I remember the first time I met Alfred after years. He was sitting on a bench in the park. He looked very sad and cold. He hadn’t got a coat on and it started to rain. Usually, I don’t like to stop to speak to a stranger who looked like that. His shoes were well-cleaned and his clothes were quite smart, but he did not have an umbrella with him and he was getting wet in the rain. I stopped walking and said to him in a nice voice. “ Are you OK?” he looked up, and was surprised to see me. He cried out. “ Are you …” he couldn’t remember my name. I was also surprised. He was Alfred! “ I’m Tom, Alfred, what are you doing here?” I asked. He did not explain to me, but caught my hand, and asked how my life was like. I told him that I was out of job. I suggested that we go somewhere warm and dry.
So we found a café nearby and continued our conversation. I learned that he married with two children, and his wife was Sherry. I could not believe my ears. Twenty years ago his best friend was Linda, and Sherry was his worst enemy! They often had quarrels ( 争吵) and fights in the play.
Alfred told me that he became a businessman when he graduated from the school and owned two companies in the city. I asked him why he was sitting in the rain in the park. He said that he had just had a quarrel with Sherry, and acting in the same way as when she was young, threw him out of the door and locked him out. He was young, threw him out of the door and locked him out. He was waiting for her to be calm and let him in again.

I was sleeping soundly last night when I was awakened by someone’s groans(呻吟).I listened , and heard it was from Sam,a student from Africa. I really wanted to go on sleeping, as I had insomnia(失眠)and had just fallen asleep, but I couldn’t because Sam groaned louder and louder, showing he was seriously ill.

At that time , Robbie,a student from China , also got up to help. We found some pills, got some water , and helped him sit up to take them, hoping this would make his pain go down a little and get over the difficult time. If only daytime would come soon, everything would become easier.

Things went contrary相反)to our wishes. Sam’s condition developed from bad to worse. We telephoned the emergency service , and in no time an ambulance stopped in front of our gate. We helped the medical(医疗)workers carry Sam to the vehicle, and then both Robbie and I got in and took Sam to the hospital.

We helped him go through many medical examinations. After all kinds of tests,we were told that the final diagnosis(诊断)was appendicitis(盲肠炎). Luckily , Sam didn’t need an operation because we brought him to the hospital in time. He got timely treatment.

Did you ever wonder how some of your favorite foods, products or toys came about? Believe it or not, they may have been an accident, or a failure of some other intention. Below, we found three mistakes we’re thankful for turned out to be what they are.

1. Most historians hold that the Chinese invented fireworks in the 9th century when they discovered how to make gunpowder. Story has it that a Chinese cook accidentally mixed together what were then considered common kitchen items and noticed they burnt. When put tightly in a bamboo tube and lit, it blew up.

2. In May of 1886, a law led John Pemberton, a pharmacist(药剂师), to rewrite the formula(配方) for “Pemberton’s French Wine Coca”, his popular headache treatment. Containing sugar instead of wine as a sweetener, the outcome became something for Coke, which was later mixed with carbonated(碳酸) water. His bookkeeper suggested the name Coca-Cola because he thought the two C’s would look good together, which is how what we call Coca-Cola, a world-wide drink came into being.

3. During World WarⅡ, scientists at the University of Birmingham invented the magnetron(磁控管)—an important heat-producing part of the microwave oven. While working for Raytheon Corporation after the war, the American engineer Percy Spencer was testing the magnetron when a chocolate bar in his pocket melted. He went on to test other foods including popcorn kernels(仁), and found it to be a much more efficient way to cook. In 1947 Raytheon came out with the first restaurant microwave oven, which was six feet tall and weighed 750 lbs.

3.The underlined phrase “ blew up” might mean _______ in Chinese.

4.What can we learn from the above invention stories?
