Alice Walker makes her living by writing, and her poems, short stories, and novels have won many awards and fellowships for her. She was born in Eatonton, Georgia. She went to public schools there, and then to Spelman college in Atlanta before coming to New York to attend Sarah Lawrence college, from which she graduated in 1966. For a time she lived in Jackson, Mississippi, with her lawyer husband and a small daughter. About Langston Hughes, American Poet, here first book for children, she says, “After my first meeting with Langston Hughes I vowed I would write a book about him for children someday. Why? Because I, at 22, knew next to nothing of his work , and he didn’t scold me; he just gave me a stack of his books. And he was kind to me; I will always be grateful that in his absolute warmth and generosity he fulfilled my deepest dream ( and need) of what a poet should be.?”
“To me he is not dead at all. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t think of him or speak of him. Once, just before he died, when he was sick with the flu, I took him a sack full of oranges. The joy I felt in giving that simple gift is undiminished by time. He said he liked oranges, too.”

Are you the type of person who always says“yes”?I’ve come to learn that it is very im-portant to learn to say NO!It’s okay. People are still going to like you. They may even respect you more because they know you are honest.
I,m not saying to say“no" to someone who really needs your help. I’m talking about re-fusing that meeting that you really do not want to attend or that birthday party that you don’t want to be a guest at.
Think for a moment how you feel when you say YES to something that you really don’t want to do. If you’re like I once was,you can’t sleep at night and you think about it too much. It weighs on your mind. You try to find ways out. Whatever you’re saying to yourself,if you really wanted to go,you wouldn’t have all of these thoughts.
So,why not just say NO from the beginning? Maybe you feel like if you don’t show up at the meeting(by the way,it is not one you must attend) your boss isn’t going to like you or your co-workers won’t respect you. Maybe you feel as if your mom,dad or sisters won’t love you as much if you don’t do everything for them that they ask every occasion.
If these people are your true friends, family members,or a good boss, they will like or love you the same no matter what. People treat you the way you teach them to,and if you’re some-one who always says“yes" then that’s what they,re expecting.
You need to do what is right for you. Of course we do have real obligations in life to ful-fill,but we do not have to do everything others want us to do.
【小题1】Which of the following statements would the writer agree with?

A.We should try to do what our friends ask us to do.

D.Always saying“no" means you are brave.
【小题2】What does the underlined word,’ It" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Saying "yes".
B.A friend's birthday party.
C.Something you’re unwilling to do.
D.Something you think difficult to do.
【小题3】The writer believes that if you say“no" to your family members,you’11_·
A.have the same relationship with them as before
B.have a loose relationship with them
C.disappoint them
D.upset them
【小题4】What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Learn to Make a Right Choice B.To Be Yourself

Americans Spend Their Free Time In Various Ways
America is a country of sports—of hunting, fishing and swimming, and of team sports like baseball and football.Millions of Americans watch their favorite sports on television. They also like to play in community orchestras(管弦乐队),make their own films or recordings,go camping, visit museums, attend lectures, travel, garden, read, and join in hundreds of other activities. The people also enjoy building things for their homes, sewing their own clothes, even making their own photographs. They do these things for fun as well as for economy.
But as much as Americans enjoy their free time, the country is at the same time a“self-improvement” country.More than 25 million adults continue their education, chiefly by going to school in the evening, during their own free time,at their own expense.Added to the time spent on personal activities,Americans a1so devote a great amount of their time to the varied needs of their communities. Many hospitals, schools, libraries, museums, parks, community centers, and organizations that assist the poor depend on the many hours citizens devote to these activities, often without any pay. Why do they do it?
There are several answers. The idea of cooperating and sharing responsibility with one another for the benefit of all is as old as the country itself.
When the country was first founded in 1776,it was necessary for the settlers to work together to live. They had crossed dangerous seas and risked all they had in their struggle for political and religious freedom. There remains among many Americans a distrust of central government.People still prefer to do things themselves within their communities, rather than give the government more control.
Sometimes people offer their time because they wish to accomplish something for which no money is paid,to do something that will be of benefit to the entire community. It is true that some people use their leisure because they are truly interested in the work;or they are learning from the experience.
No matter what the reason is,hundreds of thousands of so-called leisure hours are put into hard, unpaid work on one or another community need.

In the early part of the twentieth century, racism was widespread in the United States. Many African Americans were not given equal opportunities in education or employment. Marian Anderson (1897-1993) was an African American woman who gained fame as a concert singer in this climate of racism. She was born in Philadelphia and sang in church choirs during her childhood. When she applied for admission to a local music school in 1917, she was turned down because she was black. Unable to attend music school, she began her career as a singer for church gatherings. In 1929, she went to Europe to study voice and spent several years performing there. Her voice was widely praised throughout Europe. Then she returned to the US in 1935 and became a top concert singer after performing at Town Hall in New York City.
Racism again affected Anderson in 1939. When it was arranged for her to sing at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC, the Daughters of the American Revolution opposed it because of her color. She sang instead at the Lincoln Memorial for over 75 000 people. In 1955, Anderson became the first black soloist to sing win the Metropolitan Opera of New York City. The famous conductor Toscanini praised her voice as “heard only once in a hundred years”. She was a US delegate to the United Nations in 1958 and won the UN peace prize in 1977.
