Why do you ask such a thing? the man said angrily. “I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour? pleaded the little boy. “If you must know, I make $ 20 an hour. “Oh, the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $ 10? The father was furious, “If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior. The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and, started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $ 10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son? He asked. “No, daddy, I’m awake, replied the boy. “I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier, said the man. “It’s been a long day and I took out my aggravationon you. Here’s the $10 you asked for. The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh, thank you, daddy! He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpledup bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his father. “Why do you want more money if you already have some? the father grumbled. “Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do, the little boy replied. “Daddy, I have $ 20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.

The dog, called Prince, was an intelligent animal and a slave to Williams. From morning till night, he had a number of clear duties, for which Williams had patiently trained him and, like a good pupil, Prince lived for the chance to prove his abilities. When Williams wanted to put on his boots, he would murmur. “Boots” and within seconds the dog would drop them at his feet. At nine every morning Prince ran off to the general store in the village, returning shortly not only with Williams’ daily paper but with a packet of Williams’ favorite tobacco. A trained gun-dog, Prince had a large soft mouth specially evolved (演变;进化) for the sake of carrying hunted creatures, so the paper and tobacco came to no harm, never even showing a tooth mark.

Williams was an engine driver, and he had to work at irregular times ― “days”, “late days”, or “nights”. Over the years Prince got to know these periods of work and rest, and knew when his master would leave the house and return and the dog did not waste this knowledge. If Williams overslept, Prince barked at the bedroom door until he woke. On his return, Williams’ slippers were brought to him, the paper and tobacco too.

A curious thing happened to Williams during the snow and ice of last winter. One evening he slipped and fell on the icy pavement somewhere between the village and his home. He was so badly shaken that he stayed in bed for three days; and not until he got up and dressed again did he discover that he had lost his wallet containing over fifty pounds. The house was turned upside down in the search, but the wallet was not found. However, two days later, Prince dropped the wallet into Williams’ hand. Very muddy, and wet through, the wallet still contained fifty-three pounds.
