1. W: When does the next train leave?
M: You have just missed one by 5 minutes.
Trains leave every fifty minutes, so you'll have to wait for a while.
2. M: The walkman I bought yesterday is just
like yours, isn't it?
W: Almost. Mine is a little bit smaller, but
it can't record. I'd rather have had one like yours.
3. W: The room is so crowded. We have hardly
begun and this place is already so full.
M: Do you think the audience should stop
smoking?
4. W: Good evening. Can you make up this
prescription, please?
M: Certainly.
W: How long will it take?
M: Just a few minutes.
5. W: Edward Restaurant.
Can I help you?
M: Yes. I'd like to reserve a table for four
at seven this evening.
W: Certainly. Your name, please?
M: Charles.
6. W: What kind of work do you do?
M: I work for a small electronics company.
W: Are you an engineer?
M: No. I'm in sales.
W: What's the name of the company?
M: White Cloud. You've probably never heard
of it.
7. M: What can I do for you?
W: May I speak to Joseph?
M: He hasn't been to the office recently.
W: What's wrong with him?
M: He had a car accident.
W: Then, can you tell me where I can find
him?
M: I am awfully sorry. Even I haven't seen
him for quite a long time.
W: May I leave a message for your manager? I
wish to contact Joseph through your manager.
M: That's a good idea. Here's a pen and a
piece of paper.
8. M: Good morning.
W: Good morning. Please take a seat. When
did you begin to feel unwell?
M: It started last night. I sneezed a lot,
and my nose was running. Now I have a headache and I feel weak all over.
W: Please open your mouth. Let me look at
your throat. Say “Ah. . . ”
M: “Ah. . . ”
W: Let me check your heartbeat. Breathe
deeply. And again. . . That's fine. You've got a cold. Otherwise, you're
healthy.
M: I must have caught cold yesterday after
playing table tennis.
W: Some medicine and an injection will soon
fix you up. Drink lots of water, and get plenty of rest. Here's your
prescription.
M: Is that all?
W: Please go to the pharmacy first. Then go
to the injection room.
M: How often shall I take my medicine,
Doctor?
W: You will get all the directions at the
pharmacy.
M: Thank you very much.
W: You're welcome.
9. W: I want to go to River Street.
M: Yes, madam.
W: The traffic seems to be very heavy. Is it
usual?
M: No. It's about the same at this time
every day. It differs somewhat according to the hour.
W: Really?
M: This is River Street.
W: Let me get off there in front of that
tall building. That's fine. How much do I owe you?
M: Eighty-five cents.
W: Here's one dollar. You may keep the
change.
M: Thank you, madam.
10. It was September 2nd, 1666, Sunday
morning in London.
Pepys and his wife were asleep, but their servants were busy preparing for the
dinner. The family planned to ask some friends to come to their home at noon. At three o'clock, one servant saw the bright colour of a fire
in the sky, it became so bright that he called Pepys to look at it. Pepys put
on his clothes and went to the window to watch. It seemed far away, so he went
back to bed again. At daybreak, the servant came again and said that the fire
burned down 300 houses in the night and it was still burning. Pepys went to
tell the King quickly. The King sent him to put out the fire near London Bridge.
When he got there, most of the houses had been burned down. He learned that the
fire started in a baker's shop. The baker's house caught fire from a hot oven.
The houses were dry because of a long hot summer. The fire moved quickly to
other houses. Thus began the Great Fire of London. It went on for almost five
days. It burned down 13, 000 houses. Most of the old city was gone forever.
