The more money a married woman earns, the less housework she will do regardless of how much her spouse earns, according to a new study.
A researcher at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that big paychecks(薪水)equal less cooking and cleaning in a study of 918 women in double-income families.Married women who made $40,000 or more a year spent nearly one hour less on housework per day than women who earned $10,000 or less, according to the findings based on data(数据)from the National Survey of Families and Households.
“Up to this point, people have thought that the important thing was how much money a woman makes compared to her husband, but the only thing that matters is how much money she earns,”Sanjiv Gupta, the author of the study, said in an interview.
The study, which is published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, showed that for every $7,500 in annual income that a married woman earned, she performed one hour less of housework each week.
Gupta confirmed the connection between money, housework and spousal relationships in a separate study using data on nearly 2,000 couples in the United States and Europe.
The average earnings of American women increased by $6,200 between 1965 and 1995, according to the U.S.Census Bureau(人口普查局).During that time, the amount of time married women spent on weekly chores fell by 14.6 hours.
Since the husband's earnings had no effect on the amount of housework a woman does, the finding suggests that women are using their own money to reduce their housework by doing things such as ordering food from restaurants instead of cooking, and hiring cleaners instead of doing the cleaning themselves, Gupta said.

Many everyday American expressions are based on colors.Red is a hot color.Americans often use it to express heat. They may say they are red hot about something unfair. When they are red hot, they are very angry about something.
People sometimes say they are in the pink when they are in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the 20th century. It probably comes from the fact that many babies are born with a nice pink color that shows that they are in good health.
Blue is a cool color. The traditional blues music in the United States is the opposite(相反的)of red hot music.Blues is slow and sad.Someone who is blue is very sad.
The color green is natural for trees and grass. But it is an unnatural color for humans.A person who has a sick feeling stomach may say she feels a little green.A passenger on a boat who is feeling very sick from high waves may look very green.Sometimes a person may be upset because he does not have something as nice as a friend has, like a fast new car. That person may say he is green with envy(妒忌).Some people are green with envy because a friend has more dollars or greenbacks.Dollars are called greenbacks because that is the color of the backside of the paper money.
People describe a day in which everything goes wrong as a black day.The date of a major tragedy is remembered as a black day.Blackouts were coming during World War II.Officials would order all lights in a city turned off to make it difficult for enemy planes to find a target in the dark of night.

The north magnetic pole(磁极)is no longer a resident of Canada. It has drifted across the Canadian Arctic and is now angling toward Siberia.
Not to be confused with the geographic North Pole—the northern extremity of the Earth’s axis(地轴),the north magnetic pole(where the Earth’s magnetic field is directed downward)is moving due to natural changes in the Earth’s magnetic field,a process that originates about 3000 kilometers below our feet,in the outer core(核心)of the planet. But scientists are now noticing that the magnetic pole has picked up its pace.
Over the past century, the pole has been migrating at an average speed of about 10 kilometers per year, says Larry Newitt, head of Geomagnetic Laboratory at Natural Resources Canada in Ottawa.Since the 1970s,this speed has increased to about 50 kilometers per year.
Scientists are wondering why the speed is increasing, says Newitt. One hypothesis(假说)relates it to “magnetic jerks”,sudden shifts(变化)in the rate of change of the magnetic field. There have been three jerks in the past four decades, each one correlating to an increases in speed.
If the north magnetic pole continues at its current rate,it could reach Siberia by 2056.
“For most of recorded history, the pole has been a part of Canada, and now it’s not,”says Newitt.“It may be a blow to our collective psyche, but other than that,it doesn’t have a major effect on most people’s existence.”
1.Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “angling”.
