At the end of a writing class, I asked the students to share what they had written. We had a new
student at the school, Al. Al had been with us for only a short while and was still trying to fit in (适应),
so I was a little surprised when he volunteered to read. I asked him to read, but inside I wished that the
other students would not laugh at him.
Al began to read, "If I had one wish, it would be to meet my dad..." He started out loud and clear.
He told how he had never seen his father. He told how he tried to be the only man in the house at such
a young age.
I took a look at the students. I knew some kids liked to laugh at others. However, all of my students
were listening. They were letting him do this, I thought. They were allowing him to share something.
"If I had one wish, it would be to meet my dad, so I wouldn't have to close my eyes every night just
wondering what he looks like," Al finished. The class stood up and applauded (鼓掌). They all ran to Al
with hugs. My eyes got wet.

learning when to keep my mouth closed.
My mom has told me again and again, "Robert, your constant bad words are hurting me. If you
continue to be this rude, you will get into big trouble."
It's been a problem at school several times too when teachers have told me something I didn't want
to hear. I used to feel it was my duty to stand up for myself.
One day in English class I began working on my homework until I heard a classmate talking behind
me. It was Nathaniel, talking to himself as usual.
I said ever so nicely, "Nathaniel, would you be quiet?"
Nathaniel continued talking to himself. I quickly shouted "Nathaniel, shut up!"
For the next five minutes, we threw hurtful words back and forth at each other.
"At least I don't have an ugly lazy eye like you!" I shouted.
I knew this would upset him deep inside. It would hurt his feelings and shut him up.
What I said filled him with anger. He tried to reach over my seat and grab me as he shouted, "That's
it! That's it!"
Surprised at his reaction, I sat back in my seat. Never had I seen Nathaniel act like this before.
Later on, we were taken to the principal's office.
There, Mr. Black, the principal, told us to discuss the matter. It wasn't until then that I finally found
that when I hurt someone physically, the wounds eventually heal. But when I hurt them with my words,
sometimes the pain (痛苦) never goes away.
At the end of the discussion, I said sorry to Nathaniel.
When I headed back to my room, I spent some time praying. I began to think about how often what
I said hurt others. But I believe that as I keep praying and asking God to help me, he'll tell me when to
keep my mouth closed.
B. Robert.
C. Black.
D. Green.
B. listened to the others
C. talked to himself
D. kept silent
B. 痛苦
C. 和好

B. we should try to help each other at school
C. it is one's duty to stand up for himself
D. words cause more pain than wounds
My name is Chau Kai Fat. I am 72 years old. I was born in China. Before we moved to Macao in the 1940s, we were farmers in a small village in China. We used to fly kites, take turtles for walks, jump ropes and watch grasshoppers fight when we were small. My father made kites for us. We had a pond in front of our house. These were many turtles there. We gathered around the pond after school. We took out the turtles and tied a rope around their little necks. Then we started taking them for walks. In summer, the grasshoppers were everywhere. We caught them and put them in a jar and watched them fight. The winner got a sweet and the loser had to sing. It was fun.
I am Peter, Mr. Chau's son. I was born in 1963. When I was at primary school, the most popular game was football. Everyone played football and we listened to football games on the radio. When I was in Form 3, our English teacher showed us an
English game ?--- Scrabble. We took seven letters from a bag.
Each letter has points. Then we made an English word with all
or some of the letters. We counted the points. The one who had
the most points would be the winner. The first time we played
the game we thought it was never-ending because everyone took so long to come up with a word. We began to enjoy it more after we played the game several times.
I am Wilson, Mr. Chau's grandson. My grandpa told me he watched grasshoppers before. My father told me he played ‘Scrabble’. However, I love computer games. A few weeks ago, a new game came out. It is called ‘Julio's Adventures’. I downloaded it from the Internet. In the game, Julio has to go through 14 levels to save the princess and to get the treasures. Sometimes, there are puzzles for you to solve. Sometimes, you see a monster in the tomb. You have to control Julio's movements and fight with the attacker by pressing the space bar. You can choose the weapons you like. I am still trying to get through level 8. lf you know the secrets, please e-mail them to me at ezboy@sunshine.net.cn.
There are pictures showing Mr. Chau Kai Fat, Peter and Wilson on the web page. Read the web page articles on page 34 again. Write the names of the persons in the blanks.
