Dear son,
The day that you see me old, have patience and try to understand me.
If, when I speak to you, I repeat the same things thousand and one times, do not 36 me, listen to me. When you were 37 , I had to read to you thousand and one times the same story until you get to sleep.
When I do not want to have a 38 , neither shame me nor scold me. Remember when I had to 39 you with thousand excuses I invented 40 you wanted to take a bath.
When you see my 41 on new technologies, give me the necessary time and do not look 42 me with your mocking smile. I taught you 43 to do so many things —to eat well, to dress well, and to face life.
When 44 I lose the memory or the thread of our conversation , let me have the necessary time to remember ; and if I cannot do it , do not become nervous, 45 the most important thing is not my conversation but 46 to be with you and to have you listening to me .
47 I do not want to eat, do not force me. I know well when I need to and when not.
When my 48 legs do not allow me walk, give me your hand, the same way I 49 when you gave your first 50.
And when some day I say to you that I do not want to live any more, and that I want to die, do not get angry. Some day you will understand. Try to understand that my age is not lived but 51 . Some day you will discover that, 52 my mistakes, I always wanted the 53 thing for you and that I tried to prepare the way for you .You must not feel sad , angry or helpless for seeing me near you. You must be 54 to me , try to understand me and to help me as I did it when you started living . Help me to walk , help me to end my way with love and patience . I will 55 you by a smile and by the love I have had always for you .
I love you, son.

Help or Not
Dear editor,
During last year's winter holiday, I went shopping with my grandmother. We saw several beggars. Some of them were disabled, which made me feel sad. Among them were old people, young people and even children! When I wanted to help them, my grandmother stopped me. She told me they were not worth showing mercy to because some beggars cheated people out of their money. Should I help them?
Yours,
Mary from Guangzhou
Dear Mary,
While I understand your grandmother’s point of view, I think that just because some beggars have cheated people, this doesn’t mean you should never help any beggars.
Showing mercy to people who are not as fortunate as us is one of the kindest things we can do. While some beggars may use dishonest means to get money, most beggars will not. Even those who use dishonest means are probably hungry for food and feel they have no choice but to cheat people. It is important to be careful for your own safety. But if you want to help, you don’t necessarily have to give it to beggars in the street.
Another way you can help is by donating money to the China Charity Federation. Visit its website at: www. china charity. cn.net.

阅读下列短文,完成文后题目。
This morning I woke from a wonderful night's sleep. Not just a good night's sleep, but one of those completely satisfying sleeps - - extremely rare and difficult to explain, but if you've ever had one you know what I am talking about.
No amount of riches could buy a better night's sleep. As silly as that sounds, it was the first things that crossed my mind when I awoke. I truly appreciated my joyful rest. It was like a gift from the heaven. Interesting to think that Bill Gates or any other billionaire you can mention, really couldn't have had a more satisfying, fulfilling night of sleep. The best that money can't buy.
That started me thinking of other pleasures that cost nothing or very little and that are often taken for granted. Like a drink of cold water on a hot day when you're really thirsty. Or a warm relaxing bath when you're bone tired or mentally exhausted.
Remember your first real kiss-can you put a price on that? Or the companionship of a faithful and loving pet or the clean, fresh smell of mountain air? There's an old song,“The Best Things in Life Are Free.”
Did you ever eat a meal that not only filled your belly (肚子) and satisfied your taste, but refresh your soul? Ever spend a winter's evening in the company of good friends?
What could be better than listening to your favorite music or watching good movie? Or sharing the beauty of sunset with a loved one? These are quiet delights
small pleasures. I hope this doesn't sound too ridiculous (可笑的) in today's rough, loud world. I wonder if the new generation can appreciate some such things.
We're told we need the latest model car, or TV or computer to be happy, but it's all a cheat, a marketing move. It never lasts for long, either. No sooner do we get these things than we're looking to replace them with a newer car, or TV or computer.
This is not to say that…

2.The underlined word“that”in the 2nd paragraph probably refers to ________.
[ ]
A.dreams during the sleep
B.a satisfying night's sleep
C.Bill Gates and some other famous persons
D.the whole first paragraph
3.The best tile of the passage might be ________.
[ ]
A.Best Things Money Can't Buy
B.A Good Night's Sleep
C.Best Things In Life Are Free
D.Mental and Physical Pleasures in Life

[ ]
A.about many other physical pleasures in the daily life
B.why young generation can't appreciate the small quiet pleasures
C.what is the proper time to buy the new car, TV or computer.
D.money also plays an important part in our everyday life
