　　Two sisters are playing games on the bank of a river．They are playing happily．One of them is Jenny, and the other is Rose．While they are running to the foot of a hill, they see a big brown bear standing before them．They are much frightened, and they run away at once．

　　“Please don't run! I won't eat you．I am a man, not a bear．I'm friendly,”the bear says．The two girls are looking at the bear．The bear stands up, his hair all falls there, a young man stands, he is tall, and has good looks．“It's lucky for me to meet you, you can save me,”says he．

　　“Who are you? How can we save you?”

　　“I'm Scoff．My father and mother don't know I'm a bear now．They are looking for me all the time．They don't know where I am．I see them often, but I cannot talk to them．Let me tell you something about me．”

　　“I was a prince,”the young man says．“One day, I played on the bank of the river, and old woman came, she said something and threw a brown coat at me．The old woman turned me into a brown bear．She said, ‘Only when you meet two girls on the bank of the river, and one of them is willing to be your wife, you can be a man again．’Today, it's my luck to meet you here．If one of you is willing to be my wife, you can save me．”The two sisters' faces turn red．The younger sister says,“I think I can save you, I would like to be your wife．”The prince says,“Thank goodness! Thank you very much．From now on, we are brother and sisters, the old woman cannot do anything to me．Let's go home, my father and mother will be very happy to see us．”

　　The prince takes the two sisters to his home．The prince becomes the king, they are very happy．

　　An old man was going home late one night with his horse and cart after a day's hard work．When he was not far from his house, the light on the cart went out．He tried but could not mend it．

　　He was near his home, and so he went along the road without a light．When a policeman saw this, he stopped the old carter．

　　"Where's your light?" asked the policeman．"No one may take a cart along a road at night without a light．You know that．You've broken the law．

　　"I had a light," said the old man, "but it has just gone out．"

　　"I don't believe that story," said the policeman．He took out a book and got ready to write．"What's your name and where do you live?" he asked．

　　"Please don't take my name," said the old man．"My house is just there．You can see it from here．I had a light nearly the whole way．I haven't come far without a light．"

　　"You came all the way without a light．What's your name?"

　　The carter quickly took the policeman's hand and put it down on the top of the light．The light was still hot, and burnt the policeman's hand．He jumped and he was very angry．

　　"Now, what do you think?" said the carter．"Did I come all the way without a light?"

Information to help you enjoy your visit

Welcome to Charlecote Park

　　Charlecote Park has been home to the Lucy family for over 800 years．Built in the 1550s with warm red bricks and decorated in Warwickshire stone, the house has a fascinating history．This history includes a royal visit from Queen Elizabeth I and the arrest and trial of a local young man called William Shakespeare．

What you will see today

　　The house opens at 12∶00 noon and usually closes at 5∶00 pm．Before you go around the house, we suggest that you listen to the introductory talk(held most days, every 30minutes)or watch the video in the Gatehouse．There are room attendants in most rooms who will be happy to answer any questions．

　　The gardens are interesting all year round and include the parterres(gardens with paths between the beds)in the west front and beautifully cut lawns．

　　The outbuildings are a must during your visit．Please take time to visit the Victorian kitchens, laundry, wine house and carriage collections all open at 10∶30 am and close at 5∶30 pm．

Restoration and care

　　So that we can continue to care for Charlecote Park, we ask visitors to the house：

　　Please do not wear sharp heeled shoes．

　　Photography, videotaping and mobile phones are not permitted inside the buildings．

　　Please don’t bring pushchairs, large bags or umbrellas into the house．These items can be stored at the entrance to the house(and are left at the owner’s risk)．

　　Smoking is not permitted in any building within the estate．
