December 2
Sharon called about four times today. At least it shows she’s trying to explain something to me. I feel a little better.
December 3
This morning Sharon said she had only told one person and didn’t know why everyone seemed to know. Yes, I am an adopted (收养的) daughter. But she had promised to keep it a secret for ever!
December 5
I wish I had a friend I could really trust all of the time. I thought I found that friend, but I haven’t and it’s making me miserable (痛苦的)! It’s wrong to tell her all about it. She gains my trust, and then loses it.
December 7
I have a nice room, beautiful house and everything I’ve ever wanted. My adoptive parents will give me all the things I’ve ever dreamed of. Yet all the money in the world can’t buy what I want now. I want for Sharon to be my best friend again.
December 10
Sharon just called. She said she thought it might help if we spent more time together. She worried that I would switch schools (转学). She is the best friend I’ve ever had. When I’m with Sharon, I can be myself. I need Sharon’s friendship. I need it more than I’ve ever known.
December 16
I just had the most fantastic two days of my life! This was the best time I’ve had for a long, long while. Yesterday, we walked five times around the park and today we walked along the river for twenty minutes. We talked so much. Sharon, Sharon, no brick wall between us now.

In America, drivers’ education is part of the regular high school curriculum(课程). Every student in his or her second year of high school is required to take a class in driver’s education. However, unlike other courses, it is not given during the regular school year. Instead it is a summer course.
The course is divided up into two parts: class time for learning laws and regulations, and driving time to practise driving. Class time is not unlike any other class. The students study the basic traffic laws from a text to pass the written driving test that is given to anyone who wants to get a driver’s license.
Driving time is a chance for the students to get behind the wheel (steering wheel) and practise starting steering, backing up, parking, switching lanes, turning corners, and all the other maneuvers (操作) required to drive a car. Each student is required to drive a total of six hours. The students are divided up into groups of four. The students and the instructor go out driving for two hour blocks of time. Thus, each student gets half an hour driving time per outing. The instructor and “driver” sit in the front seats and the other three students sit in the back.
After the student has passed the driver’s education course and reached the appropriate age to drive(this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old),they can go to a designated(指定的) state office to take their driver’s test, which is made up of an eye examination, a written test, and a road test. In only two decades Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing US minority. As their children began moving up through the nation’s schools,it became clear that a new kind of culture was coming out.Their achievements are made in the nation’s best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their education abroad arrived in the U.S. with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college.Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively(客观).And the money spent on education is more immediately returned in something like engineering than with an arts degree.
Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children should take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework. Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do,and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture, such as family value, the importance of education and so on that lead to their success.
Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they could cause the native Americans’unhappiness. Many can remember when Chinese,Japanese and Filipino immigrants(移民)were unequally treated because of social separation.Indeed,it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.

More and more scientific experiments prove that physical exercise can reduce the dangers of some illnesses in middle-aged persons.Exercise strengthens the heart muscle, reduces blood pressure and help to prevent muscles from changing into fat.Physical exercise is just as important for children.
Exercise and food affect growing speed in young lab animals.Baby mice start running as soon as they are big enough to use an exercise wheel in their cage. If  they get extra food and run a lot, they will grow as much as 1.5 times bigger than normal.
The same differences in growing speed might be found between active and inactive children.Physical exercise helps active children grow faster than inactive children. One experiment shows that the brains of the mice that had enough exercise weighed about 3%more than those of the mice that did not exercise The mice that exercised are much quicker to learn doing new exercise than the mice that did not exercise.
The results of the experiments suppose the theory that exercise can help babies learn to talk and walk sooner than expected.
The good effects of physical exercise are not limited to children and middle-aged people.Exercise continues to be an important part of our lives after we grow old.For example, people over 50 years old begin to lose calcium(钙) from their bones, which get weaker and can break easily.Physical exercise, however, helps to strengthen the bones and to prevent them from losing calcium.Of course, old people can take medicines to prevent themselves from suffering from losing calcium. But the medicines they take increase the chance of developing some kind of cancer(癌).So physical exercise is a much safer treatment(治疗).

Not only did the students ask for changes in the list of required subjects, but they also demanded the right to choose their courses according to their own taste and future needs. No more fixed programs,no guidance from educators and professors. All they wanted was to get their degree as fast as possible and go to work.
Although the educators didn’t all agree;a majority recognized that time had indeed changed and that education should perhaps adapt itself to the realities of modern society.Colleges and universities revised their programs to include a large number of specialized courses in business, nursing, engineering, and other professional fields. In the 1960s they also added courses requested by the students because they considered them“relevant(相关的)”(Women Studies,Revolution,or Black History)or useful(glass blowing, infant care, slow running,or family life). The students were granted the right to choose their courses as they wished. Many traditional subjects had to be dropped, including history and foreign languages;the liberal education courses that were still useful were often neglected(忽视)by the students, who didn’t feel like working hard to learn something that was not required for graduation.
Whether the revised programs have helped college graduates to find employment quickly is not clear. But after fifteen or twenty years of experimentation, they have raised a lot of criticism. Some of it comes from the graduates themselves, who discover that their practical knowledge is neither deep nor flexible(灵活的).As soon as they progress to higher positions, they find that they need management training and more study in their own field.Besides, they feel disabled by their lack of general knowledge, for example,by their ignorance of the language and culture of the foreigners with whom they are doing business. Most of all they suffer from their inability to use English, their own language, easily and properly.

I was glad when somebody told me, "You may go and collect Negro folklore(民间传说)." In a way, it would not be a new experience for me. When I pitched head first into the world of Negroism, it was fitting me like a tight chemise (衬衣).I couldn't see it for wearing it.It was only when I was out of college, away from my native surroundings that I could stand off and look at my garment. Then I had to have the spy-glass of anthropology to look through.
I was asked where I wanted to work and I said, "Florida. It's a place that draws people─Negroes from every Southern state and some from the North and West." So I knew that it was possible for me to get across the section of the Negro South in one state. And then I realized that I felt new myself, so it looked sensible for me to choose familiar ground.
I started in Eatonville, Florida, because I knew that the town was full of material and that I could get it without causing any hurt or harm. As early as I could remember, it was the habit of the men particularly to gather on the store porch in the
evenings and exchange stories.Even the women would stop and break a breath with them at times. As a child when I was sent down to the store, I' d drag out my leaving to hear more.
Folklore is not as easy to collect as it sounds. The ideal source is where there are the fewest outside influences, but these people are.reluctant at times to reveal that which the soul lives by.I knew that even I would have some hindrance(障碍)among strangers. But here in Eatonville I knew everybody was going to help me.

In 1957 a doctor in Singapore noticed that hospitals were treating an unusual number of influenzalike cases. Influenza is sometimes called “flu”or a “bad cold”. He took samples from the throats of patients in his hospital and was able to find the virus(病毒)of this influenza.
There are three main types of influenza virus. The most important of these are types A and B, each of them having several sub-groups(亚群). At the hospital the doctor recognized that the outbreak was because of a virus group A, but he did not know the sub-group. He reported the outbreak to the World Health Organization in Geneva. W. H. O. published the important news together with reports of the same kind of outbreak in Hong Kong, where about 15%~20% of the population had become ill.
As soon as the London doctors received the package of throat samples, they began to test them. They found that they could reproduce themselves at a very high speed. Continuing their careful tests, the doctor checked the effect of medicine used against all the known sub-groups of type A virus. On this virus, none of them was of any use.
Having separated the virus, the two doctors now made tests on some selected seleceted animals. In a short time the usual signs of the disease appeared. These experiments showed that the new virus spread easily, but that it was not a killer. Scientists, like the general public, called it simply “Asian flu”.

People living on parts of the south coast of England face a serious problem. In 1933, the owners of a large hotel and of several houses discovered, to their surprise that their gardens had disappeared overnight. The sea had eaten into the soft limestone cliff (悬崖) on which they had been built. While ex?perts were studying the problem, the hotel and several houses disappeared altogether, sliding down the cliff and into the sea.
Erosion (侵蚀) of the white cliffs along the south coast of England has always been a problem but it has become more serious in recent years. Dozens of homes have had to be aban?doned as the sea has crept farther and farther inland. Experts have studied the areas most affected and have drawn up a map for local people, forecasting the year in which their homes will be eaten up by the hungry sea.
Angry owners have called on the Government to erect sea defenses to protect their homes. Government surveyors have pointed out that in most cases, this is impossible. New sea walls would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would merely make the waves and currents further along the coast, shifting the problem from one area to another. The danger is likely to continue, they say, until the waves reach an inland ar?ea of hard rock, which will not be eaten as limestone is. Mean?while, if you want to buy a cheap house with an uncertain fu?ture, apply to a house agent in one of the threatened areas on the south coast of England. You can get a house for a knock?down price but it may turn out to be a knockdown home.
