Dear World,

My son starts school today. It’s going to be strange and new to him for some time. And I wish you would treat him gently.

You see, up to now, he has been king of his own room. He has been boss of the backyard. I have always been around to treat his wounds (伤), and to comfort his feelings.

But now things are going to be different. This morning, he’s going to walk down the front steps, wave his hand and start on his great adventure (探险).

So, World, I wish you would take him by the little hand and teach him the things he will have to know. Teach him there are heroes, leaders and friends in this world. Give him quiet time to think over the mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on the green hill.

Teach him to believe in his own ideas, even if everyone else tells him they are wrong.

Teach him to stand and fight if he thinks he is right.

Teach him never to put a price on his heart and soul.

Teach him gently, World, but don’t coddle (溺爱) him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel (钢). This is a big order, World, and see what you can do. He’s such a little fellow.

It was an unexpected (意想不到的) holiday. On April 9, we were told to leave school and stay at home because of a new deadly disease called SARS.

School is much better than home. It is not very nice to be stuck at home (憋在家里), unable to go out. Although our classes are sometimes boring, going to school is much better than staying at home. I am even starting to miss some of my teachers. It would be nice just to see their faces again. Meeting old classmates would be great too. It feels as if I haven't seen them for ages (很久). After weeks of being at home, I asked my parents to take my cousins and me to the Great Wall. Being able to get outside made me feel excited. It was not very crowded there because few people were leaving their homes. Another good thing is, our school website is offering us lessons on some of our subjects. So we can get in touch with (保持联系) our teachers on the Web.

Calling friends every day is a lot of fun.My school has asked me to do a special job during this unusual holiday. Every day I phone some of my classmates and ask them to take their temperatures. I also ask them if they have done their homework. Then I give the information to our teacher. This is a lot of fun. I have never made so many phone calls to my classmates! Nobody knows how long this holiday will last. When we go back to school, I hope everything will return to normal. I miss my friends and school very much.

People often say, “Children can’t do math problem, it’s because parents can’t do their children’s homework.” Here’s an example to show what I mean.

The other day my daughter brought home her math homework.“I have to subtract(减)179 from 202,” she said.

  “It’s quite easy,” I said.“You put the 202 over the 179.”

  “But we need a 10 here.Where is the 10?”

“I don’t know where the 10 is.Let’s just subtract 179 from 202.Nine from two is three. You carry one and add it to seven.Eight from zero is two.The answer is 23.”

“We can’t do it that way.We have to use the 10.”

“Well, I’m going to call your teacher to see how she subtracts 179 from 202.”

Over the telephone, I said that I was having a bit of trouble with the homework she had given to my daughter. The teacher said, “In the right-hand column(栏)we have units of one.The two in that column counts for two ones. The zero in the center counts for zero tens. The two in the left-hand column counts for hundreds. Are you clear?” But I didn’t think I was clear.

I hung up and found my way to the medicine box.My head was now hurting.I started putting pills of medicine into my mouth.“How many did you take?” my wife asked.“I took one and then I took another…I know one and one was two, but don’t ask me what it is now.”
