LONDON —A British judge on Thursday sentenced a businessman who sold fake (假冒的)bomb detectors (探测器) to 10 years in prison, saying the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences.

It is believed that James McCormick got about $77. 8 million from the sales of his detectors — which were based on a kind of golf ball finder — to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia.

McCormick, 57,was convicted (判罪) of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London.

“Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people,’’ Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. “You have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt.”

The detectors, sold for up to $ 42,000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science” and were of no use.

McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand.

“I never had any bad results from customers,” he said.

39. Why was McCormick sentenced to prison?

A. He sold bombs.                              B. He caused death of people.

C. He made detectors.                              D. He cheated in business.

40. According to the judge, what McCormick had done ________ .

A. increased the cost of safeguarding

B. lowered people’s guard against danger

C. changed people’s idea of social security

D. caused innocent people to commit crimes

41. Which of the following is true of the detectors?

A. They have not been sold to Africa.

B. They have caused many serious problems.

C. They can find dangerous objects in water.

D. They don't function on the basis of science.

42. It can be inferred from the passage that McCormick _________ .

A. sold the equipment at a low price

B. was well-known in most countries

C. did not think he had committed the crime

D. had not got such huge profit as mentioned in the text

(Para. 1-3)

McCormick, 57,was convicted of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London

(Para. 4)

cheating conduct, promoted a false sense of security, contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people

(Para. 5-7)

But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science” and were of no use, sold…to… , never had any bad results

根据问题中的关键词according to the judge定位第四段的第一句:your cheating conduct … promoted a false sense of security and … contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people(你的欺骗行为提高了人们虚假的安全感并助推给无辜百姓带来死亡和伤害)。

A对应文章倒数第二段的最后一句he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand。 B对应第一段第一句“the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences”,法官只说罪犯没有关注潜在的致命后果,而不是已经导致严重的问题。C对应第五段的第一句话“were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air”提示,探测仪的功能只是据说,而不一定真的具备找到水中危险物品的功能。选项D定位第五段的最后一句“in fact they ‘lacked any grounding in science’ and were of no use可知,这种探测仪没有科学根据,也毫无用途,和D“没有科学根据的工作原理”相吻合,故最佳答案是D。

C“认为他没有犯罪”和第七段对应,其中他所说的“I never had any bad results from customers”和C符合,C是正确答案。

Americans are proud of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?

Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian(百姓的)clothes.People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes.Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic(技工)is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity(身份)than to step out of uniform?

Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry(洗衣店)bills. They are tax-deductible(可减税的).They are often more comfortable and more durable than civilian clothes.

Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems.Though they are long-lasting, often their initial(最初的)expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain(维持, 维护), requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering(洗涤)possible with many types of civilian clothes.

Sooner or later everyone has to write something-a thank-you note, a report at a meeting, a complaint or an apology. If you hate writing assignments in school, or if you still fear to put pen to paper, facing that empty page is almost as frightening as you’re facing a tiger. How to write it?There’s no mystery.Clear writing is just clear thinking. Here are some techniques for you.

  Thinking on paper

Sit down with pencil and paper or at the computer screen and start outlining what you want to say, why it’s important, why it matters, and what its impact is on the reader.Just get the ideas down. The next step is to go back and put them in order.

  Writing first sentence

Try to make your first sentence catch the reader’s eyes, because ________, the reader isn’t going to read on.Get a good, clear lead sentence that summarizes your points and that answers the reader’s question “What’s in it for me?” If you can’t do it in one sentence, then do it in two or three but keep them short.

  Remembering the reader

Short, simple words are better than long words.Short sentences are better than long sentences.Remember that the goal is to communicate, not express yourselves. Most people are so devoted to what they want to say that they forget somebody else has to be able to read it.Too much information makes you lose readers before they get to the meat(某物之主要或重要的)of what you want to say.

  Reading and rewriting

Read what you have written out loud, and listening for any awkward sentences. All good writers read, then rewrite.Back off a little bit from what you’re writing. It’s an old standard, but if you can, write something and come back a day late.
