Despite the great progress in medical science, human beings are constantly attacked by cancer, which means death. A woman named Bonnie suffered a1of discomforts caused by the treatment of cancer. She didn’t regard cancer as a2disease, but a laughing matter. She treated it in a humorous way. To put it in3way, she is teaching people that even though cancer isn't4, we can treat it in a humorous way.
Her second child was going to be born three months away5she was diagnosed with cancer. Suddenly, a6mother turned into a helpless woman afraid for her own7. It was after she had had her baby8that she had an operation.9came chemo(化疗)and her life seemed to be made up of fears and10. But the11moment in her life came after she lost all her hair and a free wig(假发) arrived. She12it on as her older son Kyler watched.
“That was when I decided how to13it: crying over this bad wig or laughing about it.14way would make15remember it.” Bonnie said. She spent a lot of time looking for anything funny from cancer patients. She got a lot out of collecting16stories. She started laughing a lot, finding it the perfect medicine. Using herself as a bald (光头) model, Bonnie17to design her own greeting cards and calendars, making fun of the sufferings of chemo.
"To have joy, we badly18to laugh," she said.
Clearly, you can increase your confidence to19over any disease and trouble20laughing.

About one year ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to me. I never heard any noise from the children, but I often heard the parents1 shouting at the kids, not in a nice tone, but in a (n)2 one.
We often3 in the hallway. I always greeted them,4 the only answer I ever got was a “hello” from the eight-year-old girl. I usually5 to see my doctor and one day when I returned they were just6 their apartment and the little girl was7 the outside door open for the others. I8 in the car doing9 things because I wasn’t eager to be snubbed (冷落) again. Finally I got out of my car and walked towards the door. The parents were telling her to10 to get into the car, but the little girl was still holding the door,11 me! I hurried although I was still in pain from my injury.
I forgot to tell her how12 I was for her kindness. I wrote a note saying how much her act of kindness had13 an old man’s heart.
The next day there was a (n)14 on my door and it was the little girl and her father. She was quite15 of her behavior and thanked me. Then I noticed her mother was there, too. Her parents16 me, too.
Now when we meet in the hall way we always greet each other, in a friendly17 .
Last night there was a heavy snow. I looked out at my car and18 how I was going to keep my doctor’s19 because I could only walk for a short time. This morning when I opened the front door, all the snow was removed.
Isn’t it20 that the small kind act of an 8-year-old girl can change so many things for the better? It is said that good tings come from small acts.

Michelle is blind, but she makes such good use of her other senses that guests rarely realize that she is blind.
When my daughter Kayla came back from her home, she was very1about her day. She told me that she had baked cookies, played games and done art projects. But she was especially excited about her finger-painting project. “I learned how to2colors today! Blue and red make purple, and yellow and blue make green! Michelle3with us too. She said she liked how the paint feels through her fingers,” said Kayla.
Something about my child’s excitement caught my4. this made me sit down and take a look at my child and at myself.
Then Kayla said, “Michelle told me my picture showed joy,5and a sense of accomplishment. She6saw what I was doing!” Kayla said she had never felt how good finger-painting felt until Michelle showed her how to paint without looking at her paper.
This is when I realized Kayla didn’t know that Michelle was blind. It had just never7 in conversation. When I told her, she was quiet for a moment. At first, she didn’t 8me. “ But mommy, Michelle understood exactly what was in my picture!” Kayla insisted. I knew my child was9because Michelle had listened to Kayla when she10her artwork. Michelle had listened to Kayla’s pride in her work, and her wonder at her discovery of the way colors blend.

Like most English children, I learned foreign languages at 1. When I made my first visit2 the Unites States, I was 3I could have a nice easy holiday without any4 problem. But how5 I was!
At the American airport, I was looking for a public telephone to6 my friend Jenny I had 7. A worker asked if he could8 me. “Yes,” I said. “I want to give my friend a ring.” “Well, that’s nice. Are you getting married?” he asked. “No,” I answered. “I just want to tell her9 the phone I have arrived.” “Oh,” he said, “there is a10 downstairs on the first floor.” “But we’re on the first floor now,” I said. “Well, I don’t know what you are11 about. Maybe you aren’t feeling too well after your12,” he said. “You just go and wash up, and you will feel a lot better.” And he went 13,14 me wondering where on earth I was: at home we wash up after a15 to get the cups and plates clean. How can I wash up at an airport?
At last we did16. She17 the misunderstanding(误会): American say “to give someone a18 ”, but we English say “ to give someone a ring”. When we say “to wash your hands”, they say “to wash19”. And Englishmen start numbering from the floor, so the20 floor is the second for Americans.

I recently overheard something that surprised me. I heard that people who win the lottery (彩票) are1for about 3 weeks. And then they go back to their2state of being before they won the money.I3that they would have been happy for a much longer time.
The reason for this is that4we try to change how we feel by using something outside of ourselves, like winning the lottery,or getting a new car or house,it never5.The resulting feelings of happiness are often fleeting (飞逝的).We cannot6them for very long.In some way,it may be a good thing. It reminds us that happiness really does come from within and is7to us at any moment.True happiness has8to do with what is happening outside;it is an inside job.Happiness is a9.
We can make the decision to be happy for one day, when we10in the morning, every morning. We can find something that brings us great11,like sitting outside in the garden under an old tree and12the birds sing,or watching the dog or cat play, and just13the moment. It is our14state and we need only allow it in.At any moment,we can15,take a deep breath, and remember who we really are,and why we came here, and that truly is to16joy and the aliveness of being.
“Happiness is like a butterfly which, when run after,is always17our reach, but,if you will sit down18,may fall upon you,” said Nathaniel Hawthorne,an American novelist. So,today,no matter what is going on in your own19,stop and take a few moments to breathe deeply and just20to be happy, whatever that means to you.

He kept complaining about his bad3and kept wondering why those who had so much money were never4and were always desiring more.
“As for me, if I had only enough to eat and to wear, I would not want anything more."
Just at that moment Goddess Fortune5the beggar among the crowd and approached him, greeting, “Hi, young man, I have wished to6you for a long time. If you open your wallet, I will pour my gold into it. But keep in mind that I will do that only on this7: All that falls into the wallet will be pure gold belonging to you; but every piece falling upon the ground8become dust, worth nothing. Are you clear?”
“I see. Now I’m ready. ” said the beggar with confidence.
“Then you should9! It’s obvious that your wallet is a/an10one, so don’t load it too heavily,” said the Goddess Fortune.
The excited beggar could hardly11to have gold. He quickly opened his wallet, and a12of yellow coins was poured into it. The wallet became heavier and heavier.
“Is that enough? Isn’t it cracking? Will your wallet strong enough for more?” warned the Goddess.
“Never13.It’s still strong enough now” replied the beggar firmly.
The wallet was filled with so many coins that the beggar’s handsbegan to14. “Ah, if only the golden stream would15forever! Just a little more,” said the beggar, “16just a handful or two.”
“There! It’s full. The wallet will17.” warned the Goddess again, but the beggar insisted, “ I know it will18a little more, just a little more.”
One more piece was added and the wallet split. The19fell upon the ground and became dust. The greedy beggar had now20but his broken wallet.
