0°C. But the
average temperature since Thursday has remained 3 degrees lower than that in
the same period of past years.
On Friday, the highest temperature on the road surface was only minus 1
degree, making it easy for the snow to pile up and soon turn to ice after cars
rolled over it.
Last Tuesday, a 0.45 millimeter snow hit this city but didn’t stop
transportation because the highest temperature that day was 0.9°C.
Another reason for the recent traffic
jam lies in the failure of the observatory to issue a warning about the
expected snowfall, which left the city’s street cleaning department and traffic
policemen unprepared.
Street cleaning vehicles(车辆) didn’t begin
preparations until 4 p.m. and began to thaw the snow at 6 p.m.. 30 vehicles
were sent to remove snow but many were stalled in traffic while on their way to
spread a new environmentally friendly chemical that Seatle
has employed this year to shaw snow.
The hotline 911 phone number for reporting traffic accidents broke down
due to the heavy surge in calls, and countless vehicles came in and out of Seatle on Friday afternoon.
