To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at
Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, school is very different.
Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want. There are
no teachers, only "staff members". The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn,
because children want to learn anyway."You do not need to say to a three-year-old, 'Go explore your
environment.' You can't stop them!"says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school."But if you make children
do what you want all day… they will lose all taste of learning." At Sudbury Valley School, you will find
children talking, reading, painting, cooking, working on computers, studying French, playing the piano,
climbing trees, or just running around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!
The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every
week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote (投票) each-even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school money, and even which staff they want and do not
want anymore.
When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200
students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have
successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.

New rules and Behavior Standards for middle school students came out in March. A middle school is going to start new rules who the top students are. The best students will have high marks, they will also be ones who don’t color their hair, smoke or drink. The following are more of the new rules.
Tell the truth. Have you ever copied work in an exam? Don’t do it again! That’s not something students should do. If you are playing computer games in your room, don’t tell your parents you are doing homework.
Do more activities at school. Good students love animals and others. April is Bird Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate it? You should join! That way you can learn more about animals and 46 them. When more people work together, it brings us more .
Learn to co-operate. When your basketball team is , only working together can make your team . Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others, not only yourself.
Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you’ll Earth Ⅱ someday. Don’t look down upon new ideas. All the ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.
Pay attention to your safety. You should not walk outside, especially at night. where the public phones are. If ________ happens, you can find them quickly. If you take a bus to a place far away, please don’t sleep. This stops a stranger from money from you.
Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. not everything on the Internet is fit for kids. You may enter healthy websites for your homework or just for fun.

As a volunteer(自愿者) teacher, I traveled a long way to a small village school in Longzhou, Guangxi. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school and the childrenn there. However, my heart sank when I arrived there. It wasn't what I expected. It didn't look like a school at all! The school had only three rooms, one for Grades 1, 2 and 3, and the other for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me.
The children welcomed me warmly on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories about myself and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their level(水平). To my surprise, though the test was very easy, over half of the students failed it, yet they all wanted to learn new things. I knew they needed me.
I was busy preparing lessons and reading test papers every night. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hard-working children, and I could see that they were making progress(进步) with my help. I have also learned a lot from them. I understand their level is becoming higher and higher, and we are good friends now.
I worked in Longzhou for a year. I'm very happy, and the experience(经历) is very useful to me. I love the small village and the children. In fact, I would like to continue working here.
