paintings. You see paintings of horses, deer, and bison (野牛) that are drawn in black, brown, red and yellow.
Your first question would probably be"Who did this?"
This is what happened to four French boys in 1940. They found the Lascaux caves. The paintings the
boys discovered in those caves are 17,000 years old. They were drawn by the ancient people called
Cro-Magnons.
Cro-Magnons looked much like people of today. They used tools, such as fishing nets that look familiar
too. But their art was extremely good. The main cave at Lascaux is called the Great Hall of Bulls (公牛 ),
which has a picture of bulls and horses in many colors. The largest animal is 18 feet long. There are smaller
animals, such as bison, stags (牡鹿) and a bear. There is also a strange spotted two-horned (两只角的) animal.
To the left of the main cave are the most famous paintings that are the drawings of multicolored animals.
One painting is called Little Horses. On the ceiling are horses and cows. The most unusual sight may be in the
Shaft of the Dead Man where there is a thinoceros (犀牛), a carefully drawn dead man, a wounded bison and
a bird.
Why did Cro-Magnon artists do these beautiful drawings on cave walls? Did the drawings call upon some
magical power? Did the Cro-Magnon people hope that the drawings would bring luck? There is one thing the
paintings seem to tell us. The Cro- Magnons had a sense of wonder about the world. They looked at beauty
and they understood it.

Jungle country is not friendly to man, but it is possible to survive there. You must have the right equipment and you must know a few important things about woodcraft. Then your chances of staying alive are very good.
No one should go into the jungle without the right equipment. You need light weight clothing, a good knife, and a compass. Fishhooks and a line, a rifle, matches in a waterproof container and a poncho are necessary too. So is a mosquito net to protect the head.
In the jungle you can get hopeless lost within five minutes after leaving a known landmark. That is why you should always carry a compass. In open country, during the day, you can tell which way o go by studying the sun. At night the stars are sure guides o direction. But in most places the jungle rooftop is so thick that it is impossible to see the sun or the stars. Again and again you must check your position by the compass.
Keep alert. Watch the ground in front of you carefully. Stop and listen now and again. Avoid haste, and rest often. In a place that is hot and humid, the person who sets a fast pace will soon become tired. A steady, even pace is wisest in the long run.
If you lose your way, don’t panic. Try to desire how long it has been since you were sure of your position. Mark the spot where you are with blazes on a tree. Put them on four sides of the tree, so that you will be able to see them from any direction. Then you can begin retracing your steps, knowing that you can always find the spot from which you started. Except in an emergency, never try to travel through the jungle at night.
Whenever possible, it is wise to follow streams and rivers that are going in your general direction. This may cause you many extra miles of travel. But in the end it will save time and energy. Nothing is more exhausting than hacking a trail cross-through umbrella jungle.
If a river is broad and deep and has no rapids, rafting is the best means of travel. Bamboo grows along the banks of many jungle streams. Since it is hollow and extremely strong, it makes a perfect raft.
Surviving in the jungle is a science. The jungle people have become perfect in this science, and you can too. Learn as much as you can about what to expect in the jungle. Make sure you have the right equipment. Then no part of the jungle will be able to “live off” it for a long time.
The author probably advises against traveling at night because ________.
one tends to move too slowly at night
some animals will attack you
emergencies occur most frequently at night
it is more difficult to check your position
Following streams and rivers will help you to ________.
avoid animal’s attacks

It’s the place where smart people make smart machines work even smarter. But for the people who work in it, Silicon Valley (硅谷) is more than just a high technology hothouse. It’s also in the heart of sunny California, a great place to start a family and raise kids. What could be better?
But something is happening to the children. Up until the age of two they develop normally. Their proud parents watch and smile as they take their first steps and speak their first words. But then everything seems to go backwards. The children become locked into their own small world, unable to communicate at all.
They call it the “curse of Silicon Valley,” but the medical name for the condition is autism(孤独症). It used to be thought that autism was a mental illness. Now doctors are sure that it is a disease transmitted genetically (遗传). It seems that the people leading the communications revolution are having children who cannot communicate at all.
But even the parents have trouble communicating. Asperger’s Syndrome (综合症) is connected with autism. People who have it are highly intelligent and often brilliant with numbers or systems but have no social skills, which makes Asperger’s sufferers into excellent computer professionals. Unfortunately, many of the children of two Asperger’s parents in Silicon Valley seem to be developing serious autism.
There is little anyone can do. And there is no cure in sight. Some argue that no cure should be found.“It may be that autistics are essentially (本质上) different from normal people, but that these differences make them valuable for the evolution (进化) of the human race,” says Dr Kirk Wilhelm of the University of California.“To remove the genes (基因) for autism could be terrible.
It seems that the children of Silicon Valley are paying the price of genius.
