摘要:3.What is the main idea of the passage? 8 WASHINGTON -- Middle-aged men who ate seven or more eggs a week had a higher risk of earlier death, US researchers reported on Wednesday. Men with diabetes who ate any eggs at all raised their risk of death during a 20-year period studied, according to the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study adds to an ever-growing body of evidence, much of it contradictory, about how safe eggs are to eat. It did not examine what about the eggs might affect the risk of death. Men without diabetes could eat up to six eggs a week with no extra risk of death, Dr. Luc Djousse and Dr. J. Michael Gaziano of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School found. "Whereas egg consumption of up to six eggs a week was not associated with the risk of all-cause mortality, consumption of eggs a week was associated with a 23 percent greater risk of death," they wrote. "However, among male physicians with diabetes, any egg consumption is associated with a greater risk of all-cause mortality, and there was suggestive evidence for a greater risk of MI and stroke." They urged more study in the general population. Eggs are rich in cholesterol, which in high amounts can clog and raise the risk of heart attack and stroke. One expert on nutrition and heart disease said the study suggests middle-aged men, at least, should watch how many eggs they eat. "More egg on our faces? It's really hard to say at this point, but it still seems, if you're a middle-aged male physician and enjoy eggs more than once a day, that having some of the egg left on your face may be better than having it go down your gullet," said Dr. Robert Eckel of the University of Colorado and a former president of the American Heart Association.

Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes (基因) decide. In fact, because you have two
parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If
both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall
you're going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don't decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to
your full potential (潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected
height.
No doubt (怀疑) you're wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There's no perfect or right
answer. In general, kids grow about 2 inches (6 centimeters) a year between age 3 and the time when they
start puberty (when your body starts changing and becoming more grown up).
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and 2
inches there are not nearly as important as the height you're at now, how you've been growing up to this point,
and what other changes your body may be going through.
Don't be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt (高峰)
during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier
or later -between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.
You'll usually begin to notice that you're growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show
the first changes of puberty.

The more money a married woman earns, the less housework she will do regardless of how much her spouse earns, according to a new study.

A researcher at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that big paychecks(薪水)equal less cooking and cleaning in a study of 918 women in double-income families.Married women who made $40,000 or more a year spent nearly one hour less on housework per day than women who earned $10,000 or less, according to the findings based on data(数据)from the National Survey of Families and Households.

“Up to this point, people have thought that the important thing was how much money a woman makes compared to her husband, but the only thing that matters is how much money she earns,”Sanjiv Gupta, the author of the study, said in an interview.

The study, which is published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, showed that for every $7,500 in annual income that a married woman earned, she performed one hour less of housework each week.

Gupta confirmed the connection between money, housework and spousal relationships in a separate study using data on nearly 2,000 couples in the United States and Europe.

The average earnings of American women increased by $6,200 between 1965 and 1995, according to the U.S.Census Bureau(人口普查局).During that time, the amount of time married women spent on weekly chores fell by 14.6 hours.

Since the husband's earnings had no effect on the amount of housework a woman does, the finding suggests that women are using their own money to reduce their housework by doing things such as ordering food from restaurants instead of cooking, and hiring cleaners instead of doing the cleaning themselves, Gupta said.

The north magnetic pole(磁极)is no longer a resident of Canada. It has drifted across the Canadian Arctic and is now angling toward Siberia.

Not to be confused with the geographic North Pole—the northern extremity of the Earth’s axis(地轴),the north magnetic pole(where the Earth’s magnetic field is directed downward)is moving due to natural changes in the Earth’s magnetic field,a process that originates about 3000 kilometers below our feet,in the outer core(核心)of the planet. But scientists are now noticing that the magnetic pole has picked up its pace.

Over the past century, the pole has been migrating at an average speed of about 10 kilometers per year, says Larry Newitt, head of Geomagnetic Laboratory at Natural Resources Canada in Ottawa.Since the 1970s,this speed has increased to about 50 kilometers per year.

Scientists are wondering why the speed is increasing, says Newitt. One hypothesis(假说)relates it to “magnetic jerks”,sudden shifts(变化)in the rate of change of the magnetic field. There have been three jerks in the past four decades, each one correlating to an increases in speed.

If the north magnetic pole continues at its current rate,it could reach Siberia by 2056.

“For most of recorded history, the pole has been a part of Canada, and now it’s not,”says Newitt.“It may be a blow to our collective psyche, but other than that,it doesn’t have a major effect on most people’s existence.”
