Up to half of all the food produced in the world—two billion tons(吨)of it—is tossed away, according to a new report.

The waste is caused by poor storage equipment in the developing world, “buying-one-get-one-free” offers, and critical(挑剔的)consumers in the developed world, the report said.

One of the worst offenders is Britain, where as many misshapen(畸形的) and supermarkets will not sell them. The report also suggests that half of the food that is bought in Europe and the United States is thrown away by consumers.

Dr. Tim Fox, head of energy and environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said,” The amount of food wasted and lost around the world is amazing. This is food that could be used to feed the world’s growing population. It is also an unnecessary waste of the land, water and energy resources that are used in the production, processing and distribution of this food. The reasons for this situation range from poor engineering and agricultural practices, lack of good transport and their encouraging consumers to overbuy through buy-one-get-one-free offers.”

The report also found that 550 billion cubic meters of water is wasted globally in growing crops that are never eaten. The report said the demand for water production could reach between 10 trillion(万吨) and 13 trillion cubic meters a year by 2050.

Fox said, “The UN predicts that the global population will swell to 9.5 billion by 2075, meaning there will be three billion more people to feed. As water, land and energy resources come under increasing pressure from competing human demands, engineers have a key role to play in preventing food loss and waste by coming up with more efficient ways of growing, transporting and storing foods. But in order for this to happen, governments, development agencies and organizations like the UK must work together to help change people’s attitudes towards waste and discourage wasteful practices by famers, food producers, supermarkets and consumers.”

63. The underlined phrase” tossed away” in paragraph 1 can be replaced by___.

A. thrown away    B. given away   C. put away   D. take away

64. What is the main factor that causes the waste of food in the United States?

A. Supermarkets’ bad environment.  B. Poor storage equipment.

C. Critical consumers themselves.     D. Lack of good transport.

65. How should engineers help prevent the waste of food?

A. They should teach people how to make full use of land.

B. They should change people’s attitudes towards food.

C. They should stop farmers and consumers from wasteful practices.

D. They should develop better ways of growing, transporting and storing food.

66. The passage is mainly intended to____?

A. To call on people to save food.

B. To criticize people for wasting food.

C. To attract readers’ attention to wasting food.

D. To report the problem of waste food.

Growing up together in Twin Falls, Idaho, Lisa Fry and Paula Turner never doubted their friendship would last forever. But after Fry married, moved to New York City and had a baby, her letters to Turner suddenly went unanswered. "Do you think I've somehow offended her?" Fry asked her husband.

Turner, meanwhile, had thought she was no longer important to Fry. "She's got a family now," she told herself. "We're just too different to be close like before."

Finally, Fry picked up the courage to call her old friend. At first, the conversation was awkward, yet soon they both admitted that they missed each other. A month later, they got together, laughing and sharing confidences.

"Thank goodness I finally took action," Fry says. "We both realized we were as important to each other as ever."

There are good reasons to value our friendships. Once a public-opinion research firm, Roper Starch Worldwide, asked 2007 people to identify one or two things that said the most about themselves. Friends far outranked(高于)homes, jobs, clothes and cars.

“A stable friendship carries a long history of experience and interaction and keeps us connected,” says Donald Pannen, executive officer of the Western Psychological Association. "It is what we should protect." However, says Brant R. Burleson, professor of communication at Purdue University, "The better friends you are, the more likely you'll face conflicts." And even the result can be what you don't want--an end to the relationship.

The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended. Here's what experts suggest:

◆Swallow your pride.

◆Apologize when you're wrong--even if you've also been wronged.

◆See things from your friend's point of view.

◆Accept that friendships change.

Making friends can sometimes seem easy, says Yager. The hard part is keeping the connections strong and long. Her suggestion: Consider friendship an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and develop.

Growing up in the USA, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was her. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票经纪人). I said in a young voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs. Tan.”

And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me cheek already two week lone.”

And then, in perfect English I said: “I’m getting rather concerned .You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.”

Then she talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”

The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.

When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue.    CHICAGO ---Call it a reward, or just “bribery(贿赂)”.

Whichever it is, many parents today readily admit to buying off their children, who get goodies(好东西) for anything from behaving in a restaurant to sleeping all night in their own beds.

   That’s what worries parenting experts.

“I think that reward systems have a time and a place and work really well in certain situations,” says Marcy Safyer, director of the Adelphi University Institute for Parenting.

“But what often gets lost for people is being able to figure out how to communicate to their kids that doing the thing is rewarding enough,” Safyer says.

Parents and experts alike agree that the dynamic(动力) is partly a reflection of the world we live in. It’s unrealistic to think a parent wouldn’t reward their children with material things sometimes, says Robin Lanzi, a clinical psychologist and mother of four who’s the research director at the Center on Health and Education at Georgetown University.

“But you want to make sure that they match the behavior, so it’s not something huge for something small,” Lanzi says.

She recalls hearing about a father who offered his child a Nintendo Wii game system for scoring a couple goals in a soccer game.

Elizabeth Powell, a mother of two young daughters in Austin, Texas, knows what she means.

“You want to raise them in a way that they’re respectful and appreciate things,” Powell says of her children. “But sometimes, you wonder now if kids appreciate even a new pair of shoes. ”

Parenting experts are worried that ____ .

       A. today’s children are fed up with material things

      B. parents are rewarding their kids improperly

      C. today’s children are more and more demanding(苛求的)

      D. there is lack of communication between parents and children

What Safyer says suggests that ____ .

      A. reward systems are quite limited in developing abilities

      B. reward systems work well regardless of(不管) time and place

      C. reward systems are still not made full use of to develop abilities

      D. reward systems are often used at the wrong time and place

What can we learn from what Robin Lanzi says?

      A. She holds a different opinion from other parenting experts.

      B. She thinks children can’t behave well without being rewarded.

      C. She holds a similar belief to Safyer and gives further explanation.

      D. She doesn’t believe in rewarding children for good behavior.

The father who offered his child a Nintendo Wii game system can be regarded as

   _____.

       A. over-rewarding his child

       B. giving his child proper reward

       C. respecting and appreciating his child

       D. giving something small for something huge
