The President's fifty-birthday was coming, and he decided to set free some prisoners of the same 16 on the day. Not too many, but one from each of the twenty or thirty prisons which were too crowded in the small state. They would have to be carefully selected 17not to give trouble 18they were out. The following morning was clear and bright. Mario was given no time to say good-bye to 25but a guard led him to the prison gate. 26he set off up the long white road 27to the town. The surroundings, the noise, the absence of the firm prison walls terrified him. Soon he sat down 28the side of the road to think a little. After he had thought for a long time, for his brain worked slowly,he 29up his mind. He remained(停留) 30he was, 31calmly for some time until at 32 he saw a police car coming. When the young policeman got out of the car demanding to know 34was wrong,Mario 35him heavily but quickly with his knife just behind the right ear.
