What looks like a black hole, behaves like a black hole, but is bigger than a black hole? Two
black holes! Astronomers last week discovered a pair of enormous black holes far out in the galaxy
that appear to be dancing toward each other. However, astronomers say the collision is not likely
to occur for several million years.
Black holes are objects in outer space that are so dense that nothing can escape their gravity.
They often sit in the center of a galaxy - like the Milky Way - and suck up everything near them.
The gravitational pull of a black hole is so intense that not even light (Which travels faster than
anything else in space) can make it past without being swallowed.
Black holes, like the one at the center of the Milky Way, are enormous. Scientists call some
of them "supermassive", because they can be a few million times the size of most stars. Their size,
their mass, and their inescapable gravity make black holes a giant force of nature in outer space.
Because there is no light near black holes, astronomers cannot actually see them; they are
completely invisible to us on the Earth. Scientists manage to detect the existence of a black hole
by watching what happens to other objects, or matter floating in space.
So how did scientists manage to get a good look at a region so faraway? The team used an
orbiting NASA observatory known as Chandra. This special observatory uses X-rays rather than
light to watch far out into space. Right before a star gets sucked into a black hole, it produces a large
number of X-rays.
1. Which of the following statements CANNOT be used to describe a black hole?
A. It is an object in space that can be seen on the Earth.
B. It has extremely strong gravity.
C. It can suck up everything near them.
D. It is an enormous object in the galaxy.
2. Why did the astronomers need to use Chandra?
A. Because Chandra can throw light on black holes.
B. Because Chandra can help them see black holes in X-rays.
C. Because Chandra was sucked into the black hole.
D. Because Chandra can resist the gravitational pull of a black hole.
3. Which of the following is NOT discussed in the passage?
A. Why black holes get an immense force of nature.
B. How stars react when sucked into a black hole.
C. Black holes' swallowing up many nearby stars.
D. How black holes come into existence.
4. Which is the latest space discovery about black holes?
A. Two black holes appear to be advancing toward each other.
B. The location of black holes in the galaxy.
C. New clues about the beginning of the universe.
D. Nothing near a black hole can escape without being swallowed.

Drug Use Report

A new study examines drug use by young people in t he United States. The study found that cigarette smoking among American teenagers dropped during t he past years. The drop continues a general decrease in teenager smoking rates that started in 1996.

American health officials praised the decrease as good news in the nation’s battle against smoking. They note that smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease.Smoking rates among American teenagers increased in the first half of the 1990’s.However, teenage smoking rates have been decreasing in recent years.

The University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research supervised the latest study. The Department of Health and Human Services reported the findings.

The study involved more than forty-four-thousand students in more than four-hundred schools across the United States. They were asked about past and daily use of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs.

The youngest students questioned were thirteen years old.The study also involved fifteen-year-old students and seventeen-year-olds.

The most notable change in the study was a continuation of the decrease in cigarette use among thirteen and fifteen-year-olds.For example, about twelve percent of thirteen-year-old students questioned reported smoking at least one cigarette during the past month.Six years ago, the rate was twenty-one percent.Among fifteen-year-olds, the rate dropped from thirty percent in 1996 to twenty-one percent last year.

Tommy Thompson is the secretary of Health and Human Services. He praised the findings. He said more teenagers are making correct choices that will help them avoid health problems caused by tobacco.

The study found that use of alcoholic drinks and illegal drugs among American teenagers remained the same or dropped during the past year. However, the use of one illegal drug known as Ecstasy continued to increase.Yet the rate of increase was not as great as in recent years.

American health officials said they will continue to give teenagers scientific information about the serious health risks of Ecstasy and other illegal drugs. The goal is to further reduce the use of these drugs.

Maps and statistics can tell us a lot about where a country is headed.Take the US Census Bureau's latest findings on American cities. They show that for the first time since 1900, Detroit is not on the list of the Top 10 most populous US cities. In its place is San Jose, California.

Detroit has been the long-time centre of the US auto industry, but in the past few years the "Big Three" US automakers-General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler - have closed plants and laid off workers. With the factory closings and huge job losses, Detroit cannot collect enough tax revenue to pay its bills, forcing it to close schools and lay off city workers.Cutbacks then cause others to flee the city.

"It's part of a pattern for the heavily industrialized cities," says Dana Johnson, an economist in Detroit."There's been an ongoing dynamic(变化)here of people fleeing the city looking for better schools, better lifestyles, better services."

Detroit is hardly alone. After World War II, the US was the world's leading manufacturer.Cars, televisions, toys, and clothing made in America were exported around the world. As a result, the well-paid factory workers formed the backbone of a rising middle class. In the last three decades, the US economy has changed.Companies have moved factories overseas to take advantage of lower wages in Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.

Where are people who leave the northeast and midwest going? They are moving south and west, another broad trend. In general, people are moving to where it's warmer, less expensive and less crowded, or where jobs are more plentiful in growing service industries like health care, in the technology sector, or in factories that moved from the northeast or midwest.

In a sense, the computer chips of San Jose, the new 10th largest city, in the heart of what is known as Silicon Valley, have replaced the sheet metal and molten steel of Detroit as the symbol of American economic power.

(1)

The main difficulty that Detroit is now facing is ________.

[ ]

A.

the factory closings and huge job losses

B.

many people's moving to the south and west

C.

the poor quality of the automobile

D.

the lack of the computer chips

(2)

Which of the following isn't the trend of the change?

[ ]

A.

The decline of the manufacturing economy.

B.

Companies' moving overseas.

C.

The end of the US cities' development.

D.

The migration of Americans to the south and west.

(3)

Which of the following is not true about San Jose?

[ ]

A.

The newly-listed 10th largest city.

B.

The heart of Silicon Valley.

C.

The symbol of American economic power.

D.

The centre of the heavily industrialized cities.

(4)

Which statement is not correct according to the passage?

[ ]

A.

Detroit has been on the list of the Top 10 most populous US cities for over a century.

B.

People immigrate south and west to take advantage of lower wages there.

C.

The US was an important exporting country in the middle of the last century.

D.

The US economy now is not as prosperous as 30 years ago.

The rapid development in information technology is set to make the average home a virtual (实质上的) university campus. E-study (or online study), the latest trend in distance education, could leave university traditions such as attending lectures, classroom discussion stuck in the 20th university. As long as you can dial up the Internet and type in your code, you are able to study on line.

The University of Southern Queensland ( USQ) has been one of the leaders in this field, with up to 29 courses available (可得到的) for online study. It has progressively made studying certain subjects possible on the Internet in the past few years. The university started to offer its first complete full Internet courses last year.

Studying from interstate and around the world is now a reality. Carla Powell, 33, has worked full-time while pursuing her degree (获得学位) in Education Online through USQ. She likes the flexibility (灵活性) of online study. “It's exactly the same as studying on campus, except that there is not the pressure of having to go to classes which I hate.” Powell says. She says that she enjoys the close relationship with the professors on the online courses. “You just have to e-mail them, and they reply quickly. There are some student support groups available to us,” she says.

The major benefit of online study is the flexibility. Powell says she intends to travel overseas soon but as long as she can find an Internet café, all she has to do is to sit at a computer and complete assignments (布置的作业) on the other side of the world.

Online study is changing the focus of education towards the customers—students. “There is a revolution taking place; online education will greatly change the way education is looked at,” Professor Taylor says.

1.  The second sentence in the first paragraph most likely means “ ________”

A. university traditions will be fully replaced by e-study.

    B. e-study may signal the end of some university tradition.

    C. online study may win over traditional study in the end.

    D. traditional study belongs only to the 20th century.

2USQ is regarded as one of the leading institutes in online education because ________.

    A. it has made the earliest discoveries in Internet education

    B. people can pursue their degrees while working fulltime

    C. it offers Internet courses to applicants

    D. it is one of the pioneers (先锋) in the development of e-study

3Which of the following is not mentioned as the advantage of online study?

    A. People could set schedule (时间表) according to their need.

    B. Professors and students share closer relationship.

    C. There will be some support from student groups.

    D. There is no need to attend class regularly.

4According to the passage, online study could be flexibly carried out ______________.

    A. only in USQ

    B. only when you travel around

    C. after you get a job

    D. anytime and anywhere
