I got lots of interesting experiences in a free school. At first I couldn’t believe it. There were no    41    in rows or loud-sounding bells, nor did anyone have to go to    42   . Although we lived “in”,    43   made us go to bed at a certain time; there was no “ lights out”.

The    44  thing was that practically all the students went to class, and very few people stayed up late at night. Only the new people stayed up or    45  class. The new ones always went wild    46   , but his wildness never lasted long. The freedom took some getting used to. Our teachers treated us like  _47  ; never did we have to   48_   “ stand up”, “ sit down”, “ speak out”. I don’t    49    one student who didn’t try his best.

The subjects were the same as those in the ___50_____ school, but what a difference in the method! For example, in botany (植物学) we had   51__  classes in the spring or fall, but instead we planted two gardens, a vegetable garden and a flower garden. Then in winter we each studied a few    52  things about what we had grown. In math the students built three different sizes of storerooms---small ones   53   , but usable. They did this instead of having lessons in the classroom. They really had a    54  time, too, designing everything, drawing the blueprints(蓝图;设计图), figuring out the angles and so on. I didn’t take    55__ . But I could do the basic things with numbers. That’s   56   .

57_    I think I am a      58    person for having gone to the school. I can read and write as well as anyone else of my age, and I think better. That’s probably a real big      ___59     between the free school and the regular school--- the amount of    60   .

I was six when I joined my father and two brothers at sunrise in the hayfields of Eufaula,Oklahoma.By the time I was eight I was helping Dad fix up low-income rent properties. He gave me a penny for every nail I pulled out of old boards.
I got my first real job,at JM’s restaurant in town, when I was 12.My main responsibilities were cleaning tables and washing dishes, but sometimes I helped cook.
Every day after school I would head to JM’s and work until ten.On Saturdays I worked from two until eleven. At that age it was unlucky going to work and watching my friends run off to swim or play.I didn’t necessarily like work, but I love what working allowed me to have.Because of my job I was always the one buying when my friends and I went to the local bar Tastee Freez. This made me proud.
Word that I was honest and hard-working got around town.A local clothing store offered credit to me although I was only in the seventh grade.I immediately charged a $68 sports coat and a $22 pair of trousers.I was making only 65 cents an hour, and I was already $90 in debt!So I learned early the danger of easy credit.I paid it off as soon as I could.
My first job taught me discipline, responsibility and brought me a level of personal satisfaction few of my friends had experienced. As by father, who worked three jobs, once told me,“If you understand sacrifice and commitment, there are not many things in life you can’t have.”How right he was!

One morning I was woken by my mother’s angry voice. I opened my eyes and found it was seven forty , so jumped out of bed and rushed to a nearby bus stop without breakfast. Fortunately the bus started going as soon as I got on it. I was sure I could reach the school before the bell rang.
However, the bus suddenly stopped. There was something wrong with it and we had to get off and wait for another one. I felt I couldn’t wait and the school was only fifteen minutes’ walk, so I ran to the school as fast as possible. Just at this moment, it began to rain hard.
I reached the classroom with all my clothes wet through. Mr. Smith, our physics teacher, had begun his class. I was always afraid of him. I hesitated (犹豫) for a moment, and then I opened the door.
“It’s you again, Jim,” Mr. Smith said angrily. “I’ve told you not to be late, but you...” Then he suddenly stopped when he noticed my wet clothes. He quickly took off his own jacket and asked me to put it on. “I don’t want you to catch a cold,” he said kindly. I went to my seat with Mr. Smith’s jacket on. It was a bit large for me but I felt very warm in it. I found, for the first time, Mr. Smith’s physics class so interesting and I changed my mind, there and then, about being afraid of him.

Mr. Smith didn’t let him go into the classroom.
    4. D.
