They understand each other through the U.N. interpreters. Some of the interpreters speak as many as ten languages. But they all must know at least three of the official languages.

All of the 2,026 seats in the General Assembly Hall are equipped with earphones. The earphones are attached to the sides of the seats. At each seat there is a box that has a switch with numbers on it. There is a number for each of the six official languages and one for the speaker. By turning the switch, the listener can hear either the speaker or the translations into any of six languages; Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Now imagine that a meeting is going on. Some of the delegates(代表)speak only English. Others only French or Spanish. Still others speak only Russian or Chinese. How can they understand each other?

By using the earphones and listening to the amusing interpreters!

The interpreters sit in glass-walled, sound-proof booths(隔音的单个小间)looking over the Assembly Hall. They listen to each speaker and translate what he says almost immediately. They speak into microphone connected to the earphones at the listeners’ seats.

     How does this work?

Let’s say a delegate at the meeting is talking in Russian. The French delegate doesn’t understand Russian. So he turns the switch at his seat to the number for French. At once he hears the Russian speech translated into French.

The interpreters must be very good indeed. They must be able to hear someone talking and in a matter of seconds translate what he has said.

C. 口译人员               D. 笔译人员

3. The interpreters must speak at least     official languages.

A. 2    B. 3    C. 6    D. 10

4. If you speak only Chinese and the delegate is talking in French, how can you understand what he has said?

A. Try your best to learn French

B. Ask others who understand it

C. Turn the switch to the number for French

Let's say you're a manager of a division targeted for layoffs. You've seen the list of employees to be cut, but you've been asked to keep the information secret for two weeks. Now imagine that an employee on the list asks you whether he should be putting a down payment on his first home.

If you don't tell him, then he could be heading into a financial nightmare. If you do tell, you obviously break confidence with your company. Word may spread, shocking enough employees that you end up with a flight to the exit door. The problem deepens if yours is a public company carrying out layoffs because of an undecided combination that has yet to be announced. If the employee you tell gets wind of this news and acts on the information or passes it on to others who do, you might find yourself in a legal imbroglio(纠葛) because of breaking securities regulations.

It's important to keep in mind that you're unlikely to find a perfect solution for everyone. But you can manage the situation so that potential damage is minimized without having to break confidentiality or lie. The solution may be as simple as telling the employee that he should wait a couple of weeks and come back to talk to you then. If his follow-up question is whether a layoff is likely to come about, then it's fair enough to tell him you can't say one way or the other. The employee still may buy the house. And he may be angry with you. But doing the moral thing is often difficult exactly for this reason. Rather than being able to please everyone, you're trying to find a solution that's fairest to all involved, including yourself.

[ ]

A.Try to Find a perfect solution for everyone.

B.Tell him the situation.

C.Try to please him by giving him some money.

D.Tell him to wait a couple of weeks and come back to talk to you then, saying nothing more about the layoff.

Filmmakers Michele dive into an eerie (怪诞的) world. The usually colorful corals are a ghostly white. Most of the fish, crabs, and other animals have disappeared. The reef is sick and dying.

Coral reefs are often called “the rainforests of the sea” because of their abundance of life forms.A great diversity of animals finds food and shelter in every crack and crevice.

Today's reefs are about 10,000 years old.Found in sunny, shallow water in warm seas all over the world, reefs are made up of the hard shells of millions of corals. As corals live and die, they create a giant, rocky honeycomb.Only a thin top layer is living coral.

A reef grows only about as fast as your fingernails-three-quarters of an inch a year. But coral reefs are huge, and in time a healthy reef can be thousands of miles long.

Millions of people around the world rely on reef fish and other animals for food. And reefs provide protection from storms at sea.Without thousands of miles of reefs surrounding coastal areas, many beaches and even whole islands could be destroyed by the pounding of powerful ocean waves.

“Let's say a grazing animal like the parrot fish is overfished,” Michele explains.“Without them, the kind of algae (海藻) that the fish feed on could grow like weeds and take over the reef. The competition for space and sunlight could then starve the coral.”

Nearly 27 percent of the world's coral reefs have been lost or damaged. But there is hope. Many reefs around the world-including the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the reefs off the Florida Keys in the United States-are now protected areas where scientists study how to keep reefs healthy. They determine how many and which kinds of fish can be taken for food without hurting the reef's delicate balance.

There is hope, too, that people will learn to be good partners to the reefs.“We want our film to inspire people to help coral reefs,” says Michele.“For me, even though I may not go back to the South Pacific, just knowing the reefs are there and thriving brings a sense of contentment (满足) to my spirit.”

There are so many different plastic cards that adults have to carry around-library cards, savings cards for different banks, credit cards, just to name a few.So why not have one to replace them all?

Scott Barnhill, an 1l-year-old fifth-grade student in the US, has come up with an idea for a"Security One Card".

Sound smart? The US Patent(专利)Office thought so, and it approved a patent for his idea in April.

Here's an example of how Barnhill's idea would work.

Let's say you have the three cards mentioned above.Instead of carrying them all, you could have just one by having additional magnetic strips(磁条)added to it.

The magnetic strips can be added to any plastic card, even a blank one.

Companies could add their information to one of the strips. For example, you could ask a library to add a strip to your bankcard.

Barnhill has a lot of hobbies, including designing websites. He got the idea at the age of 9 when he saw his father using a keycard to enter their hotel room.He thought, "The hotels are wasting money with the key cards."So, instead of using a hotel-issued key card, guests could use their credit cards-if the hotel added a special magnetic strip. At check-out, the strip would simply be removed.

Now that he has his patent, his next step is a letter-writing campaign to get support from major credit card companies.

"I'm going to be writing letters to credit card companies to ask if they can co-operate.I hope they'll give me money every time someone puts a strip on the back of another card, or every time the idea is used,"Barnhill said."I'll write the letters and see what they say.If they say no, I'll ask someone else, another credit card company."

He is hoping to make money from his patent and has decided it would be better to collect royalties(专利使用费)if the idea takes off rather than sell his patent.

"The ATM person who invented that sold it totally, and if he'd chosen royalties he'd get like 2 cents for every transaction(交易)and he'd be a billionaire now,"Scott said.

(1)

The immediate cause of Scott's invention was that ________.

[ ]

A.

he found that adults have to carry around so many plastic cards

B.

he realized it's big waste to make so many plastic cards instead of only one

C.

he found even a hotel issued its own cards-keycards

D.

he realized it would be a good chance to make big money

(2)

To use a"Security One Card",________.

[ ]

A.

one has to add additional magnetic strips to it oneself

B.

one has to pay Scott Barnhill each time a magnetic strip is added

C.

all the companies need to add their information to a magnetic strip by themselves

D.

one has to get the permission of the credit card company first

(3)

The underlined phrase"takes off"in the last but one paragraph probably means ________.

[ ]

A.

makes money

B.

wins a lot of support

C.

is worth a lot

D.

is practical

(4)

From the story, we can see Scott is ________.

[ ]

A.

more magic than smart

B.

clever but lazy

C.

creative, determined and wise

D.

far-sighted
