What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It isn’t the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools which makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter (木匠). You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate (调查), how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further; he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer he gets to many questions is into a large set of ideas about how the world works.   The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There’s no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration (实证) must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason why investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the Theory of Relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy(正确性)of his mathematics was later tested through investigation. Einstein’s ideas were proved to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Last year, we spent our winter vacation in Queensland, Australia. The beaches there are beautiful, and we spent a lot of time playing by the sea, swimming and surfing. One day, we were on a beach just south of a city called Cairns, when we had a very alarming experience.

Neomi, my little sister, was looking for shells in the sand down near the waves when she shouted to me, “Hey, Lan! Look what I’ve found!” I ran down to have a look, and saw her pointing at a strange black object that was half buried in the sand. “What is it?” she asked.

Just then, my father came over. “ Are you enjoying yourself, you two?” he asked. Then he saw the strange black thing. “What’s that?” he said, bending down to take a closer look. Suddenly he said, “Quick kids, get away from here. Go and play somewhere else.”

We went and played further away down the beach, while Dad ran up to the shop near the beach to make a phone call. About 20 minutes later, we heard the noise of cars and trucks arriving, and a lot of soldiers ran onto the beach. They told everyone to leave the beach and stay away from it.

About half an hour later, we were sitting with Dad in a café a few hundred meters from the beach, when we heard a terrible explosion. “What was that?” we asked Dad. “That was the thing you found,” he said. “One of the soldiers down there told me it was a Japanese bomb from World War II. Sometimes they get washed up on the beaches here.”
