LONDON —A British judge on Thursday sentenced a businessman who sold fake (假冒的)bomb detectors (探测器) to 10 years in prison, saying the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences.

It is believed that James McCormick got about $77. 8 million from the sales of his detectors — which were based on a kind of golf ball finder — to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia.

McCormick, 57,was convicted (判罪) of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London.

“Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people,’’ Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. “You have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt.”

The detectors, sold for up to $ 42,000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science” and were of no use.

McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand.

“I never had any bad results from customers,” he said.

39. Why was McCormick sentenced to prison?

A. He sold bombs.                              B. He caused death of people.

C. He made detectors.                              D. He cheated in business.

40. According to the judge, what McCormick had done ________ .

A. increased the cost of safeguarding

B. lowered people’s guard against danger

C. changed people’s idea of social security

D. caused innocent people to commit crimes

41. Which of the following is true of the detectors?

A. They have not been sold to Africa.

B. They have caused many serious problems.

C. They can find dangerous objects in water.

D. They don't function on the basis of science.

42. It can be inferred from the passage that McCormick _________ .

A. sold the equipment at a low price

B. was well-known in most countries

C. did not think he had committed the crime

D. had not got such huge profit as mentioned in the text

(Para. 1-3)

McCormick, 57,was convicted of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London

(Para. 4)

cheating conduct, promoted a false sense of security, contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people

(Para. 5-7)

But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science” and were of no use, sold…to… , never had any bad results

根据问题中的关键词according to the judge定位第四段的第一句:your cheating conduct … promoted a false sense of security and … contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people(你的欺骗行为提高了人们虚假的安全感并助推给无辜百姓带来死亡和伤害)。

A对应文章倒数第二段的最后一句he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand。 B对应第一段第一句“the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences”,法官只说罪犯没有关注潜在的致命后果,而不是已经导致严重的问题。C对应第五段的第一句话“were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air”提示,探测仪的功能只是据说,而不一定真的具备找到水中危险物品的功能。选项D定位第五段的最后一句“in fact they ‘lacked any grounding in science’ and were of no use可知,这种探测仪没有科学根据,也毫无用途,和D“没有科学根据的工作原理”相吻合,故最佳答案是D。

C“认为他没有犯罪”和第七段对应,其中他所说的“I never had any bad results from customers”和C符合,C是正确答案。

It is a hot summer day, and you feel thirsty.A friend gives you a glass of cold lemonade. How do you feel when you see the glass? Will you describe your feeling as happiness or as pleasure?I believe you will say it is a feeling of pleasure. There is a connection between these two kinds of feelings, and sometimes one causes the other, but they are not the same.Pleasure is more dependent on the five senses while happiness is independent of them.

When you are happy, little unpleasant events usually do not disturb you. When you are unhappy, you feel as if everything is against you.You may compensate for it by eating chocolate and sweets because this gives you pleasure, yet you stay unhappy.A person may smoke cigarettes because it gives him pleasure, yet this does not make him happier, especially if he knows the fact that it is not good for his health.

The physical world is always in a changing state. At each moment a new thing is being created, changed, transformed and then destroyed. This is the normal state of things and no one can change it.If we stay still in a certain state, we are sure to experience unhappiness sooner or later. On the other hand, if we adjust to the environment, nothing can influence our moods. Then outer events have nothing to do with our inner joy of mind.

The room of the mind is filled with worry or fear.If you are free of thinking about them, the room has been emptied, and then you will see what is happening and experience it.When your mind stays quiet, you will see that happiness comes from the inside.

A Low-Carbon Economy(LCE)or Low-Fossil-Fuel Economy(LFFE)is an economy which has a smallest output of greenhouse gas(GHG)release into the atmosphere, but specifically refers to the greenhouse gas CO2.Recently, most of scientific and public opinion has come to the conclusion that there is such an accumulation of GHG(especially CO2)in the atmosphere due to human-related activities that the climate is changing. The over-concentration of these gases is producing global warming that affects long-term climate, with negative impacts on humanity in the foreseeable future.Globally performed LCEs therefore, are proposed as a means to avoid catastrophic climate change, and as a forerunner to the more advanced, zero-carbon society and renewable-energy economy.

Some nations are low-carbon societies which are not heavily industrialized or populated. In order to avoid climate change at any point in the future, all nations considered carbon-thick societies and societies which are heavily populated, should become zero-carbon societies and economies.Several of these countries have promised to become “low carbon” but not entirely zero carbon, and claim that release will be cut by 100% by offsetting release rather than stopping all release. In other words, some release will continue which will be offset, so they are not low-release.

Nations seek to become low-carbon economies as part of a national global warming reductionstrategy.A comprehensive strategy to manage global warming is carbon neutrality, geoengineering andadaptation to global warming.

Nuclear power, or, the proposed strategies of carbon collection and storage(CCS)have been proposed as the primary means to achieve a LCE while continuing to exploit non-renewable resources; there is concern, however, with the matter of spent-nuclear-fuel storage, security and the uncertainty of costs and time needed to successfully carry out CCS worldwide and with guarantees that the stored release will not leak into the atmosphere.Alternatively, many have proposed renewable energy should be the main basis of a LCE, but, they have their associated problems of high-cost and inefficiency; this is changing, however, since investment and production have been growing significantly in recent times.Furthermore, regardless of the effect to the atmosphere by GHG releases, the growing issue of peak oil may also be reason enough for a change to a LCE.

(1)

Low-carbon economy is encouraged for the following reasons except that ________.

[ ]

A.

too much greenhouse gas CO2 is released

B.

the over-concentration of greenhouse gases is producing global warming

C.

it can avoid catastrophic climate change

D.

low carbon and zero carbon nations and societies claim for it

(2)

The underlined word in the first paragraph probably means ________.

[ ]

A.

warning

B.

pioneer

C.

symbol

D.

guide

(3)

According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

[ ]

A.

Nuclear power could act as one of the primary means to achieve a LCE.

B.

There's worry about spent-nuclear-fuel storage, security and the uncertainty of costs.

C.

The stored release will be likely to leak into the atmosphere.

D.

Renewable energy tends to become the only means to achieve a LCE.

(4)

From the last paragraph, we can infer that the writer's attitude toward the proposal of adapting renewable energy is ________.

[ ]

A.

negative

B.

positive

C.

self-confident

D.

doubtful

When I was eight, my parents, my younger brother, Stewart, and a girl called Margo Edwards, who was at school with us, went on holiday to Mozambique. One day, we took out a small rowing boat with an outboard motor on it, and went fishing on a lagoon at a place called San Martina.

1.

Suddenly, as if out of nowhere, there was this disturbance in the water. I remember at first everyone thought it was a dolphin, but it wasn't leaping in and out of the water, and before long we could see this grey fin moving purposefully towards us.

It then circled around our rowing boat, and I remember my father saying: 'Well, I think that's a shark . . .'

2.

My mother was screaming, and father was shouting obscenities at this thing, which he was to bash (痛击) back with one of the oars. I had never seen my parents in obvious terror before, and that's something which never leaves you.

3.

My mother clutched the three of us around her. I remember she had a navy blue robe, with huge starfishes and sunflowers on it, and us three kids gratefully huddled together inside it.

4.

As soon as we were in the fishing boat there was this almost hysterical laughter, and I remember feeling very cold, and being unable to stop trembling.

5.

We all talked about it continually, too, and probably made out we were far braver than we were. And there was lots of re-enactment(表演). I remember that we made mud pools. One of us would be crawling along, playing the shark, and the others screaming and shouting: 'Kill the shark'.

A.For the longest time this thing kept circling around us, and hitting our rowing boat, while Dad continued fighting it off, stabbing at it with his oar, which was probably the worst thing to have done because it must have made the beast even angrier than it already was.

B.Our story went back to the town. It spread like wildfire. Everybody knew about it, and people talked about it endlessly. My father was regarded as a bit of a hero: Dad the sharkbasher. If he'd caught the thing, then I suppose he would have been completely heroic.

C.The shark became a legend in the town and there were many local fishermen who claimed to have seen it moving around the bay. But despite all the stories of sightings, nobody ever managed to catch the thing.

D.It was early evening when the motor stopped, and we were stranded (搁浅). We started to shout in the hope that somebody would hear us; we knew the sound could travel because of the water being very flat and calm.

E. Eventually, people in a fishing boat heard us screaming, and came alongside, and a fisherman tied our boat up to his. He was very careful, or he seemed to be, and he and my father handed first us kids, and then mother, through to his boat, and our rowing boat was towed behind.

F. This monster started bashing our boat, which began rocking from side to side. We were just terrified because the boat was by now rocking so much we thought we were going to be tipped into the water and bitten up by this thing. I remember assuming that we were going to die.
