We may be very pleased with the rapid progress we have made in every field of study, but the way to test a student's knowledge and ability still remains as it was. We have almost done nothing to improve our examination system (制度).
It is well known that the examination system we are now using may be a good way of testing a student's memory, but it can tell you nothing about a student's ability. It does no good to students ability. It does no good to students and teachers.
As soon as a child begins school, he enters a world of examination that will decide his future or job.
In fact a good examination system should train a student to think himself, but it now does anything but that. So students are encouraged to remember what is taught. It doesn't enable them to gain more and more knowledge. The students who come out first in the examination often may not be the best in their studies.
Besides, the examinations often drive teachers to cram (填鸭式地教) all the time. They can't teach freely. They are forced to train students what to do with the coming examinations from time to time.
There must be some simpler and better way to test a student's true ability besides knowledge, and that is what we should do at once.

To me, life without music would not be exciting. I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert and listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone's life, whether he realizes it or not. Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music? Would the feeling, the plot(情节), and the great interests, be so exciting or moving? I’m not sure about that.
Now, we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning—the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if we look at some parts of music more closely, we discover them in our everyday life too— in the rhythm of the sea, the melody of a bird in the woods and so on. So music has meaning for everyone, in some way or other. And, of course, it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music.
It is well said, “Through music a child enters into a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong.”
1.What does the writer want to tell us?
A. Life with music everywhere. B. Life cannot be enjoyed without music.
C. Importance of music in life. D. Development of music in history.
2.According to the writer, __________.
A. those who do not go to the concerts don't need music at all
B. a film without music will not seem so exciting or interesting
C. only through music can a child enter into a world of beauty
D. nobody but musicians can discover music in the rhythm of the sea
