阅读下列短文, 从所给的四个选项中, 选出最佳答案。

Albie is old, with a slow, heavy walk. He wears his hair short and his trousers low. He works for some people who own small country houses.

The other day, he was in a little dustbin shelter ( 遮蔽物) for the neighbors up the road. He painted shed (棚) green and let it dry. I went to look at it, putting my finger to the smooth paint. But the next day Albie came back with a machine and roughed up (粗磨, 使不平) the paint. He was adding another coating. He said "That is not the way Albie works. What I make by hand does not look unprofessional(外行的)."

Nothing in Albie's world holds secrets from him so far as houses are concerned, because at some time he either built it, repaired it or decorated it. The fuse (保险丝) box, the stone patio (用石块砌的院子) , the shed, the small house, these are all Albie's work.

The people Albie works for do big businesses. Albie does not know how to buy and sell securities (证券). But when these men want to have sheds built or patios laid, they come to Albie. People may wonder why Albie gets paid so little for doing so much. The reason is simple. He leads a quiet and simple life. He is always alone with his serene thoughts.

For years scientists have been worried about the effects of air pollution on the earth’s natural conditions. Some believe the air inside many houses may be more dangerous than the air outside. It may be one hundred times worse.

Indoor air pollution can cause a person to feel tired, to suffer eye-pain, headache and other problems. Some pollutants( 污染 物) can cause breathing disorders, diseases of blood and even cancer, Most scientists agree that every modern house has some kind of indoor pollution. People began to notice the problem in the early 1970s. It is that when builders began making houses and offices they did not waste energy. To do this they built buildings that limited the flow of air between inside and outside. They also began using manmade building materials. These materials are now known to let out harmful gases. As the problem became more serious, scientists began searching for a way to deal with it. They discovered a natural pollution control system for building— green plants. Scientists do not really know how plants control air pollution. They believe that a plant’s leaves absorb or take in the pollutants. In exchange the plant lets out oxygen through its leaves and through its tiny organizations on its roots. Scientists suggest that all buildings should have one large plant or several small plants inside for every nine square metres of space. Studies of different plants show that each absorbs different chemicals. So the most effective way to clean the air is to use different kinds of plants. Having green plants inside your house can make it a prettier and more healthy place.

Generally speaking, indoor air pollution may be more harmful than the air outside because ________.

  A. the man - made building materials let out dangerous gases inside houses

  B. there may be more harmful gases outside houses

  C. the flow of air indoors is limited

  D. indoor air pollution can make a person seriously ill

The most effective way to clean the air is to use different kinds of plants because________.

  A. they may let out more oxygen which people need

  B. they can absorb different kinds of the harmful indoor chemicals

  C. they can take in all kinds of indoor pollutants

        D. they can make your house prettier and more healthy

Young people and older people do not always agree. They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way.

Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills.

There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn photo-taking or drawing. Others sit around and talk or sing. Each teenager chooses his own way to pass his free time.

When people live together, they should have rules. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, “Why did it happen? What should we do about it?”

One of the teenagers has said something about it, “You have to stop thinking only about yourself. You learn how to think about the group.”
