A little old couple walked slowly into McDonald’s one cold winter evening. They looked out of place among the young families and young couples eating there that night.
Some of the customers looked admiringly at them. You could tell what the admirers were thinking. “ Look, there is a couple who has been through a lot together, probably for 60 years or more !”
After paying for the meal, the couple took a table near the back wall and started taking food off the tray. There was one hamburger, one order of French fries and one drink. The little old man carefully cut the hamburger in half. He placed one half in front of his wife. Then he carefully counted out the French fries, divided them in two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them.
As the man began to eat his few bites of hamburger the crowd began to get restless. Again you could tell what they were thinking, “ That poor old couple. All they can afford is one meal for the two Of them.”
As the man began to eat his French fries one young man stood and came over to the old couple’s table. He politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple to eat. The old man replied that they were just fine. They were used to sharing everything.
Then the crowd noticed that the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She just sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink.
Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy them something to eat. This time the lady explained that, no, they were used to sharing everything together.
As the little old man finished eating and was wiping his face neatly the young man could stand it no longer. Again he came over to their table and offered to buy some food.
After being politely refused again, he finally asked a question of the little old lady. “ Ma’am, why aren’t you eating? You said that you shared everything. What is it that you are waiting for?” She answered, “The teeth”.

So you thought the hamburger was the world’s most popular fast food? After all, McDonald’s Golden Arches are found everywhere in the world. But no, there is another truly universal fast food, the best fast food. It’s easy to make, easy to serve, much more varied than the hamburger, can be eaten with the hands, and it's delivered to your front door or served in fancy restaurants. It has been one of America’s favourite foods for over 50 years. It is, of course, the pizza.

It’s kind of silly to talk about the moment when pizza was “invented”. It gradually developed over the years, but one thing is for certain—it has been around for a very long time. The idea of using pieces of flat, round bread as plates came from the Greeks. They called them “plakuntos” and ate them with various simple toppings such as oil, Garlic, onions, and herbs. The Romans enjoyed eating something similar and called it “picea”. By about 1000 A. D.in the city of Naples, “picea” had become “pizza” and people were experimenting with more toppings: cheese, ham, anchovies and finally the tomato; brought to Italy from Mexico and Peru in the sixteenth century. Naples became the pizza Capital of the world. In 1889, King Umberto I and Queen Marguerita heard about pizza and asked to try it. They invited pizza maker, Raffle Esposito, to make it for them. He decided to make the pizza like the Italian flag, so he used red tomatoes, white mozzarella cheese, and green basil leaves. The Queen loved it and the new pizza was named “Pizza Marghcrita” in her honor.

Pizza migrated to America with the Italians at the end of the nineteenth century. The first pizzeria in the United States was opened in 1905 at 53 Spring Street, New York City, by Gennaro Lombardi. But the popularity of pizza really exploded when American soldiers returned from Italy after World War II and talked excitedly about “that great Italian dish”. Americans are now the greatest producers and consumers of pizza in the world.

      C.plakuntos→pizza→picea                       D.plakuntos→picea→pizza

A poor traveller stopped under the tree to eat the boiled rice and vegetables which he had brought with him. A few metres away, there was a small shop by the side of the road where a woman was frying (油炸)fish and selling it to travelers. The woman watched the poor traveler carefully, and when he finished his food and began to go, she shouted rudely, “You haven’t paid me for the fried fish!”
“But I have not had any fried fish!” he said.
“But everyone can see that you enjoyed the smell of my fried fish with your rice and vegetables,” said the woman, “If you had not smelled the fish, your meal would not have been so pleasant!”
Soon a crowd collected, and although they supported the poor traveler, they had to admit that wind was blowing from the shop to the place where he had eaten, and that it had carried the smell of the fried fish to him.
Finally, the woman took the poor traveler to a judge, who said, “The woman says that the traveler ate his meal with the smell of her fried fish. The traveler agrees that the wind was blowing from the woman’s shop to the place where he ate his rice and vegetables, and that it carried the smell of her fried fish to his nose while he was eating, so he must pay for it. What does your fried fish cost?” he asked the woman.
“Twenty-five cents a plate,” she answered, delighted.
“Then go outside together,” said the judge. “There the traveler must hold up a twenty-five-cent piece so that its shadow(影子)falls on the woman’s hand. The price of the smell of a plate of fried fish is the shadow of twenty-five cents.”

A study of older men in The Netherlands, known for its delicious chocolate, showed those who ate the same amount of one-third of a chocolate bar every day had lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of death.

The researchers say, however, it’s too early to conclude that it was the chocolate that led to better health. The men who ate more cocoa products could have eaten other food that made them healthier. Experts also point out that eating too much chocolate can make you fat ― a risk for both heart disease and high blood pressure.

“It’s why too early to make recommendations about whether people should eat more cocoa or chocolate,” said Brian Buijsse, an expert for nutrition at Wageningen University in The Netherlands, who co-authored the study.

Still, the Dutch Study, supported by grants (拨款) from the Netherlands Prevention Foundation, appears to be the largest so far to document a health effect for cocoa beans. And it confirms findings of smaller, shorter-term studies that also linked chocolate with lower blood pressure.

Researchers examined the eating habits of 470 healthy men who were not taking blood pressure medicine. The men who ate the most products made from cocoa beans ― including cocoa drinks, chocolate bars and chocolate pudding ― had lower blood pressure and a 50 percent lower risk of death.

“This is a very important article providing epidemiological support for what many researchers have been observing is experimental models,” said Cesar Fraga of the University of California Davis, who does similar research but was not involved in the new study.

Could the study results apply to women?

“Our study consisted of elderly inch,” Buijsse said. “If you look at the other studies, you will see the same effects in men and women, younger people and older people. The findings may be generalizable to women, but you never know.”

52. Which of the following might NOT be considered a product made from cocoa beans?

  C. Chocolate pudding        D. Cocoa drink

53. We can infer from the last paragraph that          .

  A. It has been concluded that the findings are generalizable to women

  B. It needs confirming whether women can share the same effects

  C. The study results cannot apply to women

  D. The findings are applicable to both men and women

54. Which of the following has the similar meaning to the underlined word “generalizable?”
