Do you find that late at night, your homework done, you aren't tired enough to sleep? In fact, you could get out of bed and go for a run, or play a quick game of basketball? It's not a good feeling because, although you don't feel sleepy, you certainly will in the morning.

It's probably not coffee or tea or other stimulants (刺激物) that are the problem.Indeed, it may not be a problem at all, according to some researchers, just the way the teenage body works. But not all schools seem to realize this.

It seems that some American schools are getting the message and giving teenagers more time to sleep in the morning. They've found that starting after 8 am makes students more likely to turn up on time to school, do better work, and generally feel happier.

But in most American schools after school activities like sports and bus routes are given as reasons for a morning start time between 7 am and 8 am.

All this, the US National Sleep Foundation (美国国家睡眠协会) says, has serious consequences for teenagers. It means they don't get the 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night they need.In fact, some teens get just 7 hours or less under the covers.

Researchers have come to the conclusion over the last 10 years that teens cannot easily fall asleep until about 11 pm and need to sleep until about 8 the next morning.

Mary Carskadon of Brown University was in charge of a study of teen saliva (口水).Her team measured the amount of sleep-producing hormone (荷尔蒙) in the saliva.

She found teens have a higher hormone level late at night than either adults or young children. It also remains high the morning after. Why this is the case is not yet clear to scientists. But experts say they do know that the consequences to teenagers sleep deprivation (剥夺) are more serious than classrooms full of sleepy kids.

Falling asleep at roll call (点名) is just the beginning of the problem. In her book Snooze … or Lose Helen Emsellem says that sleep-deprived teens get sick more easily, are prone (易于) to headaches and get poorer grades.

1.According to the article, what contributes to many teenagers' late sleeping habits?

       A.Coffee and tea.                                 B.their habits.

  C.Activities before sleep.                     D.Biological clock.

2.According to researchers, starting schools later in the morning is likely to ______.

  A.improve teenagers' performance in studies

B.make teenagers get sick more easily

C.help teenagers get on with each other better

D.lead teenagers to go to bed later

3.Which group has the highest sleep-producing hormone level in their saliva late at night?

A.Young children.                           B.Teenagers.

C.The middle-aged.                         D.Old people.

4.Which of the following is FALSE?

A.Early morning starts are to blame for teen sleep deprivation.

B.Many American teenagers have trouble getting enough sleep.

C.Many American schools argue that after school activities help teenagers sleep.

D.The book Snooze … or Lose stresses the importance of good sleep for teenagers.

5.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A.Live Longer with better sleep            B.More Sleep needed

C.Sleepy? Spend less on activities          D.Unhealthy habits ruin good sleep

The Guidance Department (教导处) at Burrville High School has a staff (职员) of eleven. Most of their work is done with the students. But the staff sees a lot of parents, too.

“Parent meetings form a clear monthly pattern,” says Mildred Foreman, Guidance Director. “This pattern stays much the same from year to year. The busy months are October, March and May.”

September starts rather slowly. Few parents come in. Most of them want to discuss the schedules. October brings many behaviour problems. Some parents are called in. Others come by themselves. Things quiet down in November. December is a quiet month. “It’s the holiday,” Ms. Foreman says. “People want to come in, I know, but they decide to wait until after New Year’s Day.”

Report cards go home just before Christmas holidays. Bad marks bring parents in as school reopens. This happens again in March, another report card month. May is always the year’s busiest month. That’s when parents realize that their children might be held back (留级). They come in to see if anything can be done before things are decided in June.

阅读理解,阅读下列材料,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Kalle Lasn was in a supermarket parking lot one afternoon when he had an experience that changed his life.In order to shop at the store, he needed to put money into the shopping cart to use it.Annoyed that he had to "pay to shop, " Lasn jammed the coin into the cart so that it wouldn't work.It was an act of rebellion-the first of many-for Lasn.

Born in Estonia, Kalle Lasn moved to Australia as a young man and then later to Japan, where he founded a marketing research firm in Tokyo.Eventually, Lasn moved to Canada and for several years produced documentaries(纪录片)for public television. In the late 1980s, Lasn made an advertisement that spoke out against the logging industry and the deforestation going on in the Pacific Northwest. When he tried to show his ad on TV, though, no station in this area would give him airtime. In response, Lasn and a colleague founded Adbusters Media Foundation, a company for the "Human right to communicate.

Adbusters produces magazine, newspaper, and TV ads with a social message. Many use humor and irony to make their points:In one, for example, a man chain smokes a brand of cigarettes called "Hope".In another, a child is dressed in an outfit used in fast-food ads.Next to the child is a note from its mother telling the restaurant to leave her child alone.

  Adbusters also has a magazine and a web site, the Culture Jammers Network, whose members include students, artists, and activists as well as educators and businesspeople interested in social change.Many of these "culture jammers" are working to raise awareness about different social issues by hosting events like "Buy Nothing Day", " No Car Day" and "TV Tumdif Week".Lasn and his partners hope these events will encourage people to think about questions such as;

·What kinds of things are we being encouraged to buy by the media?

·Should cars be our primary means of transportation?

·How are television and radio being used now? How could we be using them?

Some culture jammers are using other methods to challenge how people think. Some pretend to be shoppers. They move items in stores from one shelf to another making it difficult for people to find things easily.Other culture jammers break into large company well sites and jam them so that they become unusable. The goal in both cases ia to prevent "Business as usual" and to gel people to ask themselves questions such as "Why am I shopping here? " or "Why should I buy this product? "

Lasn and members of the Culture Jammers Network want to make people aware of social issues, but they also believe it's important to think of solutions, too."A lot of people tell you everything that's wrong but they never say much about how to fix these problems, " says Lasn."But there is plenty we can do.If you start despairing, you have lost everything."

Though many TV stations still won't show Adbusters' " uncommercials", some cable TV stations have started to.People all over the world have joined the Culture Jammers Network and are doing their part to promote social change.
