5.

W: Hi, Bob, I haven’t seen you for quiet a few days.

M: Well, I just flew back from Paris. I was in London for a week.

6-8

W: Your father and Sally have gone to get the car. Let’s wait for them here on the bench. M: It's nice to sit down. We’ve been walking for hours. W: Did you like the White House? M: Oh, yes. I thought it was beautiful. I wanted to stay longer. W: I did, too. But we’ve got a lot of things to see. M: The line wasn’t long this morning, was it? W: No, it wasn’t. We were lucky. M: I wonder if the President and his family use the rooms we saw. They look more like a

museum than somebody’ house. W: Yes. They are the public rooms. The President’s family lives upstairs. M: What do they use the public rooms for? W: For important affairs. The President usually entertains members of the government and

visitors from other countries. M: I hope I could get a reception at the White House sometime. W: Well, if you do something important when you grow up, maybe you will. Who knows!

9-11

W: Hello, Mr. Jackson.

M: Hello, Mrs. Jones, come in and sit down. What’s the matter?

W: I have a pain in my tooth.

M: Do you often have this pain?

W: No, I don’t. I have never had a bad one like it before.

M: When did it start?

W: Three hours ago.

M: You mean it started at one?

W: Yes, as soon as I finished lunch.

M: Well, have some porridge, milk and soup for meals for two days, and then you will feel better.

W: Can you give me some medicine? It’s very painful.

M: Yes, I will give your pills, take one three times a day, and come here in three days, I will pull it if necessary.

12-14

W: I've given you a corner room on the fifth floor with a nice view of the park. Shall I send

your luggage to your room? M: No, that’s all right. I haven’t got any. I wasn’t intending to stay the night in town, but I

missed my plane. By the way, do you happen to have a store? I need a toothbrush and some

  envelopes.

W: We have one on the left of the hall, but it is already closed. M: I really need these things. Is there a store anywhere that’s open at this hour? W: Certainly, that’s not difficult. Just ten minutes walk. There is one open 24 hours. Turn right

when you leave the hotel. Go to the second stoplight and turn left. You'll see the store on the

right hand side of the road.

15-16

M: Rebecca, I come to say sorry to you.

W: Why? Peter?

M: I can’t find the dictionary you lent me.

W: Don’t worry, Peter, maybe someone is using it now.

M: But nobody is in the classroom now.

W: Well, nothing serious, Peter. It’s only an old dictionary.

M: I will buy a new dictionary for you.

W: No, I won’t hear of that. If I need a new dictionary, I will buy one myself.

M: I am sorry for being so careless.

W: It doesn’t matter, let’s talk about something else.

17-20

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Joshua Haines House, a long time home of the famous congressman and later judge. Although Haines and his family lived here from 1880 until his death in 1915, he was not the original owner of the house. It was built much earlier for a banker who later became a minister. Following the Haines family, the house was owned by an industrialist. It was bought in 1924 by the State and opened to the public shortly after. The Haines family returned some possessions and furniture to the house for visitors’ enjoyment. I would like to pull your attention to the library on your left. Through the open door, you can see the desk where the congressman wrote many of his famous speeches. The drawing room to your right was used of course when guests visited. But the congressman often sat with his close friends in the kitchen at the back of the house. It was there they discussed bills that later became law. The Haines liked to spend some time each day in the sun room just off this house. It was here that Haines liked to write letters and sometimes play the violin while his wife, Martha, sewed or took care of her plants. We will now visit the rooms I have just described, beginning with the library.
