M: It’s Alice’s birthday tomorrow.
W: Are you sure?
I think it should be the day after tomorrow.
M: Well, let
me see. Oh, I’m sorry. You’re right. It is the day after tomorrow. Shall we buy
her a present?
W: Yes, of
course. Shall we give her some flowers?
M: Flowers
are lovely. But I think it’s better to buy her a nice box of chocolates.
W: Alice doesn’t like sweet
things. Didn’t you know that?
M:You’re right. Er…I know.
We can give her a record. She loves music.
W: That’s a good idea. Let’s go to the music shop and choose one for
her.
7.
M: Morning, Susan. How was your
holiday in the town?
W: It was
wonderful . Thanks. Some friends went with us and we had a great time.
M: Where did you
stay? In a hotel?
W: No. We camped
in the mountain. We cooked all by ourselves over an open fire.
M: Sounds great.
How about the weather?
W: The sun shone
every day.
M: Did you like
the people there?
W: Yeah, they
were great too. We met some farmers and had a chat with them in their house.
M: When did you
get back? Last night?
W: No, we
came back this morning. We got up at 4:00, left at 4:30 and arrived here at
8:30. I’m so tired now. What about you? Did you enjoy your weekend?
M: Yes, but I
just stayed at home. The weather is terrible these days.
8.
W: Are you doing anything special
tonight?
M: No, Why?
W: How about
going to see a movie? It will do you good to get your mind off your work for a
while.
M: That’s a good
idea. But what shall we go to see?
W: I’ve checked
on the Internet. There’re some new films on in the cinema.
M: Is there anything interesting on?
W: There’s also
a new Peking Opera put on for the first time. I wonder if you are interested.
M: Why not?
W: I don’t
think we have time to go back to the hotel if we go to watch the opera, so let’s
get something in the nearby restaurant.
W: OK.
9.
W: First of all, I would like
you to tell me a bit about what you’ve been doing.
M: Well, I
left school after I’d done my A-levels. I really wanted to study art. But a
friend of my father’s offered me a job, to be an accountant in the city.
W: I see. In
your application, you say that you only spent half a year with this accounting
film. Why was that?
M: To be honest,
I didn’t like it. So I entered the Art
College a year ago.
W: What do you
do in your spare time?
M: I like
jazz and folk music. I go to the theater occasionally and act a bit myself. I
also like reading and I’ve done a bit of photography. What’s more, I’ve
traveled a lot, especially in Europe.
W :Very interesting.
I think that’s all I want to ask about your background. I will inform you as
soon as we make the decision.
M: OK, thank you
very much.

During the early morning of
February 24, George White was traveling on a country road in Newberry when he
fell asleep, ran off the road, and hit a tree head on. The accident was severe
and he was unconscious. After 30 minutes or so, a newspaper carrier passed by.
She noticed the crash and called 911. Before help arrived, this lady, a
complete stranger, sat in her car beside George’s vehicle, and called out to
him repeatedly: “ Help is on the way.” She wanted to get out of her car and
help him in some way, but she couldn’t. She could only offer the comfort of her
voice because she was handicapped and could not walk.
Several minutes
later, the ambulance came and George was sent to a hospital. He is now home,
and should have a complete recovery over the next few months.
