A new weapon is on the way in the fight against smoking in Europe.
Soon when smokers buy cigarettes, they might see a shocking photo of
a blackened lung or a cancer patient staring back at them from the packet.
Some boys may think of smoking as cool and sexy. Their friends won’t
agree when they see their packets of cigarettes lying on the table.
The European Union announced on October 22, that it had chosen 42 photos that showed the damage cigarettes could do to the body. It called on member nations to put these pictures on packets to discourage young smokers.
To catch the attention of teenagers, the special packets warn of long-term medical dangers, like cancer. Short-term effects, like bad skin, are also on the list.
“The true fact of smoking is disease, death and horror. That is the message we should send to the young,” said David Byrne, an EU health official. “Hopefully these pictures will shock students out of their love for cigarettes.”
The EU head office hoped the pictures would work better than current written warnings on packs of cigarettes. The warning included “smoking kills” and “smoking can lead to a slow and painful death.”
So far, Ireland and Belgium have shown interest in the photos. Canada has used similar pictures and warnings on cigarette packs since 2000.The country has recently seen a fall in the number of smokers.
According to studies, smoking is the single biggest cause of avoidable death in EU. Every year more than 650,000 smokers die, more than one person a minute.

查看习题详情和答案>>A cheap drug that can stop bleeding in people recently injured in an accident could potentially save the lives of tens of thousands worldwide, a new study says.
Researchers studied the effects of tranexamic acid (凝血酸), or TXA, in more than 10,000 injured people in 40 countries who received the drug within 8 hours of being injured. The study was published in the medical journal Lancet. Doctors found that patients who got TXA had a 15percent lower chance of dying from hemorrhage than those who didn’t get it . They also had a 10 percent lower chance of dying from any other cause, including organ failure and a head injury. The study was paid for by the British government.
The drug is commonly used in wealthy countries during elective surgeries(外科手术) to stop bleeding , but isn’t used for accident victims. TXA is off-patent and made by many companies. It costs about $4.5 per gram, and a typical dose is two grams. It is usually given via an injection(注射) and would be relatively easy to introduce, even in poor countries, experts said.
Previous tests of the drug regarded its use in elective surgeries, such as heart operations, but this was the first study to test the drug on accident victims. Doctors were worried it might increase side effects such as blood clots (凝块)in the heart and lungs, strokes, or heart attacks. There was no evidence of that in the Lancet study, though the authors said it was possible they might have missed some of these incidents.
For people between 5 and 45, accidents are the second leading cause of death worldwide after AIDS, and about 600,000 injured patients bleed to death every year. Experts estimated that if TXA were readily available, between 70,000 and 100,000 lives a year could be saved. Though the drug wasn’t tested on children , experts said it would almost certainly work with them as well.
The underlined word” hemorrhage” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________
A. serious illness B. heart disease C. heavy bleeding D. lack of drug
What can we learn about TXA from the passage?
A. It can only be made in England B. It was only used in operations before
C. It is a patented drug D. It is mainly used in poor countries
Doctors were worried about using TXA because ________
A. a lot of patients died unexpectedly after using it
B. it has no treatment effect on patients
C. it can cause blood clots or stroke
D. they hadn’t used it on accident victims before
What do we know from the last paragraph?
A. It is a pity that TXA wasn’t widely used on injured patients before
B. Tests have proved that TXA can be used on children
C. People between 5 and 45 should be injected with TXA every year
D. Accidents are the first leading cause of death worldwide.
查看习题详情和答案>>A recent announcement by scientists that they have successfully cloned the first human embryo has caused much debate and has shocked many people around the world. On the one hand, some scientists point out that if you clone an embryo, you can produce valuable tissues(组织)and organs that could be used to save human lives. On the other hand, many people, including some scientists, disagree and fear that if mankind interferes with(干涉)nature in this way, they may be on their way to producing a real-life Frankenstein’s monster.
Cloning is producing an exact copy of a plant or an animal using its cells. The first mammal to be cloned successfully from an adult cell was Dolly the sheep. She was born in 1996 and died in early 2003,at a much younger age than normal. When she was born, many people were angry because they thought cloning would create more disease in the animal world. However,in general the scientists were praised for their wonderful scientific breakthrough.
The Scottish scientist who created Dolly,Ian Wilmut,is shocked that some scientists are now considering cloning human beings. Although he researches cloning, his intention has never been to create copies of humans. Instead,he thinks research efforts should concentrate on creating new tissues and organs that could eventually be used to cure diseases like cancer. However, some people consider that cloning human embryos with the intention of destroying them shows no respect for human life.
While cloning human embryos is illegal in many countries, some scientists are already pushing ahead with research so as to deliver a cloned human baby. Severino Antinori,an Italian doctor,is one of the leaders in this kind of research. He has declared that he wants to be the first to clone a human being.
In China, scientists have focused their efforts on cloning animals,as well as stern cells to be used in medical research. China has succeeded in producing clones of cows and goats, and continues to research ways in which cloning can benefit mankind.
51. Which of the following statements about cloning is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Cloning technology can only be applied to animals.
B. A cloned animal can live longer than a normal one.
C. People all over the world are happy about the birth of Dolly.
D. Cloning can produce valuable tissues and organs to cure human diseases.
52. The reasons why people are anti-cloning include the following EXCEPT that_______.
A. cloning may produce a real-life Frankenstein’s monster
B. cloning might create more disease in the animal world
C. cloning can’t help those who want to clone their dead children
D. cloning human embryos shows no respect for human life
53. Who is in favor of cloning human beings?
A. Ian Wilmut. B. Severino Antinori.
C. The author. D. The Chinese scientists.
54. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. If we interfere with nature, we will change the world to be what we want.
B. It is impossible to clone babies for women who cannot have ones.
C. Cloning human beings is illegal in many countries,so no scientists want to do so.
D. Whether cloning human embryos is legal or not remains a matter of debate.
查看习题详情和答案>>A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.
“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components(元件), ”said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.
They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.
While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. “Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day-to-day basis.”
72. The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was that ________.

A. consists of a flight device and a control system
B. can just fly in limited areas at the present time
C. can collect information from many sources
D. has been put into wide application
74. Which of the following can be learned from the passage?
A. The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.
B. Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.
C. There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.
D. Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments.
75. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
