Something interesting happened during the last Christmas shopping hour in London. A poor man, through no fault of his own, found himself locked in a big store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with people buying presents and the assistants were dead beat and wanted to go home. It seemed that all the necessary checks were made before the store was locked, and the assistants went home to enjoy the three-day holiday.

However that may be, the man was still in the store. When he realized that, he decided to made the best of it. In the store, of course, there was plenty of food, drink and bedding. There must have been radios and television sets, which no one could tell whether the man had ever used; When the store reopened, the man was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seemed to have been very happy. Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no reason why he should not do the same. Happily enough, he let the police take him away. Perhaps he had a better Christmas than usual. It was reported that the man would have to stay in prison for seven days. It seemed, however, the judge was not going to do anything for the store, as he said that the store had become better known through the story in the newspapers and on television.

These radio signals were heard first in 1967They were coming from a point in the sky where there were no known starsThey were coming very regularly tooonce in just about a secondIt was as if they were controlled by a clock

The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody elseThey were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened peopleThe signals were coming from a very small body—no biggerperhapsthan the earthWas that why no light could be seen from it? Or were the signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star?

There was no end to the questionsbut the scientists kept the discussion secret“Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there”they thought“little green men who are trying to send messages to other planetsor to us!” So the news was not given to the newspapersInsteadthe scientists studied the signals and searched for others like them

Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968Since then scientists have learned more about those strangeregular radio signalsAnd they have told the storyof courseThe signals do not come from a planetthey come from a new kind of star called “pulsar”About a hundred other pulsars have now been foundand most of them are very like the first one

1. How was the first pulsar discovered?

AScientists heard a new kind of radio signal

BScientists heard radio signals coming from an unknown star
