One of my friends, though with the makings of a merchant, was bent on being a painter．He resigned from office and devoted himself entirely to painting at home．Several years, however, saw no progress in this regard．
A painful retrospection(回顾)bought him to his senses．He made up his mind to take up business in place of painting．It took him only a few years to become a rich businessman．Meanwhile he spent his spare time exchanging experience and skills in painting．His works finally won acclamation(欢呼、喝彩)by expert painters and were on sale in art gallery and grand hotels．He had his collections published and his dream of becoming a painter came true at last．

There is a growing debate about the most effective way for students to study. Traditionally studying alone was thought to be the best way to ensure good exam results. When studying alone you can focus your mind better than when you are with others. You also have the freedom to choose what topic to study and when, as you don't need the agreement of others. Students that prefer to study alone often say that when they study with their classmates they waste a lot of time because the discussion is often about non-study topics such as television or holidays.
In the last few years, however, more and more students have started studying in groups. There are several reasons why many students prefer this method First, they find that studying is more fun as they can share the experience with others rather than staying in their rooms. In groups, they can discuss the subject together and when something is not understood they can ask each other questions. They can use the knowledge of their classmates to help improve their own knowledge. Finally by discussing the topic they are able to both understand and remember it better.

The dodo(渡渡鸟)was a kind of pigeon which only lived on the little island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean．There were no dangerous animals on Mauritius, so the dodo had stopped being able to fly．It simply walked around the forest for food and lived a safe and easy life．
This all changed in the 16th century when Portuguese(葡萄牙的)sailors first arrived on the island．The birds were so trusting and slow that the sailors called them “dodo”, which means “a stupid person” in Portuguese．Thousands were killed and eaten, and soon the dodo became an important source of food for all passing ships．Very quickly, the number of dodos started to fall．
By 1681, only(200 years after people first set foot on Mauritius, the last dodo had died．The greedy and selfishness of people had destroyed their peaceful lifestyle．The bird which was given the name “stupid”, is now a symbol for the stupidity of human beings．

No wonder English poses(构成)such a challenge to non-native speakers．This most global of languages has more words than any other, over 1 million according to the Global Language Monitor．Out of this number, the average American college student has mastered between 8,000-15,000．
Realizing that words are the building blocks of language, many Chinese students try hard to catch up．They make out long lists of words－often in alphabetical order－and simply memorize their definitions(释义)and Chinese meanings．
The bad news is that definition memorization does them little good when it comes to college entrance tests like the SATs．For these tests, a student needs to understand, not simply parrot words studied．
The good news is that there are better ways to build an academic English vocabulary．
Vocabulary learning system
The first thing to do is to develop an organized, but easy means of collecting and learning new words．We recommend a card system that includes the following information：
Word－Simple Definition in English－Phrase or Sentence－Related Words－Synonyms(同义词)and Antonyms(反义词)－with a Chinese translation on the reverse(背面)of the card．
The advantage of this system is that with a single card, a student can learn not just one word but a group of related words．
Keep your cards on a detachable(可分离的)metal ring, so you can carry them around and add to your collection daily．

Books generally do not give us a very true picture of lands beyond our shores. Some of them are even misleading.
