摘要: Which one of the following is NOT right according to this passage? A. Scientists think herbs roots can be used to cure disease. B. People believe dietary supplements contain vitamins and minerals. C. It is right that the dietary supplements are always safe. D. Dietary supplements are harmful to your health. D If you were walking around a supermarket and saw a woman with a shaved head, a ring through her nose, a tattoodesign on her arm and she has a small child in her shopping trolley, what would your opinion be? Do you think this kind of body decoration is attractive or ugly? Different people have different ideas. The following are some examples of body decoration from around the world. In many parts of Africa, it is thought that an attractive girl should have really shinny skin. On Bali, a little island in Indonesia, they believe that a beautiful woman or handsome man must have perfectly straight, flat teeth. The Balinese believe that teeth with pointed edges make you look like an ugly wild animal. So when a girl or boy becomes a teenager, he or she is taken to a special person in their village who will file off teeth points to make them smooth and flat. There is no anestheticand this tooth filing is really painful. It is a kind of test. If you can stand it without screaming or crying too much, then you are thought ready to become an adult. In Myanmar, there is a small group of people who are called the “Papaung . They believe that a woman can only be really beautiful if she has a long neck. I mean a VERY long neck. Now you might think that you are either born with a long or short neck and that there’s nothing whatever you can do about it. But you would be wrong! At around the age of 5, a Papaung girl has heavy metal rings fitted around her neck, tightly between the chin and shoulders. Each year more rings are added and very, very slowly their weight pushes the shoulders down, in this way making the neck look longer. A Papaung woman will wear her neck rings all her life, never once taking them off. So now I’m sure you will all agree that different people have different ideas about what is beautiful.

A   What Is A Hookworm Infection (感染)?

Hookworm is an infection of one of two different 7 to 13 mm long roundworms. Heavy infection with hookworm can create serious health problems for newborns, children, pregnant women, and persons who are malnourished. Approximately one-quarter of the world’s population is infected with hookworm.

B  Where are hookworms commonly found?

One of the most common species, Ancylostoma Duodenale, is found in southern Europe, northern Africa, northern Asia, and parts of South America. A second species, Necator Americanus, was widespread in the southeastern United States early in this century. The Rockefeller Sanitary Commission was founded in response, and hookworm infection has been largely controlled.

C  How do I get a hookworm infection?

You can become infected by direct contact with contaminated (污染的) soil, generally through walking barefoot, or accidentally swallowing contaminated soil.

Hookworms have a complex life cycle that begins and ends in the small intestine (肠道). Hookworm eggs require warm, moist, shaded soil to hatch into larvae (幼虫). These barely visible larvae enter the skin (often through bare feet), are carried to the lungs, go through the breathing tract to the mouth, are swallowed, and eventually reach the small intestine. This journey takes about a week. In the small intestine, the larvae develop into half-inch-long worms, attach themselves to the intestinal wall, and suck blood. The adult worms produce thousands of eggs. These eggs are passed in the human waste. If the eggs contaminate soil and conditions are right, they will hatch, molt, and develop into infective larvae again after 5 to 10 days.

D  Who is at risk?

People who have direct contact with soil that contains human feces (粪便) in areas where hookworm is common are at high risk of infection. Children—because they play in dirt and often go barefoot—are at high risk. Since transmission of hookworm infection requires development of the larvae in soil, hookworm cannot be spread person to person. Contact among children in institutional or child care settings should not increase the risk of infection.

E  _______________

In countries where hookworm is common and re-infection is likely, light infections are often not treated. In the United States, hookworm infections are generally treated for 1-3 days with medication prescribed (开药方) by your health care provider. The drugs are effective and appear to have few side effects. For children under the age of 2, the decision to treat should be made by their health care provider.

59. We can guess that the passage is intended for __________.

A. doctors                          B. scientists                 C. medical students       D. common readers

60. We can imply that the Rockefeller Sanitary Commission in the second paragraph is_______.

A. a centre for information about hookworm infection in the United States

B. an organization for preventing and treating the hookworm infection

C. an educational organization in the United States in the 1950s

D. an organization which identifies the hookworm all over the world

61. The best heading for Part E should be ________.

A. What are the symptoms of hookworm?

B. How can I prevent hookworm?

C. What should I do if I think I have a hookworm infection?

D. What is the treatment for hookworm?

62. Which of the following statements about the life cycle of hookworms is right according to the passage?

A. Hookworm eggs develop into hookworm larvae in the small intestine.

B. Hookworm larvae feed on human’s blood in the intestine walls.

C. Hookworm eggs will become larvae in warm, moist, shaded soil.

D. Hookworm larvae will become hookworm eggs in human waste.

Most musicians agree that the best violins were made in Cremona, Italy, about 200 years ago. They even sound better than violins made today. Violin makers and scientists try to make instruments like the old Italian violins. But they aren’t the same. Why are these old Italian violins so special? Many people think they have an answer.

Some people think it is the age of the violins. But there is a problem here. Not all old violins sound wonderful. Only those from Cremona are special. So age cannot be the answer.

Other people think the secret to those violins is the wood. The wood of the violin is very important. It must be from certain kinds of trees. It must not be too young or too old. Perhaps the violin makers of Cremona knew something special about wood for violins.

But the kind of wood may not be so important. It may be more important to cut the wood in a special way. Wood for a violin must be cut very carefully. It has to be the right size and shape. The smallest difference will change the sound of the violin. Musicians sometimes think that this is the secret of the Italians.

Size and shape may not be the answer either. Scientists make new violins that are exactly the same size and shape. But the new violins still do not sound as good as the old one. Some scientists think the secret may be the varnish(清漆), which covers the wood of the violin and makes it look shiny. It also helps the sound of the instrument. Since no one knows what the Italian violin makers used in their varnish, no one can make the same varnish today.

There may never be other violins like the violins of Cremona. And there are not many of the old violins left. So these old violins are becoming more and more precious.
