On Thursday afternoon Mrs Clark locked the door and went to the women¡¯s club as usual. It was a pleasant way of passing time ¡¡46¡¡ ¡¡an old woman who lived ¡¡47¡¡ .

When she came home she sensed something ¡¡48¡¡ . Had someone got in? The back door and the windows were all¡¡ 49 ¡¡and there was no sign of forced entry(Ç¿ÐнøÈë). Had ¡¡50 ¡¡been taken? She went from room ¡¡51¡¡ ¡¡room checking, and found her camera and spare watch ¡¡52¡¡ .

The following Thursday she went out at her usual¡¡ time, but didn¡¯t go to the ¡¡53¡¡ ¡¡. Instead, she took a short walk in a park nearby and came home, letting ¡¡54¡¡ ¡¡in through the back door.

She settled down to wait and see what would ¡¡55¡¡ .

It was 4 o¡¯clock when the front doorbell rang. Mrs Clarke was¡¡ 56¡¡ ¡¡tea at the time. The bell rang again, and then she heard her letter-box being pushed open. Picking ¡¡57¡¡ ¡¡the kettle (ºø)of boiling water, she moved quietly ¡¡58¡¡ the door. A ¡¡59¡¡ ¡¡of wire(ÌúË¿) appeared through the letter-box., and then a ¡¡60¡¡ ¡¡. The wire turned and caught around the knob(Ô²ÐÎÐýÅ¥) on the door lock. Mrs Clarke raised the kettle and ¡¡61 ¡¡the water over the hand. A sharp cry was heard outside as the ¡¡62¡¡ ¡¡fell to the floor and the hand was pulled back, which was followed by the ¡¡63¡¡ ¡¡of running feet.

It wasn¡¯t long ¡¡64¡¡ ¡¡the police caught the thief. And Mrs Clarke was greatly ¡¡65¡¡ ¡¡at the club for her successful self-protection.
