Text1 M: How did your parents
like the play they attended last week?
W: My mother
thought the language was terrible, but my father liked it.
Text2 M: I can come to your
house and pick you up in half an hour. Is it all right?
W: Good. That
means you will be here at 8:30.
Text3 W: Weren't you in
class Friday either?
M: No, I had to
take my mother to the airport. She went back to New York.
Text4 M: Do you have your
Christmas Shopping done yet?
W: Almost, I got
a watch for my brother, but I can't seem to find anything for dad. He would
probably like a book or a case for his coin collection.
Text5 W: Are these
treatments really necessary? They don't seem to help very much.
M: I'm afraid
so, Mrs Johns, just be patient and I'm sure you will
see some results soon.
Text6 W: I'm sorry. I
can't follow you. Would you mind saying that slowly?
M: No, of course
not.
Text7 W: Have you
decided what you would like?
M: Yes. First I
will have apple juice.
W: And then?
M: I will have
some chicken.
Text8 W: Is there
anything worth watching on another channel?
M:I think
there's western on.
W: Do you mind
if we watch it? I'd really like to see it.
M: Well, I
really wanted to see the baseball game.
Text9 M: Hello. This is Steve.
Who is that speaking?
W: This is Mary
speaking.
M: Can I have a
word with Ella, please?
W: There's no
Ella here. This is 8876543.
M: I'm Sorry. I
think I've dialed the wrong number.

Most shops in
Britain open at 9:00 a.m. and
close at 5:00 or 5:30 in the
evening. Small shops usually close for an hour at lunchtime. On one or two days
a week----usually Thursday and/or Friday----some large food shops stay open
until about 8:00 p.m. for late night shopping.
Nearly all shops are closed on Sunday. Newspaper shops are open in
the morning, and sell sweets and cigarettes as well. But there are legal
restrictions on selling many things on Sundays. In general, overseas visitors
don't have much difficulty knowing where to buy things. Most shops sell the
things that you would expect them to. One problem is stamps. In Britain you can
only buy these at post offices.
