浙江省苍南中学10-11学年高二上学期期中考试

(A)

It has always been said that women are not good drivers, because they simply don’t have very good driving ability. On the other hand, most car accidents happen to men; very few happen to women.

From this, we can see that women are much more careful while driving. Another very interesting fact is that in the past, women preferred to let their husbands be the only driver in the family rather than have a driving license. Somehow they were prevented from making this step in their life, but nowadays there are many women that want to pass their driving tests at an early age.

However, we have to admit that men are more skillful drivers than women, but this does not mean that a woman cannot become a good driver by accumulating (积累) experience. So more and more teenagers and women around the age of thirty now want to pass their driving tests. While taking their driving lessons, they also have a number of special lessons with their parents or somebody in the family that has a driving license. This is just to improve their driving abilities and help them to pass the tests more easily.

To conclude, we can say that women are not such bad drivers. They just need more experience than men in order to be able to drive well. And on the other hand, there are a number of women that show better driving skills than the men around them.

"How come the boys always get to go somewhere but we have to stay here?" Toby, my cousin, complained. Soon we had an idea of finding a hidden treasure, but we had to find out how to make this happen. We went upstairs to my parents' bedroom which was always tidy and smelled like my mother's perfume. Opening the silver lid of the glass jar, we looked nervously inside and removed my mother's pretty pearl ring and diamond ring. Mom only wore them when she got dressed up to go somewhere, so Toby believed she wouldn't miss them. We wrapped them up tightly in toilet paper and quickly ran out into the big field where we often pretended tO ride wild horses.

We brought along a big kitchen spoon to dig a hole and buried the rings. "Don't tell anyone." Toby made me promise. For some unknown reason we forgot to go back later.

It was almost a week before my mother realized her rings were missing and she was driven mad. The look on my face must have been a dead give-away and it wasn't long before I told the whole story about my adventure with Toby. Only then did I realize the

seriousness of my crime.

"Show me where," my mother demanded. So off we went for the rings. But I couldn't remember exactly where! We dug in several places without success. Eventually we gave up, and amazingly my mother didn't shout at me.

One day about six years later, a farmer found a pearl ring in the soil and he kindly handed it over to my mother, who was overjoyed. This discovery started an exciting new search. But the other was never discovered.

Many years later, I noticed my sister wearing the pearl ring. When I asked my mother how, she answered, "Well, I always planned to give my good rings to my daughters someday and you were supposed to get the diamond one!"

It was Christmas Day 1999. On CNN, talk show host Larry King was interviewing Stephen Hawking .

“What, professor, puzzled you the most?” King asked, “what do you think about the most?”

Hawking immediately replied, “Women”.

It’s a comfort that Hawking, one of the smartest men in the world, is puzzled by the opposite sex. But, that’s not surprising, according to Satoshi Kanazawa. Bright people are no better than anyone else at making smart decisions about common things, he says. There include finding a mate, maintaining family relationships, raising children, finding the way home, and dealing with a variety of basic life needs.

That’s because there are several kinds of formal “intelligence(智力),” Kanazawa argues. Being smart one way does not necessary mean smart in another way. This view is sure to cause arguments among scientists who think about thinking. That is because it disagrees with the common view that general intelligence is a single thing. In that view, it is not, as Kanazawa and others say, a set of independent mental areas.

Kanazawa says that some kinds of intelligence developed slowly over time. Many people have heard about what is called “emotional intelligence”. Now, psychologists(心理学家) have discovered recognize faces, and locate(确定位置)oneself in a new environment.

But, is there proof to support the theory that intelligence comes in many forms? “Actually, there is quite a lot of proof,” Kanazawa says “If there were only one type of intelligence”, he adds “Then people with high IQs should be ‘smart’ in every way.”

In one test, a psychologist took a group of subjects on a hike, walking into the forest. He then told them to find their way back. The high IQ people were no more likely to be able to find out where they were. In another experiment, a researcher asked people to find their way to a specific location in a computer maze(迷宫).Once again, high IQ did not give them any edge.
