Last month, Junior 1 students from Beijing Chaoyang Foreign Language School took a special test. They took it by traveling.

The students went to Nanjing and Yangzhou for five days. Their teachers gave each student a list of questions to answer during the trip. The questions are also the students' mid-term test for history and geography. There were questions like: How long is the Beijing-Shanghai Railway? What were the six dynasties (朝代) that used Nanjing as their capital?

"I never had so much fun with an exam," said Gao Chenxiang,13. "We learned a lot by working this way."

"If 1 was learning only from a textbook, I wouldn′t have known how bad the Japanese invaders (侵略者) were," said Gao.

Students did not get to sleep on the train to Nanjing. Usually the kids would sleep on a train journey so long, but in this case they were all given seats.

"The seats are very uncomfortable," said DengLin,12. "I know most migrant workers (民工)travel this way. That must be so hard."

阅读下列短文,根据短文内容填写表格 (每空限填一词)。

The following are taken from the book of Cambridge Real English Skills. They are very helpful in learning English.

Learning tip 1: When you read, it is not necessary to understand every word in the text. You only need to understand the parts of the text which contain (包含) the information you are looking for.

Learning tip 2: Scanning is when we read a text quickly to find a particular piece of information. We do not read every word. We stop reading when we find the information we want.

Learning tip 3: Make yourself ready for reading a text by thinking about the topic in your own language. This will help you to predict (预测) the content of the English text and working out the meaning of any unknown words.

Learning tip 4: Skimming is when we read a text quickly to find out what it is about or to get a general idea. We do not read every word. We get the main idea and we don’t pay attention to details.

Learning tip 5: When we read a text, we want to understand the writer’s message. To do this, we read silently. In real life, we sometimes read aloud—for example, we might read out something from a newspaper to a friend. Reading aloud does not help you to understand the message, but it helps you to practise the language.

Learning tip 6: As you read, try to work out the meaning of unknown words. Find other words in the text which might help you with the meaning of the word you do not know. Perhaps some other words in the text have the same meaning—or the opposite meaning. Only use a dictionary to check your guesses.

Learning tip 7: Your knowledge of grammar will not help you with the meaning of unknown words. But it will help you to decide whether words are nouns, verbs, etc. This will help you to link words in sentences and to read words in groups.

Learning tip 8: You can use either a dictionary with English and your language or a dictionary which has definitions in English. The main advantage of using a dictionary which has definitions in English is that you are working in English all the time. These dictionaries also explain the different meanings that one word can have, and they give lots of examples of how words are used.

Did you notice the number on the book in a library? That number is part of the system used by libraries to organize their collections of books. And it’s used in many countries. The number on each book tells you exactly what kind of book it is. This system is also useful for knowing where to go in the library to find a book.
In this system, there are ten large groups of books. Each of these groups has its own number, such as 100, 200, etc. So, for example, any books about language will have a number 400. On the other hand, any books about history will have a number 900. So, a number in the hundreds place tells you what general group a book is in. If you find a book that has a number in the 500s, you know it is a book about science.
However, science is a big group, so the tens place is used to make a more detailed set of science books. For example, math books are included in the group of science books. Math books all have numbers between 510 and 519. Books about the history of Africa have numbers between 960 and 969.
The system uses the ones place to give a more exact limit for the subject of a book. A book on the history of South Africa will have the number 968.
As you can see, it is a simple system to use as long as you understand what the numbers mean. With this system, the library can keep its books well organized, and people can easily find the book that they want.
