The society today is in a state of changing. Everywhere ways of doing things are changing and the
items that we use on a daily basis are also changing. This change has also come to the clothing business.
Most people are not aware that organic clothing production is now a billion-dollar industry. Many of us
probably don't even know what organic clothing is.
Organic clothing is the material that is made and grown in accordance with organic standards. This
means that in the process of growing the material no harm is done to the air, water and the earth itself.
These materials are not harmful to the earth's natural ecological system and meet the standards of what is
well known today as "going green". Another fact that most people are not aware of is that the clothing
industry adds more pollution to the natural environment than most other industries.
Cotton is one material where pesticides are used a lot because the crops are always being attacked
by various insects and bugs. On the contrary, organically grown cotton does not use any of these harmful
pesticides and nor do they add any other chemicals to the natural cotton.
Organic clothing is catching on but you may not find it in your local department stores. However, you
would be more likely to find a better variety by going online. Organic clothing may be a bit more
expensive than ordinary clothing. Cotton is not the only material that is grown organically, although it is
very popular.    Other materials include hemp, bamboo and wool. Just as with organically grown cotton,
there are no pesticides or chemicals used in the growing process of these materials. Most people say that
clothing made from organic cotton has a smoother feel and is softer and gentler on the skin.

3. The underlined phrase  "catching on " in the fourth paragraph means ________.
A. getting started
B. becoming cheaper
C. getting improved
D. becoming popular
4. What is the best title for the passage ?
A. Changes in Organic Clothing.

San Francisco is going to do what many other cities have already done --- provide free bicycles to the public. The mayor of San Francisco supports the bicycle program. He wants to improve the terrible traffic problems in the city.

At first, 40 to 60 bikes will be available only to city workers. People will give their old bikes to the city to use in the program. If this program is successful, one day more than 1000 bicycles will be available. Everyone, not just city workers, will be able to use these bicycles.

People in Fresno, California already have a free bicycle program. In fact, this idea began in Amsterdam over 40 years ago. These programs encourage citizens to get out of their cars and onto pollution-free bikes.

Fresno’s Yellow Bike Program puts about fast bicycles around the city. The bikes are painted bright yellow so people know they can take them. When people take a yellow bike, they can ride to work or to shopping areas, and then leave the bike for the next rider.

Some people worry that the free bikes will be stolen. However, theft hasn’t been a problem in other free-bike cities.

While most people think the bike program is a good idea, only a few say they will use it. “I will still drive my car,” says Joanna Greene. “San Francisco has a lot of hills. My office is at the top of Potrero Hill. I don’t think I’m in good shape. And, wouldn’t I have to carry a helmet with me all the time?”

Phil Chung agrees, “There is too much traffic. Riding a bicycle can be dangerous. There are not very many bike lanes(自行车道).” He continues, “Plus, it’s too cold in the winter. And what if you ride a bike to work, and then there isn’t one to ride home?”

Program leaders know there will be problems. But they think it’s worth trying. “It’s not the solution for everyone,” states Sylvia Pass. “But if just one hundred people use it every day, that’s one hundred cars that aren’t on the streets, one hundred parking spaces that aren’t used. I think it’s a great beginning.”

Soaring divorce rates around the globe are taking a toll on the environment, American researchers suggested in a study released on a Monday.

Michigan State University researcher Jianguo “Jack” Liu and his assistant Eunice Yu said the increasing number of divorces leads to more households with fewer people and greater consumption of water and energy. They said housing units require space, construction materials and fuel to heat and cool, regardless of the number of inhabitants.

For example, in the United States in 2005, divorced households consumed an extra 73 billion kilowatt hours of electricity and 627 billion gallons of water. An additional 38 million extra rooms required heating and lighting that same year due to divorced households.

That costs $6.9 billion in extra utility costs per year, Liu said, plus an added $ 3.6 billion for water, in addition to other costs such as land use.

“A married household actually uses resources more efficiently than a divorced household,” Liu said. He said that in cohabitating(同居) household, people will watch the same television, share the air conditioning and heat and use the same refrigerator. All things use energy at a regularly stable rate, regardless of the number of users.

Liu said he was not condemning divorce, “Some people really need to get divorced.” He said cohabitation—whether by a family or friends—was simply a more environmentally friendly option. Additonally, the researchers noted that trends other than divorce are also changing family living structures, such as the end of multiple generations of a family sharing a home and people remaining single longer.

“People’s first reaction to this research is surprise, and then it seems simple.” Liu said in a press release. “But a lot of things become simple after research is done. Our challenges were to connect the dots and quantify(量化) their relationships. People have been talking about how to protect the environment and fight against climate change, but divorce is a factor that people don’t notice and it needs to be considered”.

He said the increasing energy demands caused by divorce should be considered by governments when they are creating environmental policies.

The research was published in this week’s online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

  A. divorced households will use fewer resources than married households
