摘要: What do you think of Guangzhou?

When your pen is broken, you think that’s the end of its life. You throw it away. It then joins tons of other garbage that is becoming a big problem in cities.
Each day, about 10,000 tons of waste is produced in Guangzhou, and 17,000 tons of household waste is produced in Beijing. In other countries, the case is similar.“If you’re like most of us, most Americans, you’re making seven pounds (3.17kg) of trash a day,” US writer Edward Humes told CNN. So, an American makes 102 tons of trash in a lifetime.
If you simply throw away that broken pen, it goes to a landfill(垃圾填埋场) and is buried together with many other trash. To prevent polluting the groundwater, workers cover the trash with soil and keep it dry. And your pen will stay there for a long, long time, without having further use.
But it could have a better destination: the recycling bin.Have you ever noticed the different colors of trash bins in the street? Many cities in China have been running a waste-sorting (垃圾分类) campaign. They divide trash into “recyclable waste” and “unrecyclable waste”.
Recycling waste can save energy, reduce greenhouse gas, and keep space free for the unrecyclable trash.Take your pen as an example. At the recycling factory, its metal parts could be taken out and reused to make other things. But recycling is not enough, experts say. Making less waste in the first place is the way forward.
“The best thing to do is just keep using your stuff for as long as you can,” US writer Adam Minter told Time Out magazine.

If you watch the sky about an hour after the sun goes down, you may see some "moving stars". But they
aren't real stars. They're satellites, a machine that has been sent into space and goes around the Earth, moon,
etc. And the biggest of all is the International Space Station (ISS).
The ISS is the biggest satellite because scientists want to live on it. They think that the best way to learn
more about space is to live there. The space shuttle Discovery has taken off from the Kennedy Space Center
in Cape Canaveral, Florida several times and carried a few groups of astronauts to the International Space
Station.
When the space station is finished, it will be like a city in space. People will stay and study there with many
of the things they have at home. Laboratories, living rooms and power stations are being built. The ISS is the
most expensive space program ever. Millions and millions of dollars are being spent on it every year.
Scientists hope that the ISS will be a stepping stone for future space exploration. "The ISS will help us
better understand the human body, explore (know more about) space and study the earth. It can help us make
life on the earth better," said Kathryn Clark, an ISS scientist.
Sixteen countries are in the program: The US, Russia, Canada, Japan, Brazil and 11 European countries.
China is not an ISS country, but it has helped with some of the experiments. In 2003, China sent some rice
up to the ISS to find out what space would do to it.
Twenty Chinese students talked directly to an astronaut (spaceman) in the International Space Station (ISS)
on radio in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province on Sunday, 2007. The 20 students, aged 10 to 19
from Shanghai, Guangzhou and Nanjing, began talking to Clayton C. Anderson, a 48-year-old American
astronaut at 18:50 p.m. at Nanjing No. 3 Middle School when the ISS was passing over Nanjing.
After it's finished, more than 90 percnt of the world's population will be able to see the space station. So
keep looking up, and maybe you'll see it get bigger and brighter.

A. we can probably see the ISS when the sun goes down
B. some students from Nanjing have been to the ISS

For years, it was the same old “one, two, three, four” during group exercises for students at Zhenguang High School in Guangzhou.

Students used to think their exercises were boring. But now, the school’s 700 juniors have a fun, new way to do them.

To get students more interested in exercise, the school asked students to create a set of group exercises for themselves.

Can you guess what kinds of moves the students chose for their new group exercises? Some are like aerobics (健美操), and others are like the Para Para dance.

“The old moves aren’t as relaxing as the new one. The new moves are livelier than the old ones. They are better for juniors.” said li Yanbin, a teacher at Zhenguang.

During breaks or after class, students sometimes talk with their P.E. teachers about their exercise moves. If the students have good ideas, teachers might even make changes to the moves. If the students think one move is too difficult, teachers might practice the move with them together.

Students don’t just get to choose their moves now, they also decide what music to use during exercises. In the past, the music they used was always the same kind. Now, each exercise uses a different song. Students can take their favorite music to school and ask their teachers to use it for exercise. “The music is so strong, you just can’t help but dance to it.” said Xiao Xiao, a 13-year old girl in Junior 1.

                                                               Customs on Eating
Food in China and western countries is different. China has about 5,000 years' history. They may spend
half of their time on food. Chinese people choose food very carefully. They only use fresh materials (新鲜的材料) to make food. For example, they only eat fresh fish. Chinese have a lot of ideas for cooking. They can
cook a chicken in over ten ways. That's why Chinese food is so popular around the world. Western countries,
like England or America, don't have fresh food because they buy their food from supermarkets which only sell
stored materials (储存的材料). Western people also prefer fast food like hamburgers and chips. They are
unhealthy for man's body. Western people do not have many skills for cooking, mostly they only boil, steam
(蒸) and bake the food. By the way, western people are very good at making desserts and chocolate. They
can make very good cakes and chocolate. These food are very sweet and they can make you become fat
quickly.
In China, the person who invites other people for meal would pay for the meal, but it's not the same way
in western countries. In western countries, people will think you only invite them but don't need to pay for
them. They can afford it. They won't be happy if you pay for them. In western countries like America or
England, people will always give tips (小费) to the waiter after they finish the meal in a restaurant. If you don't,
the waiter will not be happy. In China this only happens in some top restaurants and hotels in large cities like
Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Another difference in eating is that: Chinese people use chopsticks and western people use knives and
forks.
Chinese people only have three meals during a day. But western people may have more. They usually have
afternoon tea when they would have fruit, cakes or biscuits with cheese (奶酪饼干).
1. Do Chinese people use fresh materials or stored materials to make food?
    _________________________________________________________________________
2. Why is Chinese food so popular in the world?
    _________________________________________________________________________
3. What kinds of foods are western people good at making?
    _________________________________________________________________________
4. Will western people be happy if you pay for them?
    _________________________________________________________________________
5. How many meals do Chinese people have during a day?
