Blogs allow readers to post comments. There were millions of blogs out there, so I   36   expected anyone to read mine,   37   respond. But almost immediately they did. Twelve messages were   38   after my first entry. I went to the library five times that day—each time there were more.

The next morning I couldn’t wait to get up and hurry to the library.   39   I told my story. It gave structure and a purpose to my day.

For so long I’d been unable to   40   in the real world, afraid of rejection or pity or scorn(轻蔑).   41   here it was safe. This   42   with people on the other side of the screen, many on the other side of the world, was   43   me back to life again.

One particularly cold Tuesday I opened my   44   to see, among emails from bloggers   45   how I was surviving the snow, one saying: “New York Times Journalist Trying to Contact You.” Ian Urbina had discovered my blog   46   when researching an article on people living in their   47   in the U.S. exchanged emails and later he called me up. I hadn’t spoken to   48   for months but, as rain streamed down the glass   49  , the words came. I had been living in the car for almost nine months.

The article   50   on the front page. I didn’t know until I opened my computer. There were emails from people around the world. For almost a year on one had known I   51   existed but now here were hundreds wishing me well. They said they were   52   for me.

Now every time I pressed “Check Mail”, there were more messages. I watched the numbers of the visitors counter on my blog   53   by the hundreds. These were people at their computers all over the world. I felt as of I was viewing a miracle unfold(展开).

Over the next week, in libraries and in the car   54   under lamp posts at night, I wrote my papers. I had notepaper spread   55   the dashboard(仪表盘). And every morning in the quiet of the lane, I wrote for my life.

Honestly, since my son was born, I have thought a lot about how to raise a child. I once heard a story that told about when a baby was born. The story said that when a baby was born, a new master was born. The parents of that baby would become the servants. The question is: Why? Based on my observation, this phenomenon is true. Most parents who don't pay much attention to their kids have difficulties with their kids' attitude.

I'll make a comparison of how two families raise their children. The first one is a family with three children. Both mother and father never say "No" to their children's demands. As a result, all of their children became stubborn and won't listen to their parents’ words, "We can't."

The second family educated their children strictly from one year old to high school. The parents never approved or agreed directly to give their children what they wanted. They always postponed one or two days, even if they could afford it. Due to the way their parents educated them, these children understood that if they wanted something, they had to wait or they had to make an effort first. As a result, all the kids from the second family successfully graduated from university on time.

In my opinion, if we want to be successful parents and raise our children well, we have to start disciplining them when they are toddlers but not wait until they become teenagers.

Why did the writer give two different stories in this passage?

  A. To help prove his opinion about raising a child.

  B. To list different ways that parents may take.

  C. To criticize some parents’ foolish action.

  D. To prove that his way of education is right.

What does the underlined word “postponed” in the third paragraph mean?

  A. Carried out at once.                 B. Gave up.

  C. Put off.                         D. Made a decision.

In the writer’s opinion, which of the following about raising a child is TRUE?

  A. Children should be respected once they were born.

  B. Parents should educate their children as early as possible.

  C. It is right time to educate their children when they are teenagers.

  D. Children should be helped whenever they make mistakes.

What do you think is the best title of this passage?

  A. Make a comparison of how two families raise their children

  B. To be successful parents

  C. How to raise children well

  D. Educate children strictly from one year old to high school

Over a hundred years ago people in London were surprised to see a very unusual boat come sailing up the Thames River. The boat was eighty feet long, flat-bottomed, with big wooden eyes on both sides in the front and was colorfully painted at the back.

People came to know that it was a sailing boat from Fuzhou in distant China. The boat had sailed round the Cape of Good Hope(好望角), up the western coast of Africa, and finally to England. It had covered(航行) fifteen thousand miles — more than half of the distance round the world.

Although it was unexpected, the Chinese were warmly welcomed. The boat carried goods such as silk and tea as well as a number of gifts from the Emperor of China for the Queen of England.

People had always mistakenly thought of the Chinese as a people not used to the sea. However, from centuries of trading and sailing in dangerous seas, the Chinese had learned how to build good boats and sail them well. The coming of this sailing boat to London proved once again that the Chinese could sail to distant countries in the world.

The Chinese sailing boat arrived in London            .

   A. before she sailed to Africa           B. in the nineteenth century

   C. hundreds of years ago               D. in the twentieth century

The boat was considered unusual because           .

  A. it was a small wooden boat           B. it carried Chinese silk and tea

C. it had travelled fifteen thousand miles  D. it looked strange in several ways

According to this article, which of the following is true?

   A. The distance round the earth measures less than thirty thousand miles.

   B. The Chinese Emperor gave silk and tea to the English Queen as gifts.

   C. The Chinese boat came to London by accident.

   D. The Chinese people were not good at sailing in dangerous seas.

The writer wants to prove that a long time ago the Chinese              .

  A. carried silk, tea and other goods to England

   B. could reach many parts of the world by sea

   C. could sail along the Thames River

   D. surprised Londoners with an unusual boat
