摘要: Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. A dangerous story B. I was to blame for my friend’s death C. I’ll never forget my best friend D. I regret saying yes to the boys 答案:56-59 CBCB B Every eight-year-old girl has a dream. Many want to be princesses, some want to be cowgirls, a few want to be presidents. Me? I wanted to see the penguins. So, at a time when most of my friends were spending their money on Barbie dolls and colorful hair ties, I was saving for a trip to New Zealand. A small and relatively unknown island off the coast of New Zealand, Snares Island is home to some 25,000 penguins. When I first heard of this penguin paradise,my eight-year-old heart was captured and I was determined that, one way or another, I would see those penguins. I didn’t have a bank account, but I did have a small piggy bank .I spent my days working hard to earn money, and my evenings figuring out how much more I needed to earn each year to take the trip when I turned 18. I weeded my mom’s garden, made my brother’s bed, and killed spiders for my sister, then put every hard-earned dime into that bank. Every day, I would look at my progress and congratulate myself on being one step closer to the penguin paradise. Obviously, my trip hasn’t taken place, and because of the limit on visiting Snares Island, I doubt it ever will. For months, though, my world surrounds what would have been my favorite place. And while my ten-year plan slowly disappeared, and those hard-earned dimes were spent on other things, the memory of Snares Island stays with me. Other girls may have outgrown their princess, cowgirl, or president phases ,but I refuse to outgrow my penguin because, maybe, just maybe, the world is still in my grasp, goals can be achieved, and after all, someone’s got to see those penguins!

We live in a dangerous world. The figures for crime go up year by year. If you were attacked in the street, would you be able to defend yourself? Not very well probably, especially if someone was pointing a gun at you. We all see a lot of violence of films, but recently some programs on television showed how people can defend themselves without guns. For example, in one film a woman was attacked from behind. She threw the man, who was heavier and stronger than she was, over her head. Then she held him tightly on the ground. How? She knew Judo.
Jiu-jitsu, as judo is sometimes called, means "muscle science" in Japanese. The student of judo needs to learn a lot about the body, its bones and muscles. Judo uses a number of "falls", "holds" and "throws". Someone who does not know judo cannot defend himself against them. If you know judo you can defend yourself against a person who is stronger than you. You had better not practice judo on your friends unless they can fall without hurting themselves! Being strong is one thing, but using the body wisely is another. In judo, you use the other person's body to help you. You "throw" him to the ground and "hold" him there, so that he cannot move. Of course, it takes time and practice, but knowing judo is useful. In a violent world you ought to be able to defend yourself.

A 37-year-old man in Australia’s Northern city Darwin ,Norm Pethrick, was praised for jumping onto a crocodile’s back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported.
Ms Pethrick was standing on a river bank Wednesday afternoon when the saltwater crocodile lunged (扑), locking its jaws on both her legs as it tried to drag her underwater. Norm Pethrick, who with his wife had been collecting water, immediately went to help her. He jumped onto the back, poked (戳) the eyes of the crocodile and finally got his wife free. Ms Pethrick was later taken to Hospital for a medical treatment. The doctors said she was suffering eight puncture wounds (伤口) in her right leg, a puncture wound in her left leg and a serious cut to one of her fingers.
“This could have been a fatal and tragic situation,” said Dr Len Notaras, according to a local report. He said Ms Pethrick was saved by her husband’s “quick and diligent actions”. Dr Notaras also said she would remain in hospital for three more days and have an operation to clean the wounds, which are easy to get infected because of bacteria (细菌) on the teeth of the crocodile.
