The first time that I had heard the term“EQ”was in the fall of 1995 when the book Emotional Intelligence,by Daniel Goleman, was widely covered by the American press. The widespread research presented in the book supported my own observations and doubts about life and emotions, and told me that I was on the right track to go after happiness. The research continues to confirm what I had concluded on my own:These feelings are extremely important to individual health, happiness, and social harmony. This might seem a bit obvious, but it was not always obvious to me.

I grew up in a family where we didn't talk about feelings. We talked about ideas, concepts and principles. As a result,I could tell you what I thought about everything, but I couldn't tell you how I felt about anything. After several failed relationships,I took time off to reflect on my life and realized I had made many decisions which resulted in unhappiness for myself and others. After studying the literature on emotions and feelings,I concluded that most of my poor decisions could be directly due to what is now called low emotional intelligence,or low EQ,for short.Previously,I struggled to find happiness through the traditional routes-material success. Now,however,I realize that:

There's not much point having either wealth or relationships if you aren't happy.

It is hard to be happy with others if you aren't happy yourself.

It is hard to be happy alone if you don't feel good about yourself,i.e.have high self-esteem and self-confidence.

It is hard to have good feelings about yourself if you don't have good emotional management skills.

Emotional management skills, the main subject of EQ,are, therefore, one of the most basic elements of happiness.

Researchers study television to understand its effects on viewers and to measure its effectiveness in selling products.Much of the research on TV audiences is market research, paid for by companies with something to sell.Let me repeat; research on television is supported largely by advertisers.

The television industry depends on advertising money to run, and this relationship influences what television offers viewers.Advertisers aim to reach mass audiences and particular social groups. In turn, the television tries to meet the needs of advertisers, because pleasing the advertisers is nearly as important as pleasing the pubic. This means advertisers have a lot of control over what programs are made and when they are shown.

Television is the most effective marketing tool ever created. Many advertisement apply basic psychology(心理学)by sort of turning to our insecurities and desires.Ads convince us that the things we once thought were luxuries(奢侈)are now necessities.Television is highly programs as well.Using expert market research, programmers and advertisers sort of paint a picture of life centered on material possessions. This kind of life may look attractive and desirable, but it’s all at the expense of personal relationships.

As you probably can tell, I prefer to agree with critics(评论家)of the media.Advertising does create false needs, and products we really need don’t require advertising.Television advances consumerism(消费至上).It shows us things, things, and more things. It encourages treed and envy.Television helps create a wasteful society, where things are thrown out long before they are worn out.

I was off to go back to work one evening when I saw my two children were busy sewing things on the sewing machine. My 11yearold daughter was, in the midst of her project, going to assist her elder brother
in making a little cushion. I left, and after a few hours returned to find a mess in the kitchen and in the front room, and both children sitting in front of the television.
Having had a long day, I was too tired to greet them and then I noticed the material my daughter had
used. It had been purchased to make a colorcoordinated (颜色协调的) baby blanket, and now had
chunks (块) cut out of almost every piece of fabric. Not stopping to listen, I exploded at the children and
explained how angry I was at what had been done.
My daughter listened to me sheepishly, not trying to defend herself at all, but the pain could be seen
written across her face. She retreated to her room, and spent some time there alone before she came out
to say good night and once again apologized for the mistake she had made.
A few hours later, as I was preparing to go to bed, I found that there on my bed lay a beautiful, little
cushion made out of the forbidden fabric, with the words "I LOVE MOM". Alongside it was a note
apologizing again, and the innocence in which she had taken the fabric.
To this day, I still get tears in my eyes when I think of how I reacted and still feel the pain of my
actions. It was I who then went to her and apologized for my actions. I display with great pride the
cushion on my bed, and constantly use it to remind me that nothing in this world is greater than a child's
love.

1. The underlined word can be replaced by "________".
A. hopefully came up
B. hopefully went back
C. quietly came up

A. They cut out the material and made it into a baby blanket.
B. They cut the material into pieces and used them to clean the TV set.
C. They cut the material into pieces on which they wrote apologizing words.
D. They made a cushion with the material to show their love for Mom.

3. What can be inferred from the text?
A. The two children are good at sewing.
B. The two children are introverted (内向的).
C. The mother is often rude to her children.
D. The mother is regretful for what she did.

4. The passage is mainly to tell about________.

My eighth grade consisted of 28 classmates. We knew each other so well that most of us could distinguish each other's handwriting at a glance. Although we grew up together, we still had class outcasts. From second grade on, a small group started harassing (骚扰) two or three of the others.I was one of those two or three, though I didn't know why.In most cases when children get picked on, they aren't good at sports or they read too much or they wear the wrong clothes or they are of a different race. But in my class, we all read too much and didn't know how to play sports. We had also been brought up to carefully respect each other's race. This is what was so strange about my situation.Usually, people are made outcasts because they are in some way different from the larger group. But in my class, large differences did not exist. It was as if the outcasts were invented by the group out of a need for them.

The harassment came in the form of laughter when I talked, and rolled eyes when I turned around. If I was out on the playground and approached a group of people, they often fell silent.Sometimes, someone would not see me coming and I would catch the tail end of a joke at my expense.

There was another girl in our class who was perhaps even more rejected than I.She provided the group with a lot of material for jokes. One day one popular girl came up to me to show me something she said I wouldn't want to miss.We walked to a comer of the playground.Three or four girls there were reading aloud from a small book, which I was told was the girl's diary.

I sat down and, laughing till my sides hurt, heard my voice finally mixed with the others.Often being accepted by others is more satisfying than being accepted by oneself, even though the satisfaction does not last.Looking back, I wonder how I could have participated in making fun of this girl when I knew perfectly well how it felt.If I were in that situation today I would react differently, but I can't honestly be sure.

1.The author was made an outcast because ____.

A.she couldn't play sports as well as others

B.her classmates needed to find an outcast her

C.her classmates found her clothes funny

D.family belonged to a minority group

2.How was the author treated as an outcast?

A.She was refused to approach others.

B.No one responded to her talking.

C.She was often the target of teasing.

A.She showed great sympathy with the girl.

B.She found more materials about the girl for jokes.

C.She stopped the others from hurting the girl.

D.She joined others in making fun of the girl.

D.One should pay somebody back in his own way.
