Choosing the right job is probably one of the most important decisions we have to make in life, and it is frequently one of the hardest decisions we have to make. One important question that you might ask yourself is: “How do I get a good job?”__1__.

There are people who can answer an insignificant(无关紧要的) advertisement in the local paper and land the best job in the world; others write to all sorts of places all over the country, and never seem to get a reply at all. Still others believe that the in person, doortodoor approach is by far the best way to get a job; and then there are those who, through no active decision of their own, just seem to be in the right place at the right time. __2__. He used to spend a lot of his free time down by the sea watching the tall ships, but never thinking that he might one day sail one of them. His father was a farmer, and being a sailor could never be anything for the boy but an idle dream. One day, on his usual wandering, he heard the captain of the ship complaining that he could not sail because one member of his crew was sick. Without stopping to think, the lad(少年)offered to take his place. __3__.

__4__. If the lad had gone home to ponder(考虑)his decision for a week, he may have missed his chance. It is one thing to be offered an opportunity; it is another thing to take it and use it well.

Sometimes we hear stories about people who break all the rules and still seem to land plum jobs(美差). When you go for a job interview or fill out an application, you are expected to say nice things about the company to which you are applying. __5__. And within a year this person had become general manger of the company.

A.This story also illustrates the importance of seizing an opportunity when it presents itself.

B.People find jobs in an infinite number of ways.

C.It’s almost impossible to find a good job by answering advertisement in newspapers

D.Take for example the young man who wanted to be a sailor.

E.But there was one person who landed an excellent job by telling the interviewer all the company's faults.

F.He spent the rest of his life happily sailing the ships he had always loved.

G.It is very important to seize an opportunity when it presents itself.

第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Usually, when your teacher asks a question, there is only one correct answer. But there is one question that has millions of current answers. That question is “What’s your name?” Everyone gives a different answer, but everyone is correct.

Have you ever wondered about people’s names? Where do they come from? What do they mean?

People’s first names, or given names, are chosen by their parents. Sometimes the name of a grandparent or other member of the family is used. Some parents choose the name of a well-known person. A boy could be named George Washington Smith; a girl could be named Helen Keller Jones.

Some people give their children names that mean good things. Clara means “bright”; Beatrice means “one who gives happiness”; Donald means “world ruler”; Leonard means “as brave as a lion”.

The earliest last names, or surnames, were taken from place names. A family with the name Brook or Brooks probably lived near brook(小溪);someone who was called Longstreet probably lived on a long, paved road. The Greenwood family lived in or near a leafy forest.

Other early surnames came from people’s occupations. The most common occupational name is Smith, which means a person who makes things with iron or other metals. In the past, smiths were very important workers in every town and village. Some other occupational names are: Carter — a person who owned or drove a cart; Potter  —a person who made pots and pans.

The ancestors of the Baker family probably baked bread for their neighbors in their native village. The Carpenter’s great-great-great-grandfather probably built houses and furniture.

Sometimes people were known for the color of their hair or skin, or their size, or their special abilities. When there were two men who were named John in the same village, the John with the gray hair probably became John Gray. Or the John was very tall could call himself John Tallman. John Fish was probably an excellent swimmer and John Lightfoot was probably a fast runner or a good dancer.

Some family names were made by adding something to the father’s name. English-speaking people added –s or –son. The Johnsons are descendants of John; the Roberts family’s ancestor was Robert. Irish and Scottish people added Mac or Mc or O. Perhaps all of the MacDonnells and the McDonnells and the O’Donnells are descendants of the same Donnell.

1. Which of the following aspects do the surnames in the passage NOT cover?

A. Places where people lived.      B. People’s characters.

C. Talents that people possessed.   D. People’s occupations.

2. According to the passage, the ancestors of the Potter family most probably _______.

A. owned or drove a cart          B. made things with metals

C. made kitchen tools or contains   D. built houses and furniture

3. Suppose and English couple whose ancestors lived near a leafy forest wanted their new-born son to become a world leader, the baby might be named _______.

A. Beatrice Smith          B. Leonard Carter

C. George Longstreet       D. Donald Greenwood

4. The underlined word “descendants” in the last paragraph means a person’s _____

A. later generations          B. friends and relatives

C. colleagues and partners     D. later sponsors

Blind from birth, I have never had the opportunity to see myself and have been completely dependent on the image I create in the eyes of others.
There are those who   36   that since I can’t see, I obviously also cannot   37 . Very often people will talk with me at the top of their lungs. Conversely to this, people will also often   38 , assuming that since my eyes don’t work, my ears don’t either. For example, when I go to the airport and ask the ticket agent for   39 to the plane, he or she will always pick up the phone and call a ground hostess in a very low voice. "Hi, Jane, wave got a 76 here." I have concluded that the word "  40 " is not used because they are unwilling to inform me of my condition of which I may not have been previously   41 .
On the other hand, others know that of course I can hear, but believe that I can’t talk. Once I became ill and was hospitalized. Immediately after I was    42 , I was wheeled down to the X-ray room. Just at the door sat an elderly woman(judging from  her voice) asked the orderly(护工) who had been wheeling me:" What is your name?" “What’s your name?” the orderly   43  to me. "Harold Krents", I replied. "Harold Krents", he repeated. "When was he born?" "When were you born?"…This continued for about five minutes before I finally interrupted, "Look, this is absolutely  44  . OK, I can’t see, but it’s go to become pretty  45  to both of you that I don’t need an interpreter(翻译)." “He says he doesn’t  need an interpreter," the orderly reported to the woman.
The   46  misconception of all is the view that because I cant see, I can’t  47 . I was turned down by over forty law firms,   48  my qualifications included a cum laude degree from Harvard Law School. The  49 to find jobs, the continuous   50 of being told that it was impossible for a blind person to   51 law, the rejection letter, not based on my lack of   52  but rather on my disability, will always remain one of the most upsetting experiences of my life.
53 , the Department of Labor issued laws that demand equal  54 opportunities for the disabled. The business community’s response has been   55 . The attitude towards the disabled is beginning to change.

Childish Voice

When I was a young child, my parents often told me that it was time to teach a man everything. I didn’t understand and wondered why   36   had such a big influence   37   a person. There are so many things around us that    45    our will. We can’t force life    46    our wishes. The earth won’t stop turning no matter whether we   47   it or not. What we can do is just to make ourselves  48   the world. I think we should learn to accept   49   life gives us, no matter whether it’s the spring sunlight or the winter snowfall, and try to be happy.

Deeply moved by the pop song Grandmother (by Jay Chou), I always try to  50   every pleasant thing in my life, but now I see I don’t catch most of the pleasant moments. It is more   51   that they slip by and leave you feeling   52   . I realize that I’m not just living   53   myself and that there are the others around me I should think of .They all pay attention to my growing up, even if it’s just a little progress.

Everyone has his or her own attitude towards life, be it positive or   54   .It doesn’t matter, I think. There is one   55   that should be obeyed—and that’s to make this world better.
