With alarming regularity, we read about oil tankers having accidents near land and the terrible consequences of the oil spills (泄露) on people, nature, and the environment.

Millions of dollars have been used in developing special chemicals to help dismiss the spills and to clean up the animals, beaches, and land spoiled by the oil.Unfortunately, when many of these chemicals are used, more damage is caused to the environment, especially to lives in the sea.

Of all of today's environmental disasters, an oil spill may actually be one of the least serious.Although oil is poisonous, it is a natural material. In the end, it breaks down naturally. There are, of course, long-term effects, but it is usually more serious in the short term.

Nature by itself works better than chemical materials, but when there is a spill we demand that governments act immediately with as much hi-tech knowledge as possible. In 1967 the tanker Torrey Canyon sank off the Scilly Isles near the coast of England and spilled 120,000 tones of oil into the ocean. If you go there today, you will find it hard to see any sign that it ever happened.

Governments seem to accept the risk of transporting millions of tons of oil by ship every day so that we can fill up our cars and drive around and cause even more environmental damage.Interestingly, the biggest companies in the world produce cars, and the next biggest supply the gasoline to make them run.

We should be thinking more about reducing our dependency on oil.Governments should be encouraging research into new technologies, such as cars run by solar power (太阳能) , electricity, hydrogen, and so on.Much of this research has, in the past, been held back by the oil, gas, and coal.

If the world's millions of cars were 10% more efficient (高效的)—and the industry could easily produce cars at least twice as efficient,we would need many fewer tankers crossing the oceans each year.If this happened, the risks of oil spills would be reduced, and the air we breathe would be cleaner and fresher, too.

By the end of last year, she said, CYDF had collected nearly 700 million yuan in donations, which has helped the establishment of 2, 074 Hope primary schools and enabled more than 1. 25 million dropouts to return to school classrooms.

Three “Hope Stars” also attended the party. Exchange a glance with someone, and then look away. Do you realize that you have made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer and you have made a different statement. Hold it for 3 seconds, and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a person’s stare without being friendly, rude, or aggressive. If you are on a lift, what stare-time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you typically do. You very likely give other passengers a quick glance to size them up and to assure them that you mean no harm. Since being close to another person signals the possibility of interaction, you need to send out a signal telling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contacts. That is what sociologist Erving Goffiman calls “a dimming of the lights”. You look down at the floor, at the indicator lights, anywhere but into another passenger’s eyes. Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on a lift, you will make the other person extremely uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself.

If you hold eye contacts for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and the situation. For instance, a man and a woman communicate interest in this manner. They stare at each other for about 3 seconds at a time, and then drop their eyes down for 3 seconds, before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare, he signals, “I know you”, “I am interested in you” or “You look peculiar and I am curious about you.” This type of stare often produces hostile feelings.

  60. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ______.

  A. every glance has its significance

  B. a glance carries more meaning than words

  C. a stare longer than 3 seconds is unacceptable

  D. staring at a person is an expression of interest

  61. If you want to be left alone on a lift the best thing to do is ______.

  A. to look into another passenger’s eyes

  B. to keep a distance from other passengers

  C. to avoid eye contacts with other passengers

  D. to signal you don’t mean to do harm to anyone

  62. By “a dimming of the lights”, Erving Goffiman means ______.

  A. closing one’s eyes B. turning off the lights

  C. stopping glancing at others D. reducing stare-time to the minimum

  63. The passage mainly discusses ______.

  A. the limitations of eye contacts

  B. the exchange of ideas through eye contacts

  C. proper behavior in different situations in people’s daily life

  D. the role of eye contacts in communication between people

Scientists have found that regular but moderate consumption of alcohol by the middle-aged can protect against some of Britain’s biggest killers, including heart disease, stroke(中风).

The effect of up to two drinks a day for women and three for men is so marked that some researchers believe that middle-aged people should treat alcohol like a dietary supplement(补充).

“The results show that alcohol can be good for your health provided that you adopt a careful drinking style,”said Professor Morten Cronbaek from the Centre for Alcohol Research in Denmark.

“Age-related diseases like thrombosis(血栓)take a long time to develop but alcohol seems able to delay it by years.”

In his study, Cronbaek mentioned 57, 000 Danes, aged 55~65, to find links between their drinking habits and death rates. He found that people who drank little often had a significant reduction in mortality(死亡率).

The study is still following the Danes but early sighs are that such drinkers will live up to several years longer than heavy drinkers or teetotallers(绝对戒酒者).

Alcohol also reduced blood’s tendency to form clots, a crucial factor in strokes and heart attacks. However, both benefits disappeared in heavy or binge drinkers.

Older research had suggested that it is only red wine that has health benefits, but the new studies indicate that the effect can be seen with any alcohol. One, led by Professor Eric Rimm of Harvard medical school, shows that for middle-aged men up to two drinks a day could have the risk of heart attack-and that whisky and beer are just as effective as wine.
